Apple announced Mac OS X 10.4 “Tiger” at its World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June 2004 and stated it would be released “in first half of 2005.” Apple debuted Mac OS X 10.0 “Cheetah” (Mac OS X 10.1 was codenamed “Puma,” Mac OS X 10.2 was codenamed “Jaguar,” and the current Mac OS X 10.3 is codenamed “Panther”) on March 24, 2001 for a suggested retail price of US$129.

$129 wow, isn’t that $30 more than 10.3?
Even if the update is $129 think about it. All of us loyal mac heads have shelled out for 10.0, 10.1, 10.2, 10.3, and now tiger. In my view of things this is a small price to pay to help our comp company create the ultimate OS.

All the paid updates have been $129 but occassionally Amazon and others have discounted them somewhat. Apple offers educational discounts and Fed employee discounts too so it’s usually possible to get it as low as $79.
Yeah those EDU and GOV discounts are nice for apple software, thats how I got 10.3X
If we are to believe Bezos… on the ship date… anyone think that Tiger will ship bundled on the dual 3 ghz G5 towers at that time ??

Hey Sputnik, did you give them your credit card number when you ordered Longhorn? You know, they don’t charge your credit card until your order ships. That means that you better have given them a card that has an expiration date after 1/1/07 or it will be expired by the time they try to charge it.

Then there’s the whole Apple being ahead of the game thing.
they’re always 129.. and if you don’t want it.. get ready to whine… because apple’s OS upgrades are really significant… the stuff developers can do with them will really expand
I will be very pleasantly surprised if 10.4 ships on or before 31 March 2005.
Because Apple’s official statements have always been “the first half of 2005” I have taken this to mean “on or before 30 June 2005”. So on or before 31 March 2005 will be a very pleasant surprise indeed.
Still with Ballmer’s recent statement to the media that Longhorn will “for sure” ship no later than 31 December 2006 Apple gets 18 months from the 30 June 2005 shipping of 10.4 to get the next iteration, Mac OS 10.5, out the door.
Two more Mac OS generations (10.4 and 10.5) before Longhorn ships sounds like a good thing to me!
At some point, apple has to give out an update for free. Off the top of my head…
10.0 : $30
10.1 : $20
10.2 : $130
10.3: $130
10.4 : $130
= $440 in FOUR YEARS for an operating system. Sure, 10.4 is better than 10.0, but we are basically paying to be in a beta program.
