Microsoft to battle Apple over music opportunities on cell phones

“U.S. software giant Microsoft is aiming to get its audio and video software into mobile phones before it is beaten to the 650-million-handsets-a-year market by rivals like Apple. Microsoft has quietly made preparations to make its media software available to chip and handset makers, enabling consumers to play music they have saved in the Windows Media format on their PCs on their handsets,” Reuters reports.

“Microsoft will battle with Apple, which last month signed up Motorola to build in new cell phones a slimmed down version of the music player and piracy protection used in the iPod. Apple’s Frank Casanova, senior director of product marketing at Interactive Media Group, declined to say if his company was aiming for similar deals with other handset vendors. The company who gets the handset makers may also become the winner among the emerging Internet music stores,” Reuters reports.

Of course, the deal is “non-exclusive”.

I know I am going out on a limb, here, but I think there is an outside chance that Apples is talking to some other cell folks, both manufacturers and service providers.

“Sorry, I can’t – I’m just reinstalling WinMob OS on my phone, it keeps calling premium rate porn lines while it’s in my pocket. Must have a virus”

  4. Well Apple already started with Motorola, and I think it’s just a matter of time before it’s used even more.

Also, there is DoCoMo in Japan. They use 3GPP to deliver multimedia content, and guess what software they use to deliver it: QuickTime.

  5. enough hardware on the market.. better to be the software (to be the ‘ms’) in this case..

as thurrott accidentally realized.. it’s always better to be in software than hardware.. because you don’t have supply problems.. hell you barely need a factory at all.. just packaging..

in this case.. it’s MUCH better to be doing the software than the hardware

  6. I hope that Sony Ericsson licenses the technology. Those phones are the best for use with iSync (in my own humble opinion). I dont really care to listen to music on my phone cause it wouldnt hold what my iPod does but I would like to use my songs as ringtones

  7. Proving once again that Japanese cell phones really do get the best stuff. One reason cell phones are such a pain here is because there are different signal standards. Forget the fact that Microsoft already has an operating system on some cell phones, and other handheld devices. Microsoft should stick with what it does best. Now what was that? Oh, yeah: buying mice and keyboards and plastering their name on them. Aside from that, the only product possibly worth buying from them is Office for Mac and Age of Empires.
