Survey: average Windows PC is ‘sick’ more days per year than average human

“The average PC is ‘sick’ for more days annually because of virus infection and spam overload than the average human, according to Yahoo Mail. The average UK PC is rendered unusable for the equivalent of around nine working days every year because the owner is cleaning up spam or fighting viruses. This is two days a year more than the average UK worker takes off as sick leave, according to Yahoo,” Munir Kotadia reports for ZDNet UK.

“A survey of 2,500 UK email users found that 70 percent of users had been infected by a virus in the past year and 42 percent say they found it less stressful fighting their way through rush-hour traffic than finding legitimate emails among the spam in their inboxes,” Kotadia reports.

  1. Regular maintenance is a part of normal computer operation.

The real IT world knows that in order to keep your systems healthy you need to to do a clean install using a mirror system on a nightly schedule.

This process is no different then the oil change you perform on your Yugo every three months.

  2. >>”The average PC is ‘sick’ for more days annually because of virus infection and spam overload than the average human,

I’ve never had Spam overload, but it sure sounds disgusting…

  3. Hey Sput,

I am glad that you are not manufacturing the electronics that I use. If that’s the case, I will have a full-time job in taking maintaining all the electronic items in my house.

    1. Audio system: Every month
    2. DVD player: twice a month
    3. VHS player: once in two months
    4. Television: once a week.

And not having to take an Apple Mac running OS X that often: Priceless.

  4. Sputnik,
whats the deal? Your sarcasm is usually much harder to read at first glance, and your last few posts have been way too obvious.
    Are you losing it?

Or are you just a Sputnik imposter?

  5. Sputnik: A while back I came down on you pretty hard in response to what I thought was a PeeCee troll spreading FUD. Just wanna say Im sorry. You had me fooled real good. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />

  6. Re: NoMacFor You

Haha!! There is no WAY that I believe that! Absolutley not.

I am in an work environment – mostly PCs, and the IT people are always helping them out – Always. Me, I watch over the Mac section which there are roughly 12 in the design area – and there is very seldom a problem.

Yeah, you watch over 3000+ PCs, right?! And they never have a problem? Now that’ss BS, unless of course if they are all unplugged.

  7. Nice to see that folks are catching on to the Red Herring named Sputnik.

The ‘real’ Sputnik leaves hit’n’run posts near the top of the thread. He’s a Grade A ‘Shit Stirrier’ to be sure. Further reading of subsequent posts don’t ‘read’ like his. Not the right brand of sarcasm.

I too, love the Yugo ref, and the ‘confession’ of himself being an ‘idiot’ on another thread.

The Russian handle seems an obvious ‘Red Herring’, the dry humored sarcasm seems British.

Anyway, these guesses are certainly more fun than the abusive flames that get set our way. (Ron, Jay, et al.)

On topic, the UK has social medical. I wonder if they could extend that to their ‘sick’ PeeCees ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />

  8. The main focus of the article is on spam, something that can affect anyone with an email address. I’m grateful for my ISP and for Apple’s Mail program. That combination lets only about 5% of the spam into my inbox. It’s made me very happy ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />

  9. “But the use of THAN instead of THEN, that’s American.”

MacBuddy, Sputz used THEN instead of THAN, but I know what you mean. Definitely an American slacker who didn’t pay attention in grade school, middle school, or high school, and spends way too much time on AIM.

P.S. I’m American, I should know. Kids these days don’t spend nearly enough time drilling on the English language.

  10. RE: JJ
    Did you read my post?
I made no reference to PC’s not having any problems.
I was saying the the 350+ macs in the office are more of a burden than the 3000+ PCs. We run active directory with policy enforcement so its pretty difficult for some stupid user to jack something up…Macs consistantly crash in quark or during printing or sometimes just opening one friggin email. So dont give me that BS. Oh did I mention kernel panics(The mac version of BSOD) or is that just another feature that i’m un-aware of?

your just another pissed off minion of mac maker that didnt get your way when MS came along…12 Systems? Oooooo Ahhhhhh
    You dont know jack…

  11. Oooops, I did say ‘than’ instead of ‘then’ ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />

Oh Well, I’m glad you knew I wasn’t referring to THAT specific instance of THEN/THAN – although it could be included. I meant his tendency to make that mistake.

Any thoughts regarding his genuineness? True WinTroll or MacOlyte having a laugh?

  12. re: nomac whatever …

Maybe I don’t know jack, and you are right – I did reread your post and you did not say anything to the fact of your PCs not having problems. I take that back. And my 12 Macs do pale in comparison hugely to your 350+ macs. That’s quite a lot of computers. Where the hell do you work?

Anyways, well, What I was trying to say before is the macs here don’t have too many problems at all – I can’t remember the last one. I haven’t had a kernal panic since 10.2. My machine and all of ours stay on during the week. So, yes, my story is on a much smaller scale than yours. I do take back my hastey comments of which I posted earlier. I was just thinking of the situation I am in.

And the It guys are all really bright with Windows and such, but it always seems like there’s some virus or some hardware failure… and macs are always unaffected.

    BTW – I do know Jack, just on a smaller scale. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />

  13. There are lies, damn lies, and statistics. [Neanderthal man]

If the average PC is sick for 9 days, some PCs are unaffected because they are hardly active as the user has been cowed into severely curtailing activity; others are down for months as the user is too busy to do the cleaning up or not savvy / confident enough to do it himself. And half of the PCs — those that could not participate in the survey — are down for half a year or more and in the process of being dumped for another shistebox, as soon as their owners can recover some money from identity thieves [unlikely].

W_users: identity thieves are downloading child porn through your peecee without you even knowing it. Why do you thnk it runs so slow? Don’t end up in jail: dump your peecee and save your a_s_s. Do it NOW!

  14. NoMacForYou said, “Another BS Article from ZDNet…I have control over 3000+ PC’s And they arent ever as much of a problem as the Macs we have…”

Reports over the past several years from the Gartner Group have stated that Wintel-based computers require one IT person per 20-25 computers. Back in 1996, the “Seattle Times” reported that the Intel factory, which makes the infamous Pentium chips [bricks] had a network of 160 Macs in the facility – all supported by ONE part-time individual.

If NoMacForYou really has “control” over some 3000 PCs, I suspect that it’s probably via spyware. That being the case, then Macs would indeed give NoMacForYou more problems…he is not at all likely to install spyware on a Mac.
