Time: Apple’s new iMac G5 ‘quite possibly the coolest personal computer yet created’

“The best way to describe Apple’s iMac G5, which goes on sale later this month, is to say it looks like an iPod on growth hormones. It’s what you’d get if you stretched the pocket-size music player until it was 17 in. wide and 2 in. deep, squished a supercomputer into the casing and mounted the whole thing on a metal stand. The resemblance is not coincidental. More people buy iPods than iMacs these days, and Apple admits that this third-generation iMac is its best shot at luring millions of iPod owners further into Mac world – and inching up its current 3% share of the Windows-dominated market,’ Chris Taylor writes for Time Magazine.

“Will the strategy work? Only if those iPod owners open their wallets. The new iMac starts at $1,300 for the smaller model with a 17in. screen and goes up to $1,900 for the 20in. screen. That’s less than its predecessors but a bit more than the $250 to $500 iPods,” Taylor writes. “Still, what you get for that money is quite possibly the coolest personal computer yet created.”

“If Apple’s history is any guide, most computers sold over the next four years will have this clean, all-in-one display look. That history also suggests that very few of them will be iMacs. Apple is notorious for not having the supply to keep up with demand. Indeed, the release of this iMac was delayed by a shortage of the superfast G5 chips. At least iPod owners will have something to listen to while they wait,” Taylor writes.

  1. Well, finally someone in the Windows world thinks the new iMac is cool, huh? We knew it all along, right? Hmmm. Actually, I thought the iPod was overpriced at $400 for 5 gigabytes. Boy, was I wrong. Then I thought the iPod mini was overpriced at $250 for 4 gigabytes. Wrong again.

I think the iMac G5 is cool and a bargain. Will I be wrong again? FWIW, some folks think it’s a bargain and others think it’s overpriced, crippled eye candy.

    Like this guy. Funny piece.

BTW – what’s up with MDN? Funny pages showing up from time to time; other times no ads or graphics, other times no comments.

  2. When you deduct the price of the LCD screen from the total, the iMac G5 guts seem reasonably priced IMO. I see little room to complain as long as Apple adjusts the price to reflect the gradual decline in LCD display prices.

The iMac G5 is certainly a much better value than the iMac G4, which I considered to be the weakest price/performance link in the Macintosh line. Until recently I was considering an eMac because of its great value. But Apple came through with the iMac G5 in terms of price/performance, serviceability and footprint.

  3. Ron,

What are you smoking, and where can we get some? Dell and XP? The spyware creates a triad of horror that makes the Bremuda Triangle look like a quilting bee.

The iMac G5 will eat PCs alive in performance and coolness.

  4. Ron, you are right on target. Apple doesn’t make any of the parts, like hard drives, and OSX is created internally, so that should be less than the fee Microsoft charges. I guess when you only have 2% of the market, you have to charge exorbintant fees. MacWeenies expect far less for far more money, and take it bending over.

  5. Hey Ron, even Windows freak Paul Thurrott admits “Price to price, the new iMac compares very well to the best Dell has to offer. I’ve checked it, and if you don’t believe it, you should look it up too.”

Maybe you should do a little research before parroting the same tired old crap. And if you like your Dell/XP combo, fine, enjoy it. Just learn to accept that we don’t all have to be the same.

  6. Is Time magazine the only non-biased news source when it comes to Mac.

I wanted to buy a G4 Cube in 2000 because it was on the cover of Time magazine, but personal and financial matters got in the way.

The G4 flat-panel 17″ iMac was what I ended up buying when money matters got better. Do you think the coverage in Time magazine made a difference? You bet it did. It may do the same for the new G5 iMac.

Even though I had determined long ago “If I ever get a computer, it will be a Mac”, because of the 1984 commercial. On the other hand, when it came time to actually buy my Mac, it was Time magazine that reminded me of the seed that had been planted so many years before.

Thank you Time/Warner for doing at least this right.

  7. “Apple admits that this third-generation iMac is its best shot at luring millions of iPod owners further into Mac world”

best shot? Not hardly. The sub $1000 headless toaster size g5 that many here have described and wished for would lure millions who wouldn’t have to rebuy a monitor and could run multiple monitors as so many already do. The new imac is the latest in apple’s design (although it does look more etchasketchy to me with time). Market share isn’t at all the point. Sticking with the design gospel and NOT keeping Ron happy is.

  8. My PC is a neat device! It keeps me busy all day. I get up, check my mail, do my updates, and spend the rest of the day disinfecting my system. It makes one’s day complete. On the other hand, if I had a MAC I would have nothing to do all day. That’s not living man!

  9. I sure hope Apple gets it together on the supply side. For a short time being short of a product is OK because it makes it seem more popular and even more coveted. After a while that wears thin though. Hopefully all will be well by Christmas.

  10. jayyy…

Well, its a G5… and it has what some would say a decent video card….

Considering the fact that, in the past, people have been known to do graphics on the 68k macs…. I would think that you could do some pretty darn good graphics on the iMac….

It would probably depend more on what programs youre using, and how adept you are with these programs.. than the unforseen limitations of the G5 iMac..

Budget minded, but still need power?? … Then go for it… But, if you can afford more… and want more… then look to the G5 towers for the “Pro” line…

Both will have no trouble running Tiger

Let your wallet be your guide..

  11. “……Never has a computer company offered so little for $o much.”

You can expect this kind of drivel from someone who calls himself “PCs Rule”….

FYI “PeeCees Rule”….. Tell me if youve installed the latest “patch” to your XP ?? … I think theyre calling it “SP2″….. You know the one… that opens more holes than it closes !! LOL !!

If you had any brains at all… you might want to try using a Macintosh for about 2 weeks or so…. then come back here and tell us all what you thought… (honestly)

Another thing…. you claim that Mac people are “taking it bending over” ?? …. Really ?? …. Have you checked out the G5 processor??? ….. Light years ahead of what Intel is forcing on you…
    The G5 is a real 64-bit chip….
    And Intel’s 64-bit chip is called…. what again ?

Not only that, but have you checked out the “Frontside Bus” on all of the new G5s??

And what did you say the “Frontside Bus” is on your cheap PC ??

Let us know if you’d like to learn a real Operating System…. not a Mac Clone written over DOS … LOL !!

Im sure there are some, here, who wouldnt mind showing you how easy it really is to work and play on a Mac…. without trojans, popups, spyware…. or Micro$oft, for that matter….

Do you have the huevos to take the challenge ???

    I didnt think so…

  12. ruth

you left out one freebie of major importance. One that ALL PC owners enjoy in triple and quadruple doses….

    FRUSTRATION

Yup, plenty of that thrown in for FREE when you work on any PC.

Frustration for freezes, crashes, viruses, spyware etc etc
