Report: Apple iMac G5 in high demand, far exceeding available supply

“Demand for Apple Computer’s new all-in-one iMac G5 has risen sharply over the last 3 weeks, according to information gathered from internal company data. The surge in demand is currently far exceeding available supply of the computers, and shows few signs of slowing, leading insiders to believe the iMac is poised to become a hot seller this holiday season,” AppleInsider reports.

“The company’s iBook consumer laptops are also in strong demand after being refreshed last month. However, the iBook remains a G4-based computer and will likely see a supply and demand balance before G5-based iMac, due to constraints associated with the G5 microprocessor,” AppleInsider reports.

  1. I know it can’t be easy to judge what the demand will be, but why is Apple so frequently off when trying to supply their computers? It would seem that keeping up with demand may actually start to swing marketshare more their way (not trying to start an argument about marketshare, though).

Is it IBM that’s causing the backlog?

  2. what apple needs to do is have a huge warehouse filled with millions of these things before they show them off…

but I guess if they did that with the cube, they’d still have a full warehouse.

  3. can’t afford one either. but i guess i can make money by buying and selling AAPL for a profit. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”grin” style=”border:0;” />

it’s gonna go through the roof, baby.

  4. iggyB.

Yes it is IBM that is causing the shortages. This has been well-known for months since Apple reported it and numerous articles have been written.
Apple doesn’t keep large inventories because it costs money to do so and is a dangerous way to run a business. They generally manage product levels well, particularly when their suppliers actually provide the chips needed for computers and mini drives needed for the iPods on a timely basis (as they promised).

  5. MESSAGE TO APPLE –

MAKE ALOAD MORE OF THESE QUICK OTHERWISE ALOT OF WINDOWS IPOD USERS ARE GONNA BE PISSED OFF IF THEY DON’T GET THEIR NEW G5 IMAC FOR CRIMBO!

This is an ideal opportunity to sell, sell, sell!!

  6. In the flesh the iMac G5 is passable, better looking than all IBM-PC-compatibles I’ve seen, but it truly isn’t up there with the style of the iMac G4. It looks too chunky, though some people might like that and the design lends itself to other mounting options.

The iMac G4 had a visually balance design, the iMac G5 looks chunky and topheavy. Speaking of heavy, it is quite a load, understandably though not as heavy as an iMac G3 or eMac. One has to take care lugging it around, no handles and I think the standard mount while sturdy is sensitive to impacts from the side.

A good whack will knock it over … my tests were only partial on a running demo iMac G5 on a very small (unstable desk). I recommend putting it on a decently sturdy (heavy) desk or coffee table so that any impacts will not cause it to tip over (e.g. co-workers, kids running around the room). However, it has to be a fairly extreme impact (from the side) otherwise it is very stable.

I hope it sells well (it seems to) as I suppose the conservative styling will fit well in style conscious offices. I think I may be better suited to a PowerMac G5 with cinema display … or a faster PowerBook (preferably black), G5, G4 dual core or whatever. The Ti and Al Powerbooks while functional didn’t have the style of the last Powerbook G3 (Pismo) (mine is 4 years old and still powering on … best Mac I’ve ever owned!).

  7. If ONLY ONLY ONLY ONLY Apple could keep up with demand.

It’s been over a month, and my 2.5 G5 is STILL on back order.

No wonder the market share is small.. its not because people don’t use Mac’s, it’s because people can’t GET Macs.

Think about it: What Mid-sized office would switch to a platform that is such short supply?

    Just Make More… and FASTER!

  8. “If they had been stuck full of a warehouse of cubes, they might have sold them at a reasonable price and had a top seller.”

Uh…they did. At the end. Before they discontinued it. And, yes, they sold pretty well once they were dropped to $1299.

Bush IS the antichrist. He is the one that has fooled everyone into believing that he is of God and has everyone following him… that is until, as the Bible says, the truth is revealed, at which time the Lord will return.

I’m happy. We will ALL be with God soon.

  10. The iMac G5 is better than a PowerBook 17″ and cheaper. It is a luggable computer, unlike its predecessors, because it is lighter. It takes less desktop space than a laptop, which for heavy use should be used in conjunction with both an external keyboard and an external monitor.

Thg G5 iMac supports extended desktop even though Apple says not. People who buy it should definitely get Bluetooth and the wireless keyboard and mouse. Is it worth the weight? (joke) Yes, both the wait and the weight. Consider it your new G5 lugtop and forget about waiting for the G5 laptop.

  11. Got the one in Canuckland a few days ago and the Oz one arrives today — both bluetooth 20-inchers. Supply depends on location and build-to-order options — bigger drives and bluetooth involve some delay. Manila is awash in iMacs. The White House is finally upgrading their LC III in order to get LimeWire — used to find those deeply filed (buried) documents. Word is Windows Portable Media devices are gonna be dumped for $99 a piece this Christmas. Life’s a peach.

  12. Apple stock control is absolutely piss poor. How can you increase market share without flooding the market with stock. I walk into PC world, they have a full range of HP computers etc, compared to the apple section, where tumble weed can be seen over the empty spaces where stock should be. It embarrassing, 3.4 GHz PC’s up against old apple stock running at 1GHz?
