“Heat related issues are said to be at the root of Apple’s latest iMac blunder, which has left the computer maker without a consumer desktop offering for the busy back-to-school shopping season,” Kasper Jade reports for AppleInsider.

“Earlier this month, Apple’s Public Relations department performed a most unorthodox act when it quietly announced to the Mac faithful that the company had run out of its current iMac G4 computers and new models would not be available for another two months,” Jade reports. “Reliable information suggests that Apple had initially intended to launch an all-new iMac product-line early this Summer, which sources confirmed would include a low-end PowerPC G5 processor and a completely remodeled appearance. What exactly caused the unfortunate iMac delay, Apple may never say. However, well placed sources tell AppleInsider that a heat issue affecting the new iMac enclosure is to blame.”

I’m guessing there will be a 17″ and 20″ it will be a 1.6 Ghz G5(imagine 2ghz) the 17″ will b 1699 maybe 1599. Hopefully a model will cost 1499. It’s gonna look high like the displays. It will have a wireless keyboard and mouse. Great. Steve Jobs is going to blow everyone away. That’s great that he called the winner.

I think that 1.6 GHz is a very conservative estimate. The current generation of G5 CPUs are 1.8, 2.0 and 2.5 GHz. If Apple were to utilise a single G5 processor for the next iMac then it could use either of the first two and still distinguish between the consumer and proffesional products; the PowerMacs are, after all, dual CPU computers. At present 2.5 GHz would not be an option due to the liquid cooling it requires.
The form factor of this rumoured iMac sounds very ambitious. If everything is mounted behind the LCD screen then it would certainly be a very compact design, even more so than the current iMacs.
Would a new keyboard be too much to hope for?
Headless, DVI only with VESA mounting clip for 20in or 23in display. Possibly re-introduce a 17in screen at launch, targeted for this market.

Powerbook G5’s will be liquid cooled as well. But your going to have to wait for that for next year.
By the way I have seen the tech drawings for the new iMac, I can’t visualize what it will be like in 3D, but it’s a WOW factor.

I imagine the new G5s are super-duper hot, but an overclocked 1.8 G5 to 2.0 is just super hot…so they thinking super hot or super-duper hot…which one to add the apple juice cooler to????
Apple is probably using the eariler 120nm chip for the new iMac and not the newer 90nm which runs even hotter. There is no need for liquid cooling for a single chip (even the newer one doesn’t require it in the dual 1.8-2.0 GHz version. – look at the specs). Don’t you people pay attention? Only the dual 2.5 Ghz chip in the Powermac has liquid cooling. Geez.
This “report” sounds like a lot of random speculation at best. I’ll just wait until August 31st to see the real thing and then form my opinion. But based on this speculative article, I must say I’m not terribly excited about the prospects of what’s coming. Hopefully I’ll be wrong when August 31st rolls around though and the finished product is revealed. It could very easily be quite different from what the speculation of it has been.
Hey, in the end we’re talking about a computer. I realize people expect Apple to come up with something spectacular and different. But this doesn’t guarantee success. If it did Dell, HP and the others wouldn’t be industry leaders. In the end the average user doesn’t care about looks, only about functionality and price. As JimR says let’s wait and actually SEE what the new iMac looks like and what if offers. It never fails that so-called Apple fans start complaining about something they haven’t even seen. Immature to say the least methinks.

Apple thought they could stick the g5 in new imac without any cooling device…ala the cube…g5 was probably melting the plastic off the wallpaper next door it was so hot.

That is an understatement…the cube and imac were definitely not the success that Jobs touted them to be.
