Adobe releases ‘Adjusted Refresh plug-in’ to improve Photoshop CS preview performance

Adobe has released their “Adjusted Refresh plug-in” in order to help increase the preview performance of Adobe Photoshop CS explaining that, “the Adjusted Refresh plug-in addresses the time it takes to visually preview some filter updates in Photoshop CS. This plug-in reduces the size of the Photoshop image tiles. This causes the display to redraw in smaller pieces, reducing the time it takes to see the updated preview. The Adjusted Refresh plug-in will also reduce the initial scratch disk usage after you launch Photoshop. Note that overall performance may be reduced for users with multiple processors or more than 1GB of RAM.”

  1. “Note that overall performance may be reduced for users with multiple processors or more than 1GB of RAM.”

So the more resources you have the slower it works?

    That does not make sense.

  2. Transputer operating system. The ability to use 17 processers at once. Can U tell me when APPLE will let U ADD AS MANY PROCESSERS as U want, by putting then in the PCI slots? Again BOTH ATARI AND COMMODORE had system’s in the work’s 12 YEAR’S AGO that COULD DO THAT. THAT’s BETTER THAN ANYTHING FROM APPLE OR MICROSOFT!! Now is OSX BETTER THAN THAT? NO!!! RESPONSE please. PLUG THIS IN.
Hey sys operator: How ‘Bout a article?

  3. 10.3.4 takes a BIG performance hit, Accelerate Your Mac reports UT2004 players have to disable their sound to get back to the same frame rate as on 10.3.3

Sure Safari redraw is faster, I have the absolute fastest Mac possible, Dual 2 Ghz, striped pair of 10,000 RPM Raptors, 8 GB RAM, ATI 9800 Special Edition.

I noticed a 40% AltiVec and other CPU hits between 10.3.3 and 10.3.4

This is a serious hit!!! Photoshop CS takes a big hit from 7.01 by itself!!!

When Adobe has to issue a “plug-in” to help Mac OS X redraw faster, you know we got problems.

On top of that Photoshop filtersstill use only one processor on a dual machine.

So PC’s are actually getting things done in Photoshop faster than my fastest Mac. Even Adobe is recommending fucking PC’s over Mac’s.

I don’t appreciate having the fastest Mac possible and having a PC beat my Photoshop tests.

    This is complete BULLSHIT!!!

One good thing to note, is that I am more than three times as productive as my PC counterparts. Because of multiple processors, multitasking and reliability.

Damm I need a watercooled Dual 3 Ghz G5 monster to whip these PC coworkers ass!!

  4. B.C., while I feel your pain I don’t share it. I don’t have a Dual 2 Gig G5 to make a direct comparison with your info. Here are some observations from my perspective.

PS CS is about 50% faster than PS 7 using 10.3.4,10.3.3, or 10.2.8.

I had no speed hit going from 10.3.3 to 10.3.4.

My tests were done running actions on 120MB to 150 MB files.

As you probably know G5’s don’t really cook till you get about 2 Gigs of RAM in them and allocate at least 1 Gig of that RAM in the PS preferences. If you have that amount of RAM then I’m puzzled because I haven’t heard of similar issues with other G5 owners.

My tests were run on a Dual 1.33 GHz G4 with 1.5 Gigs of RAM. I do a lot of photoshop work and this machine cuts through it very nicely.

With that being said, I’m sure the whole Mac community is looking forward to announcements of some serious upgrades to the PowerMac G5s at the WWDC this month.

  5. Comparing the same set of actions on the same files on both platforms shows the Dual 2 Ghz G5 using only one processor in Photoshop.

The PC’s are beating my same results because they may have only one chip, but it’s faster. Plus they get faster redraw.

As a 2 Ghz G5 chip is about equal to a 2.6 Ghz P IV in Photoshop.

So I’m getting beat by 3 Ghz P IV chips and above, and of course AMD chips too.

The G5 is only fast if applications can take advantage of two processors, since only some things can be threaded on the other processor, apparently running a series of filters in Photoshop you can’t do this, one has to finish before the other starts.

So the Dual G5 may be the fastest box, but only if a process can be threaded to run across both processors equally. The G5 is not a dual-core machine using parallel processing. (Like a striped aka RAID O set of drives, both working together equally for maximum speed)

If someone made a computer with 2 3.4 Ghz P IV chips and a OS that delegated some processes to the other chip, that’s basically what a PowerMac G5 is.

On a chip by chip basis the 2 Ghz is equal to a 2.6-3 Ghz P IV depending on the application and OS changes.

Again I still love using my Mac, and can beat PC based UT2004 counterparts because UT2004 throws the sound on the other processor.

But the game itself only runs on one processor. So folks who have only a single chip PowerMac G5 are turning off their sound to keep their frame rates up.

The Dual 2 Ghz G5 should be more accurately called the World’s Most Productive, provided you have something else you can do while waiting for Photoshop to render.

Else the PC folks are kicking our asses.

