“Apple said that this fall Duke University will give iPods to all incoming freshman. Duke will hand out approximately 1,800 iPods that will be pre-loaded with Duke-related content and will allow students to download supplementary university material in addition to being able to play music,” Rex Crum reports for CBS MarketWatch.

That will be one swinging campus.
Damn…nice!
start checking ebay…
is Duke a mac campus?
How cool is that..!!!???
its not fair all i received was a free folder
That freakin’ ROCKS!
more good news for Apple. Lately, it’s been nothing but good news. This is the year that Apple begins to turn the corner in the minds of the masses. It may be the year that the bizarre amount of bad press Apple regularly recieves starts to look old and unwarrented and not *news*. I think that by 2006 Apple will have 6% marketshare, but thats me being optimistic. No matter how you slice it, though, Apple’s stock has been looking real good lately – imagine if they release a computer thats a big hit?
Man, I can’t stand Duke, but I may have to rethink my position on that. Wonder which one they will give them.
What a deal, 40 grand for an iPod!
That is unless your on a scholarship
“…more good news for Apple. Lately, it’s been nothing but good news. This is the year that Apple begins to turn the corner in the minds of the masses….”
Been sayin’ that every year since 1984. Never happens. Think, “iPod” vs. “ONE BILLION WINDOWS USERS BY 2010”
Them Devils aren’t just all about basketball. Good creative use for the iPod!
HaHa–those lucky SOBs!!! If I were a Duke upper class man, I’d organize the other classes to DEMAND our own! Obviously GREAT for Apple if this catches on…
iPod might be a nice device, but MACs are forever doomed to 2nd rate sales. Duke still doesn’t have my vote. They’d need to give away free cars to convince me to attend.
I agree that Mac sales will never match Dell sales, but I do contend that Mac sales can be close to or slightly better than IBM sales.
I hear ya thelonious…keep the faith! Apple is in the best shape it’s been in for a long, long time…
Hey PCFan…go have your generic Microsoft crap. Windows Media Center….OOH…WHAT A COOL NAME FOR A DEVICE THAT PLAYS DVD’S!!! Man, I want one so bad.
No I don’t. I just ordered my new top-of-the-line 40G today with all the fixin’s, AND FREE LASER ENGRAVING! Microsoft wouldn’t laser engrave a damn thing, because it’s all crap.
Why do PC people bug us. I seriously doubt the Microsoft boards are infested with pissed off Mac users taking stabs at them. Get a life. It’s like all these people I know that are Atheists talk more about God than people who actually believe it. That’s what you stupid PC people are who come here. If your PC is so great, then WHY BOTHER US? If you are so confident that you are right, then why post here? Just be secure in your POS computer company and leave us alone.
That’s a 40G iPod, by the way. I got it for my girlfriend and I don’t even think her computer hard drive is that big. Oh well. She thinks she is getting a mini.
I like Apple very much, but should Duke actually do this? Duke is an educational institution and I think the money should be wisely spent on helping students get iBooks or something. What is so important about iPods “pre-loaded with Duke-related content”?
This isn’t about music, but the use of the iPod as a file carrier. It’s about loading extensive material on the device, transferring it to your computer, uploading a completed assignment and maybe submitting it electronically, bypassing email and network or web.
Or could it’s just a marketing ploy? Free iPods for staff? Ahh… someone talked to Stevie (RDF)!
Could be about users who insist on using windows not spreading electronic VD about campus. Here’s the background reading: Physics 101.01.m4a.
That’s just too uber-cool.
And why not Memory Sticks instead of iPods? They do exactly the same thing cept play music directly. They’re also a hell of a lot cheaper.
Let me tell you, the news of the new iPod in general is everywhere. Do a search on Google News (sort by date) and news organizations everywhere are talking about this.
Frickin’ awesome!
It’s also on the front page of CNN.

That’s what $30K/year will buy you.
Pay your fee, get your “B” (and an iPod).
