“Qualcomm plans to integrate Microsoft Windows media technology into many of its cell phone chips, the companies said Thursday. The move is expected to be a boon for both wireless streaming services and for Microsoft, which has been struggling for a bigger share of the cell phone software market. The first line of Qualcomm chips to directly support Microsoft’s streaming audio and video technologies will be available by March, the companies said,” Ben Charny reports for CNET News.

In July, Motorola, Inc. and Apple announced they would partner to enable millions of music lovers to transfer their favorite songs from the iTunes jukebox on their Mac or PC, including songs from the iTunes Music Store, to Motorola’s next-generation ‘always with you’ mobile handsets, via a USB or Bluetooth wireless connection. Apple will create a new iTunes mobile music player, which Motorola will make the standard music application on all their mass-market music phones, expected to be available in the first half of next year.
in June, 2003, NTT DoCoMo announced that they had upgraded its “i-motion” video clip distribution service to provide higher audio quality and to make it compatible with Apple Computer Inc.’s QuickTime 6.3 software, which enabled users to share high- quality video, audio and text via 3G wireless technology. Content providers can make “i-motion” video content using QuickTime production tools and users can play both video and audio “i-motion” mail on their PCs.

Standards applied to phones? By this I assume you mean that the worlds cell phones will have over 100,000 viruses in a few years and rebooting your phone will be a ‘feature’ Micro$oft build in to their Mobile OS. Tell me Sputnik, will there be a Start Button? Now that would be funny…
I can just see it now, a horrible interface (worse than Symbian OS) and a colour palette taken from a crayon factory. 30 minute battery life and so hot you get a complimentary pair of oven gloves to use it.

I just emailed a friend who works for Sprint PCS, and he replied that Qualcomm uses the name Kyocera on their handsets here in the USA.
Why do all these do all these companies want to war, kill, or battle Apple all the time! Sheesh!

Think about it…now the phrase “Can you hear me now” is actually what all of us with Win$in phones are actually gonna be saying.
With the digital future moving away from the desktop, Microsoft has already lost. Mobile phone makers have done fine without MS so far, and will continue to do fine without it in the future …
Now viruses are going to call everyone in my phone’s memory and then call everyone in my friend’s phone’s memory and so on and so forth thereby causing a cellular network breakdown.
Just when I thought I was getting over dropped calls.
But, all this noise about M$ dipping their big toe into the cell phone market, makes me wonder.. if when they actually get a foothold… they start using the same kind of strong-arm tactics to make you download the latest security patch on your phone… as they illustrate .. here … to people using earlier WinCrap OSs..
“Blue Screen of Death” on cell phones? Dial 911 and find that the MS software crashes?
I hope that the cell phone industry recognizes that MS should be considered a reliable and relevant contender in communications after it has proven to develop more than rumors, security patches, and vaporware.
Qualcomm seem to be a good fit with MS, they too have been accused of abusing their dominant position in the market, unreasonable licensing and patent abuse.
Their near monopoly is in the US and has been blamed for much of the inferiority in cell phone operations in the US compared to most of the rest of the world.

On a side note picture messaging is well below market expectations in Europe. I agree with the “just give us a damned phone that works” type comments, maybe the market is agreeing with me on this.

Seriously, somebody needs to setup a petition to get the phone companies to produce phones, not phone/camera/mp3/radio/organisers.
My K700i would be so cool if it didn’t have the crappy camera on it. Maybe if they released versions wiith all the bells and whistles on for the Thurrotts of this world, and a basic version that allows Bluetooth Sync with Address Book and nothing else. I’m sure they’d sell well, I’d definitly have one.
