RUMOR: New 4G ‘slim’ iPods in a variety of colors to debut in August

“Apple will announce new iPod models in August, reliable sources have confirmed to Think Secret. The new models will be smaller, sleeker, and will come in a variety of colors,” ThinkSecret reports. “The new iPod models will reportedly be more compact and have been described as similar to the iPod mini in design, but will still possess features found only in the existing white-colored model.”

Sources report the new models will be available in a variety of new colors… [and feature] larger hard drive sizes as compared to Apple’s current offerings. Pricing is expected to be similar to the current iPod MSRP,” ThinkSecret reports.

MacDailyNews Take: Rumor. Grain of salt and all that. Sounds logical, though. The only thing is, will they have color screens, too?

  1. There go my two reasons for wanting an iPod Mini: colours and slimness. I can wait for a few more weeks, especially with all this uncertainty about availability for iPod Minis.

  2. Think Secret is very rarely wrong. Though, that’s mostly because they get word of these things only days before they are announced. This one is weeks off, not days, so it’s not their style. However, I believe it.

  3. Voice recorder is made by third parties such as Belkin and will eventually come to the mini. All accesories available for regular iPod will migrate to mini eventually. It took over a year for the same devices to be available for the regular iPod from vendors.

  4. larger HD’s.. 4G ipOds.. haha.. okay i get it.. 4th Generation..

Actually Apple would be silly to change the dimensions too much, unless most accessories are adjustable.. it could get really annoying using ipod accessories, like, sleeves, holders etc

  5. I hope Apple gets all the parts snafus fixed soon. I have people waiting for mini’s but now when they come available over here I may have to tell my friends that maybe they should wait just a bit more. This waiting is not a good situation. High quality problem for Apple though, more demand that they can fill.

  6. i hope that apple adopts the ‘rocking scrollwheel’ from the ipod mini in the new 4G ipods. the only reason i never upgraded my 2G ipod to the current 3Gs was because i can’t stand the four-buttons-above-the-scrollwheel layout. i’ve tried using the new scrollwheel on my wife’s ipod mini, and it is just so much better – or at least just as good as the old 2G scrollwheel before apple messed it up.

  7. This thread isn’t about mini’s. It’s about regular iPods. Hitachi is increasing production but Apple said today that they would still not get enough drives to fullfill orders for the minis for the rest of the year. Regular iPods don’t have the same problem as Toshiba makes the drives for them. The only possible constraint on supplies may be for the reported new 60 GB drive from Toshiba. Look for Apple to announce a Special Event in the next week or so to introduce the new iPods and to show off the hPod as well.

  8. One other thing. Dimensions of the iPod will remain the same except for the thickness. Previously the hard drive has been attached via a ribbon which takes up a lot of space. The new drive will be imbedded directly into the circuit board and take up less space and hopefully leave more room for a slightly larger battery which would mean more battery life per charge. We’ll know soon enough.

  9. WOW – A variety of colours? Golly!

Rumors and reports aside, I hope Apple are taking note of what the other bunnies like Sony are doing, and we’ll see a better price point and expanded feature set. As for colours, Apple can keep them – whites fine by me.

  10. Expanded feature set is over rated, otherwise Apple with it’s ‘Minimum” features would not be so overwhelmingly ahead of the competition. The Dell DJ has better battery life, and other competitors have built-in radios and recording capability yet they have not really affected the iPods leadership in market share. Of course Apple is aware of what Sony is doing! Geez. There have been frontal attacks on the iPod from many other companies and they have not affected the iPod to any extent. As a matter of fact the iPod is not outselling ALL players, both Flash and Hard Drive.

  11. This bloody typical – the minis havent even been released in the UK yet!!

By the time we get the ipod mini the produc will be over a year old – obsolete in IT terms!

Apple might as well just cancel the mini launch and just launch the new ipods in August (onr month later!!).

I was gonna buy a mini but now im gonna wait 4 weeks and get a totally new ipod design instead.

Apple really missed the boat on launching the mini – they should have estimated demand based on sales of the original white ipod and made enough so that it was launched globally at the same time.

Just think – that’s a whole year of people buying another makers mp3 player and NOT Apple’s mini – Apple has lost alot of potential revenues and customers by not making enough minis for worldwide consumption!

I hope they’ve learnt their lesson and will make enough of the new ipods for global release!

  12. By the time we get the ipod mini the produc will be over a year old – obsolete in IT terms!” – solar flare

Or you may just get iPod mini v.2.0 . All bugs have been squashed out and new features added in. The design may be better too. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />
    Be optimistic!

“Just think – that’s a whole year of people buying another makers mp3 player and NOT Apple’s mini – Apple has lost alot of potential revenues and customers by not making enough minis for worldwide consumption!”

I call bullshit on that. Apple has the market and mindshare. People don’t read rumour sites – they buy what they want and most people want iPods or minis. They will wait. The international sales of the mini will no doubt be unprecedented. When the new iPod comes out people will buy that too. That’s just what being on top means.

I also second the claim made above that the iPod spends so much of its time in my pocket that disc size and form factor are the only real issues. And enough about battery life already! What % of users actually drain the battery in one go and say to themselves “gee i wish i had longer battery life!” I suspect most – like me – recharge every couple of days and are blissfully happy.

/thinks ‘video-out’ is a good idea if only to be first to make video-on-the-go useful
    //wouldn’t use video-on-the-go
