RUMOR: Apple to launch new Power Mac G5 models today, dual 2.6GHz at top-of-line

“Apple sources said the new models will have a top speed of 2.5GHz or 2.6GHz; the company is expected to offer dual-processor configurations of 2.5GHz, 2GHz, and 1.8GHz, as well as an entry-level single-processor 1.8GHz model. While other configurations may exist, those models are believed the represent the new product line,” Nick dePlume reports for Think Secret.

“Apple will reportedly include an ATI Radeon 9600 XT graphics card in the highest-end configuration and an NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 Ultra in the other models,” dePlume reports. “A source said that the company’s plans called for an announcement of the long-awaited G5 refresh on Tuesday, June 8, but stressed that announcement dates for speed bumps could easily be shifted to a later date in the week; other indicators suggested that may indeed be the case.”

dePlume reports on the possiblities of quad G5 Power Macs, new displays and more here.

  1. that’s total bogus to me.

They will be bringing back a model that was removed from the lineup! (single 1.8)

they will put the same graphic cards in there that were in the lineup for 1 year!

and they will still sell the current lineup (all 3 models) with a discount, but what’s the difference between the old and new lineup?

doesn’t make any sense, the only new model would be the 2.5, and don’t tell me they can’t make any models between 2.5 and 2.0..

apple will surprise us, at least not with specs like this!

  2. Certain things just do make sense with this story, we were told a 3.0ghz CPU before the end of summer… Also Why would it be relesaed today instead of at WWDC2004?

  3. Apple has to do something to Power Mac line soon. Everybody waits for the new products and that waiting is not good for business. Apple needs everybody to replace their orders ASAP. I am not going to buy new machines before I see the new products. I also would need a quad PM.

I am still betting WWDC. It is only few weeks to go.
Then again it is WWDC so the attention will be on the new cat more than on new hardware.

  4. Why would they introduce AirPort Express one day and PowerMac G5s the next? The first product is the focus of attention for now and at least a few more days.

The dual 1.8, 2.0 and 2.5 numbers do not seem right. The current G5s differ by 0.2 GHz between each configuration and the next. Unless the high-end PowerMac will use a different model processor to that used by the other models, I do not think the rumoured configurations are accurate.

  5. With iTunes Europe the 15th, AirTunes/Airport Express Yesterday, and if they release the PM G5 updates before the WWDC, SJ must be keeping somthing uterly GIGANTIC under his hat for WWDC. Tiger is nice, but its not a huge announcment. SJ doesnt speak just for a “known” product demo, there is somthing huge coming, mark my words.

  6. i second that Buffy… steve jobs is holding out on some thing big… and tiger isnt it… i bet apple will release the new g5 updates and then show off the new displays at wwdc. I mean a 30 inch display would be so cool… and cost $$bling$$, $$bling$$

  7. This is coming from Thinksecret, and they’re one of the better Mac-rumor outfits that I’ve found. They correctly predicted the 3G iPod would have touch sensitive buttons that were not on in the immediate vicinity of the scroll wheel, and did so at least a month before the 3G was actually released. Thinksecret is also usually correct with model release dates and specs, but this seems a little shakier than most – making special note that the date could be subject to change.

  8. If Jobs sais 3 GHz in a year he will come with a 3 GHz than he comes with a 3 GHz, so this rumor is fake, they even don’t know if the top-model is dual 2.5 or 2.6 GHz. 1.8 GHz single is to slow if they introduce a 2.5 or 2.6 GHz model. If Jobs comes with new G5’s they have the following configurations i think: Dual 3 GHz, Dual 2.6 GHz and Single 2.2! I never heart about a Radeon 9600 XT only a 9800 XT. The 9800 Pro is faster than a 9600 XT I think.
Mostly Think Secret knows it right, but this looks very fake.

  9. There is NOTHING wrong with the current G5 lineup. I have a 1.8 G5 and it smokes the Xeon & P4 PC’s we have at work running XP & Win 2000. After years of hearing abouth the Megahertz myth it seems as if many have a bad case of CPU envy.

  10. i’d hardly think that the wwdc audience of developers is the appropriate audience to unveil an expensive new 30″ monitor, assuming such a thing exists. makes more sense to unveil the powermac upgrades then, or at least together with the new displays, since powermacs and displays basically go together.

but who am i to brandish logic in the face of enthusiastic rumors? the rumors are so much cooler, and therefore must be true.

oh yes, and steve jobs must be just dying to undermine the message of the next major upgrade to os x, which is what the developers have paid good money to go and learn about, by releasing apple’s supercool, supersecret new product at wwdc!

    sheesh…

  11. Hey folks, this is what’s coming. Just watch.

up to a 2.5 or 2.6 GHz dual today, and at WWDC either the long-awaited dual 3GHz …. or … the rumored QUAD G5. And a wireless iPod that works with the Airport Express. And of course the G5 iMacs. G5 powerbooks will have to wait till Xmas.

  12. ah…it gets better…apple is going to announce 2.6ghz dp powermacs today, and then in just over two weeks, after customers have ordered theirs, piss them off by announcing further machines that are just 0.4ghz faster. or maybe even quad-processor machines! great!

ok…that’s me out of these forums…
