iMac delay won’t hurt Apple in education market, Apple sells iBook and eMac to schools

“Shares in Apple Computer Inc. fell about 6 percent in premarket trade on Friday, a day after the computer maker said it would delay the introduction of its next iMac computer, a stumble that comes at the crucial back-to-school sales season,” Reuters reports.

“‘We planned our next-generation iMac ready by the time the inventory of current iMacs runs out in the next few weeks,’ the company said in a statement. ‘But our planning was obviously less than perfect.’ The Cupertino, California-based company has been emphasizing other computer lines for the education market — such as its iBook notebook PC and eMac desktop computer — which analysts said could help it avoid a shortfall,” Reuters reports.

  1. Of course the iMac and desktops in general are not the preferred choice for students to take to college with them. Laptops are. eMacs continue to sell to K-12 schools. All this fuss is because Apple has had a stock great run-up in recent months. It was going to experience sell-offs no matter. It will be fun again to start seeing “photos” and “drawings” of the supposed new iMac in the coming weeks. Just like the good old days. I truly believe SJ will show the computer at the Paris Expo (or at least begin a teaser campaign). This will do what advertising can do best… provide word and mouth and expectations. One other thing, AT&T points out that the original iMac was shown 3 MONTHS prior to its introduction! Apple seems to be making this announcement for legal reasons perhaps.

  2. heh heh heh, there should be a Fark-like contest for the worst ‘rumored leaked iMac photos’…

Naw, scratch that. People would just keep submitting pictures of Dells and Gateways.

  3. This is one time at least that the analysts nailed it right on the head. Hopefully the new iMac will be more appealing to the education market and the mid-range consumer market than the old one was.

  4. there is nothing wrong with 3D bogus hardware art. in fact – i think we should promote its use even more. i am waiting for the G5 with an anti-matter plasma heat-sync and warp drive fans.

  5. twelveightyone:

I think you got the color all wrong. Otherwise looks about right to me.

Oh, by the way, where is our friend Paul Thurott on this subject? He’s probably on his summer vacation in the Hamptons!

  6. This should not be what the news is…the real news is that there are absolutely NO 1.25 ghz Emacs with superdrive to be found anywhere. They are all backordered from every possible location and I have spent all day searching. The price/performance demand for this machine is HUGE! Currently there is no comparison of price/screen/software/performance to this particular machine.

  7. Georgy, the only gripe/concern I had with the eMac is the screen resolution was quite limited. Everything else was super-attractive to me when I was looking at a new machine for the office last month – I ended up with a 17″ iMac (one of the last ones?) with the bigger HD & bluetooth & AE and everything else that could come with the TOL eMac, and then comes that silly announcement yesterday about the “next generation” of iMac coming this September.

Let’s see, now – last time this happened to me I bought what must have been one of the last Beige DTs in June 1998, and many of you already know where I’m going with this. Know what came in October that year? Yup. The original Bondi iMac was introduced. I was happy with what I had, though, because that DT lasted and lasted with quite a few internal upgrades until Christmas of 2002 when I upgraded to a 14″ iBook (as a matter of fact, that old DT still going strong at my sister’s house in Kentucky). So I’ve discovered that all I need to do is buy a new Mac, and WHA-BAM, you can expect Apple to announce/ship something brand-spanking new three or four months later. I know, I know, that makes it all my fault. Sorry.

  8. Not sure what you mean georgyporgy. The online store says the superdrive emacs are shipping in 3-5 days. Are you opposed to buying online?

You are right about the price/performance ratio. I’m selling a lot of these to people as a 2nd computer for their kids. The attraction of no viruses/spyware is enough to make the sale. The kids are gonna be mad when mom and dad hog their machine after the next worm hits their wintel machine.

  9. Kids will really be mad when they find out how poor of gaming machine it is. not even a option for 64 mb video from 3 years ago. This is Apples whole problem and why consumer have flocked away from Macs in general.

  10. There are plenty of games on the Mac platform. The ones not on it can be found on a Playstation 2. I don’t see average consumers buying systems for their college-bound students being worried what games it plays. The only time consumers avoid purchasing the Mac is when they listen to dolts like Spock.
