Apple’s QuickTime vaults into close second in media player market share

“Apple Computer is beaming about the progress that QuickTime has been making compared to alternatives like Microsoft Windows Media Player and RealNetworks Real Player,” Michael Singer reports for InternetNews.com.

“A recent report on media player market share sales for client and enterprise applications by research firm Frost & Sullivan showed Apple moving into second position with 36.8 percent of the market, after running a distant third a few years ago. That puts Apple above Real, which controls 24.9 percent and not too far off from Microsoft and its share of 38.2 percent,” Singer reports. “Apple also issued a statement Thursday saying more than 250 million copies of QuickTime version 6 have been downloaded since its 2002 release.”

  1. Hahaha!!! Sputnik is one of the ones that I said should check for lobotomy scars. The comment “WMP works great 90+% of the time” was so outlandishly inaccurate I had to wonder if he didn’t mean 9+%. Besides, Sputnik helped solidify our point because Quicktime works 99+% of the time. Still better than WMP, even against Sputnik’s over-inflated estimates. What HMO are you with, Sputnik? Maybe you could file a malpractice suit for that failed lobotomy!

  2. McConnel: you wrote: “thanks for kicking the bucket Ron!”

Responding to that gives you an acknowlgement that something like you does not deserve, but….

Possibly someone will remember you in the same way when you go.

  3. Hey Joe Mc, how is the writer’s antecdotal note that “everyone has 3 players on their machine” any more/less valid than your statement that all your buddies have Real and WMP but wouldn’t know QT if it bit them?

Actually, his may be even MORE valid because he actually did some research?

Joe doesn’t like it when the numbers don’t favor Windows…

  4. Hey, think about this:
    1) Quicktime runs on Mac and Windows
    2) Tiger is going to have a tighter .Mac-Integration, forming a new business model: “buy an OS and rent some additional functionality”
    3) Tiger depends heavily on Quicktime
    4) Tiger is ported to Intel (maybe as a “second-best-to-mac-but-still-good-enough-for-the-typical-winblows-user”-version)
    5) PC-Users are buying Tiger and .Mac-subscriptions, Apple makes as much money by this as by selling Mac-Hardware.
    6) Bill G. starts weeping

  5. Many people on various sites make the statement that “iTunes is the Trojan Horse and QuickTime is the payload”, but the truth is that iPod is the Trojan Horse, iTunes are a bunch of Greeks inside the Horse, and QuickTime is the nasty, sharp, pointy sword that the Greeks are going to use to make shish kebab.

Poor Microsoft – all those millions spent developing a lock-in media strategy, whilst bribing a bunch of stooges they know who they are to promote Windows Media as the panacea of the Digital Age only to have it subverted by an MP3 player and legalised downloads at 99 a time.

    I’d cry if I wasn’t laughing!

Now if only Real would lie down and die.

  6. Ronald Reagans Death is just another fine example of how the Liberal Media doesn’t cover Right Wing issues, or give credit to Right Wing Leaders, such as Ronald Reagon.

    NOT!!!

  7. Being a Mac user would be a lot better if the 5 idiot republicans who use macs would switch to the dark side where they belong. Macs are too good for republicans

  8. Just remember. Be careful of befriending the enemy of your enemy.

  9. My favorite Bumber Sticker:

Annoy a Liberal; Work hard, Be happy

Being that macs work more than PCs and Repub work more than Libs, id say we have more of a right to macs than you.

” Being that macs work more than PCs and Repub work more than Libs, id say we have more of a right to macs than you.”

I wasn’t going to comment any more on the subject, but you hit a home run!

Oops, sorry, sports analogy’s probably won’t play well here.

And I am not even a Republican, but an independent.

    The bait is out there……

  11. The sun is over the yardarm finally.

kenh, I liked Reagan, and appreciated his strengths (and awesome luck) while acknowledging his considerable faults. And I needed a day off. Most of my friends WOULD love it if my death caused a holiday (some might even help the process).

Jimbo, since my question about just how one determines the use of largely free programs by analysing “sales” still stands, I think my anecdotal evidence stands up quite well.
As to my predilection for what favors wintel, you know that isn’t true. I just don’t believe everything I read, from either camp.

  12. Right on Beth.
Also, Be a Republican if you think it is worth $1 billion a week in tax payer money to kill 10,000 innocent Iraqis, 1000 innocent american soldiers, just to make your Daddy proud. We are left with a huge new breeding ground for terrorists and a complete loss of respect for the US throughout the world. Quagmire Accomplished!

  13. Joe Mc, that was a lovely piece by Mr. Walesa. We all remember him well. We also remember that he has a skewed view of things. Here’s a more accurate view of the Reagan years a seen through clearer glasses from someone that was not skewed by being Ronnie’s friend.

By the way, how is Grandpa’s note oversimplified? It tells the whole story.

  14. Of course, we’ve yet to hear from Jay Rice. I’m sure his shift is over soon at the 7-11, and as soon as that Klan rally is done, I’m sure he’ll be right here…

  15. Jimbo, didn’t he leave out the blood for oil part?

Walesa might be skewed, but it is because he was tired of being screwed.

The best book on Reagan I have read, and one you might like Jimbo, since I do recall you have a fair bone in your body, is by the wunderkid David Stockman, “The Triumph of Politics: Why The Reagan Revolution Failed”.

You might give it a read, but, if your mind is made up on stuff political, don’t bother, since it is easy to cruise the web and find what supports your side. Personally, I stay flexible. It’s harder, but better for my blood pressure, and I get to have friends from both sides. adios until Monday.

  16. I just think it’s hilarious when you hear all these people talking about “The Liberal Media”, and do you think we’d have all this fanfare on the news if Cater had died? No. But, yeah the “Liberal Media” is to blame when anything not on the right adgenda gets reported. And Carter is five times the man Reagan was in my opinion…

  17. gspank, Carter is a heck of a guy, but is deemed a failure by most. Reagan was very controversial, and a lot happened in his tenure. As for fanfare, check this out.

I doubt you will read more than a single headline, but the point is that while covering this week long wake, the media, which for sure is liberal, admitted by them by the way, puts its spin on his presidentcy.

I am sure it does gripe knee jerkers to have to listen to this stuff all week, but the media is taking care of you like the kids that you are.
