Apple looking to add wireless connectivity to iPod, rumored Tablet Mac?

“Apple is looking for two iPod hardware engineers both with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi experience, opening the possibility that the portable music player may be upgraded with wireless connectivity. The job applications – which you can view here and here – was posted on behalf of Apple’s iPod division and calls for candidates with ‘a consumer electronics background dealing with high volume, low power, high quality products,'” Tony Smith reports for The Register.

“The iPod is certainly a good candidate itself for wireless connectivity. Its PDA-style synchronisation with not only iTunes but Apple’s own PIM apps suits it to quick wireless data transfers. Bluetooth is probably not a suitable alternative to Firewire or USB 2.0, but Wi-Fi would be,” Smith reports. “But we suspect Apple has its eye on wireless not as an alternative to the cable connecting the iPod to a host Mac or PC, but to equip the device with the tools needed to communicate remotely with said host and Apple’s AirPort Express music-routing Wi-Fi access point.”

“Alternatively, the iPod division may be behind the mysterious ‘tablet Mac’ we reported on recently, which has also been described as a possible iTunes/AirPort Express remote control unit,” Smith writes. “At the very least, Apple is keen on increased integration between Wi-Fi and iTunes, and there’s a big hole in its product line here: the remote control system. Whether it has in mind something a simple as an 802.11-enabled iPod, a more complex tablet-style computer, or both, remains to be seen.”

  1. It’s for the new Apple iTimeMachine they’re developing so they can go back to 1984 and make sure they’ve written their contracts properly ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”grin” style=”border:0;” />

I’d say it’s a little more than opening the possibility. Now I’ll be able to finally buy an ipod with the features I need. Can’t wait.

  3. sorry repeat what everyone here already knows, but apple already makes portable devices that control itunes and the airport express. you can choose yours in brushed metal or all white.

Ah yes, the Powerbook or the iBook. But can they fit in the palm of your hand?

  5. If Apple can squeeze wifi into Airport Express, I am sure they can figure out how to add it to the iPod.

I am holding off on upgrading my 1G iPod waiting for this feature. I want to be able to iPod -> AE -> Stereo without needing a Mac inbetween.

  6. a better feature would be to make songs loaded on your iPod playable through iTunes on any machine, like the shared music feature.

anoyone with airport express is going to (obviously) already have a mac. therefor it would be a useless waste of your battery and unecessary increase in size to the unit itself to stream iPod tunes to your stereo via AE. you could just hook your iPod up to the mac, save your battery, and let the mac stream the tunes.

  7. On second thought, as I reviewed my statement, perhaps it wouldn’t be so obvious that some with Express has a mac already if it’s made possible for iPod to stream directly to it. This may indeed sell some Express units to non mac customers, but I do think it’s loigcal to conclude that only a very small minority of those that would then have Airport Express would be non-mac computer users.

Time will tell, but I contend that if someone wants a remote for iTunes, they (and the iPod) would be better off if Apple sold them a dedicated wireless remote with display that can control iTunes and also affords you all or most of the functionality of the iTunes interface. It’d be far cheaper than the $300 iPod or $249 mini and wouldn’t be an unnecessary feature that eats the battery life of the vast majority of the iPods that belong to people who would never use that feature or would only use it until the fad wears off.

The remote , coupled with the ability for iPod songs to be playable as a shared library off the HD when mounted to other macs would be a much, much better solution, IMO. But I am not a product advisor, so undoubtedly there is a better solution than that.
