Apple’s QuickTime vaults into close second in media player market share

“Apple Computer is beaming about the progress that QuickTime has been making compared to alternatives like Microsoft Windows Media Player and RealNetworks Real Player,” Michael Singer reports for InternetNews.com.

“A recent report on media player market share sales for client and enterprise applications by research firm Frost & Sullivan showed Apple moving into second position with 36.8 percent of the market, after running a distant third a few years ago. That puts Apple above Real, which controls 24.9 percent and not too far off from Microsoft and its share of 38.2 percent,” Singer reports. “Apple also issued a statement Thursday saying more than 250 million copies of QuickTime version 6 have been downloaded since its 2002 release.”

  1. NON FIRST POSTERS UNITE!!!

For real though, Quicktime is so much more pleasant to use then the competition. I’m not a Mac fanatic, but I know quality and workmanship when I see it, it means alot to me. That’s why I’m a Mac guy. Now, if quicktime could release an HD format (do they already?) I think that would be key in taking market share from MS.

  2. Too bad it doesn’t show on the Internet. Most websites I go to just have RealPlayer and WMP formats for downloading video. C’mon guys…the public has spoke! Get your act together!

  3. Quicktime is WAY ahead of the competition in the way it buffers and streams video. I’m on a T1 line at work, and even small WMP and Real clips play like distorted slide shows. Plus there’s the pause every three seconds where I see the “Re-buffering stream” message. On Quicktime, I just click play and BAM! High quality video and audio. Anyone who says they prefer WMP or Real needs to check their head for lobotomy scars.

P.S. One caveat on the Real player… it plays like a distorted slide show ONLY on the rare occurrence I don’t get a “missing plug-in” message. No matter how many times I re-install the P.O.S., I get that message. It’s now wiped off my Mac never to be installed again. If you put a million monkeys in front of a million computers, one will eventually code the Real Player application.

  4. QuickTime…?

    Nobody uses QT.

When was the last time you saw a QT feed other then on a Apple site.

Everyone in the real IT world uses MS WMP, why would you want to use any thing else. I mean the quality is great 90+% of all PC’s have it installed, it displays full screen (I think you still have to pay 30$ to watch a full screen QT movie!) most all of the modern servers are running on an MS OS.

…and the soon to be released Longhorn wow…
…with all the new features will be so neat…
…and I understand the color scheme will even be brighter…

  6. MS only got so big because its bundled, so Apple bundles it with iTunes and gains 2nd place in 2 years. When the China bundle deal kicks in, they may get closer to first

  7. To ALL Windows Trolls & M$ apologists.

1)Quicktime is the Audio & Video Engine of Mac OS X.

2)Quicktime or it’s components is the engine behind iTunes, iMovie, iPhoto, Final Cut Express, Final Cut Pro, Garage Band, etc.

3)Unlike WiMP (Windoze Media Player)- Quicktime runs well on PC’s and Macs. WiMP runs badly even on Windoze.

    4) If Micro$oftopoly has a better than 80% installed desktop share with only a 38.2% media share and Apple has less than 10% installed desktop share with a 36.8% media share, what does that tell you about WiMP? It’s WiMPy, it sucks, it’s Micr$oftopoly.

    5) With time Microsoft will be broken, just like the Soviet Union and Warsaw Pact. Quicktime is the superior technology and will prevail.

  8. wouldn’t it be more appropriate to say that apple owns 74.9 percent of the market, since microsuck basically copied Quicktime’s original code and pasted it into their player?

    baaaaaaaaaaaaaawhhahahhahahaahahhahahahah

    moo.

  9. “media player market share sales”

seems a wierd way to try to figure this out, since wmp is free and the basic versions of real and QT are as well. I doubt that the #’s are a real world representation of what is being used to watch vids and streams.

Also, the guy says “almost everyone has all three players on their computer”. If he is talking about his friends, fine. Most of my pc buddies have real because at some point a stream has demanded it, wmp because it’s there, and wouldn’t know QT if it bit them.

But as long as there are “research firms” there will be “research”.

Have a lovely weekend. Already started here, thanks for kicking the bucket Ron!

  10. “and the soon to be released Longhorn wow… “

    soon to be released?
    hahahahahahahahahahahaahhaahhaahahahaha!!!!!!
    2006 is soon?
How many times has it been bumped back?

    That’s funny.

  11. “QuickTime…?

    Nobody uses QT.”

Sputznik, How stupid are you? Didn’t the article just provide an example of how many people are using QT? Come on, if you are going to troll at least show some intelligence.

  12. “Nobody uses QT”

    Not true.

But QT is not nearly as prevalent on the web as it used to be.
What is scary is that now a lot more porn sites are WMP where most used to be QT (ehemmm- that an unscientific survey).
So, it was the billion$$$ porn industry that pushed QT to the top in the late 90s and now it looks like the Porn industry is moving to wmp.

If I refuse to use wmp- How will I get my Porn!?!?!

    Scary!!!!
