New York’s Putnam Valley students and teachers get Apple iBook G4s

“Heavy backpacks stuffed with books may soon become artifacts in the Putnam Valley schools, where students and teachers are receiving free laptops this year with wireless Internet access. The computers – Apple iBook G4s – will be outfitted with compact discs and online textbooks and are part of a new initiative in the district to improve student achievement and prepare children for careers,” David Novich reports for The Journal News.

“All of the 120 middle and high school teachers have been given the portable computers. The seventh grade, with about 160 students, will get laptops during the second half of the year. The computers cost the district $200,000 and are considered a way to motivate students, who parents say would rather be playing games on their computers than doing homework,” Novich reports.

  2. If they lose their iBooks, no worries. That’s why there’s such a thing as back-up! ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”grin” style=”border:0;” />

When connected to the network at school, they could back-up all their home directories during a designated time, such as lunchtime.

  3. From what I’ve read about the other iBook school projects in the U.S.A., there’s a financial penalty for repeated mishandling of the iBooks and/or it’s taken away from them – and that’s a punishment the kids try to avoid at all costs.

As a result the computers are well cared for as a rule.

  4. It’s their pet computer ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” /> hehehe. I’d sure take good care of a computer that was given to me, especially an iBook G4. Heck, I’d take care of any Mac computer like it was my baby. I don’t have a car to lavish attention on, or an iPod, yet, so a computer would do fine. Too bad I’m in college and can’t pick up one of these bad boys.

  5. Whatch your step here if you are forced to use windows. (As I am from work) CoolWeb Spyware is being installed from this site probably by advertising. (intentionally? or just turning a blind eye?)