    And that’s the awful truth

  6. <i>“I had no speed hit going from 10.3.3 to 10.3.4.”<b><i>

Guess you haven’t been running benchmarks on every update and configeration like I have.

Trust me there is a <b>big Avitec hit with 10.3.4, you may not notice it, but running benchmarks before and after will show you the results.

  7. “I had no speed hit going from 10.3.3 to 10.3.4”

Guess you haven’t been running benchmarks on every update and configeration like I have.

Trust me there is a BIG Avitec hit with 10.3.4, you may not notice it, but running bencharks before and after will show you the results.

  8. I have a Dual G5 2ghz 2gb Ram and have noticed no slowdown between point updates, I have Run PS bench on the machine after each update no slowdown.
Sure there was a slight slowdown upgrading to CS particularly in the browser, but it’s not that bad and has effected my PCs as well.

I note one thing from your posts:
“I don’t appreciate having the fastest Mac possible and having a PC beat my Photoshop *TESTS*”.

    Then 2 lines later

“One good thing to note, is that I am more than three times as productive as my PC counterparts”

Does that mean they need 3 times faster machines to be a productive?
    Err no,
In other words it’s the USER not the machine that does the work

  9. “Trust me there is a BIG Avitec hit with 10.3.4, you may not notice it,

This cannot be true as the OS doesn’t use altivec.

The altivec SIMD engine is onboard the chip and is accessed directly by the application (in PSCS check you plug-ins)
I think your just trolling here

  10. All I have to say is run the benchmarks that test your whole system and prove me fucking wrong.

But oh! you have already updated to 10.3.4 and can’t go back.

    Oh well, humbug.

Like maybe the faster screen redraw (like in Safari) is using Avitec now?

This could account for the slower CPU benchmarks.

    Oh well. Fuck it.

  11. “All I have to say is run the benchmarks that test your whole system and prove me fucking wrong”.

    Have done and you are.

“Like maybe the faster screen redraw (like in Safari) is using Avitec now”?

Altivec is a set of 128 instructions for steaming media and has nothing to do with screen re-draws…thats quartz extreme
Safari doesn’t use Altivec ….why would it?

Also you claim to have a G5 with an internal raid 0…just how do you boot off that?
seeing as you can’t boot (disk utility can’t make your startup disk part of a raid)

you are just trolling here! and not very well

  12. “Comparing the same set of actions on the same files on both platforms shows the Dual 2 Ghz G5 using only one processor in Photoshop”.

Then it’s a PS problem, you may like to note that dual CPUs are only utilized by certain filters both in the Win and Mac versions of photoshop

“The PC’s are beating my same results because they may have only one chip, but it’s faster. Plus they get faster redraw”.

If the PC’s are faster thats fine but 2 CPUs are not utilized by PS all the time.
Also PCs suffer from hugely slow redraws as PS uses the CPU Totally with a Mac PS uses the GPU (with quartz)

“provided you have something else you can do while waiting for Photoshop to render”.

err??? you haven’t actually used PS then? how do you have to wait for a “Render”

  13. You have to wait for a render on large files, try a 3 GB and a series of filter actions on both platforms. Like we have. It can take up to a minute on a Dual 2 Gh G5 and as little as 38 seconds on a P IV 3.4 Ghz.

Yes there is a Alvitec performance loss on 10.3.4 according to X-Bench, why is beyond us. Ask Barefeats or Accelerate your Mac for confirmation.

And yes you can make a RAID O a boot drive, ever hear of Carbon Copy Cloner?

Still think I’m a windows troll?

  14. “Still think I’m a windows troll”

    Yep without a doubt!

Or you’re just not very tech savvy with Apples

I process large files and my G5 smacks my dual Xeon Totally.
Screen redraws on windows is a joke, you can actually see the blocks of the image being drawn!

And yes I’ve got carbon copy cloner it came with my Pod, but OSX doesn’t support Raid 0 on a boot volume you have to put the OS on an external and raid the two internal as Apple only put two internals in a G5 case.

  15. Here’s the numbers from X-Bench:

    Test, Before 10.3.4, After 10.3.4

    GDC Loop, 4.62 Mops/sec, 4.03 Mops/sec

    Floating Point Basic, 1.16 Gflops/sec, 742.92 Mflops/sec!!!

    AltiVec Basic, 3.89 Gflop/sec, 2.61 Gflop/sec!!!!

    vecLib FFT, 3.43 Gflop/sec, 2.16 Gflop/sec!!!!

    Floating Point Library, 16.61 Mops/sec, 13.24 Mops/sec!!!!

    I REST MY CASE

  16. By the way Mac OS X does support a boot drive on a RAID volume, perhaps not on your particular Mac, but the G5 it does.

Carbon Copy Cloner doesn’t come on a iPod either.

It’s a third party freeware. Of course your testing me.

But I have a right to bitch, 10.3.4 is a slow pig, Mac OS X is insecure, Photoshop still isn’t faster than a PC.

  17. Doesn’t mean I would switch to a piece of shit PC, but Apple better get it’s frigging act together about these issues.

I’m not a happy Mac owner any longer, and for good reason.
