Apple Computer last Monday sent out an invitation to press outlets to attend a special event scheduled for today.
The invitation stated:
Steve Jobs, Bono and The Edge invite you to a special event.
Bono and The Edge are members of the band U2. Both Bono and The Edge, along with their song “Vertigo,” are featured in an Apple commercial currently airing nationally in the US.
Apple’s music event Tuesday could produce an iPod preprogrammed with the entire U2 catalog, Alan Promisel, research analyst with IDC, told several media outlets yesterday.
The event is scheduled for today at 10AM PT / 1PM ET at San Jose’s California Theater. MacDailyNews will bring you news of the event’s announcements later today.

Perhaps Apple will introduce a Flash-based iPod and the aacPlus file format for iTMS? (CD quality at half the file size of current AAC)
or we will get iTMS in Canada and the rest of the world – hope hope hope!
My best guess about today is that there will certainly be announcements regarding several European countries being added to the iTunes Music Store, as well as a few others (Canada and Australia, possibly). Observing the way Apple tends to introduce new products, I would be really surprised if they announced their rumored Flash-based iPod or the Photo iPod (my guess is they will be announced at MacWorld in January). In my opinion, the biggest blip on the radar is the U2 thing. If they do it right, don’t be surprised when Madonna, Eminem and the rest of the big artists do the same thing. Just my two cents.
Canada won’t get iTMS untill the Pepsi iPod giveaway is over (a couple of weeks)
let’s hope that this event will bring some interesting news about iPod.

I don’t get all of the U2 bashing going on at MDN. I can name any number of big musical acts that have real clout in the biz that I don’t care for personally, but would be glad to have any of them on the bandwagon, adding weight to what Apple is trying to do.
i.e. The Rolling Stones, Madonna, Usher and Ashlee Simpson

A non-event for me… a black (?) U2 iPod? -Whopdeedoo. Can anyone think of a bigger multi-platinum “band” that are so weak on their instruments? – Drummer – high school back beats.

Could it be that Apple and U2 will announce a new iPod/accessory along with XM radio? Today XM is supposed to announce a new portable device (walkman). Maybe it is an accessory for the iPod? XM and Apple’s announcement are both at 1pm. Imagine running XM radio through you iPod! Could be interesting…
After producing computers for “The Rest of Us” maybe they will introduce an iPod for “You 2”

Yeah Dino and if they shift to aacPlus – it’ll mean every ipod doubles its capacity. Maybe the telecoms companies (Ericsson, Nokia, Siemens etc) will going to be involved too.
I can’t believe the notion that the iPod will come with any U2 songs pre-installed continues to be mentioned. The iPod platform does not allow for this possibility without major reworking – as soon as you hooked it up to your computer iTunes would want to wipe the iPod clean and replace the contents with your iTunes library. You can be sure Apple isn’t going to promote the use of 3rd party tools to copy files off the iPod onto your Mac, so this is just completely bogus. At best it might come with a voucher good for the new U2 album on iTMS, but you’d have to “purchase” and download it as normal.

I bet all we get today is the U2 edition iPod (whatever that ends up being exactly) and some additional countries added to the iTMS.

It’s only going to be the remaining EU countries (previously was only UK, France and Germany) added today. Sorry, but no Canada, Japan and Australian iTMS yet.

Well new countries would be nice, put the wannabe stores in their submissive places. I dont care about U2 they havent written anything great in years. Some other colors for 4G iPods would be cool, its a big selling point for the minis. One thing I find strange is how the writer uses the word “preprogrammed” what an idiot. Pre-loaded please, its a big difference.
