Star-studded list of tech execs to endorse President Bush for another term

“A star-studded list of technology executives on Wednesday will endorse President Bush for another term, saying they believe the Republican candidate’s positions are a better choice for the high-tech industry. The endorsement at a Seattle event by the group of executives, including Dell Chairman Michael Dell, Teledesic Chairman Craig McCaw, and Microsoft Executive Vice President Bob Herbold, represents the latest round of jockeying between Republicans and Democrats over which presidential candidate can claim the most tech-friendly stance,” Declan McCullagh reports for CNET News.com.

“The event coincides with the release of a short Web video clip, titled “Innovators,” that features tech leaders touting Bush. The video clip also includes eBay CEO Meg Whitman, Barksdale Management CEO Jim Barksdale and Autodesk Chairman Carol Bartz,” McCullagh reports. “‘After several tough years, tech is bouncing back,” Bartz says in the video. “This is due in no small measure to this administration’s pro-growth policies.’ Cisco Systems CEO John Chambers adds that Bush ‘understands the key high-tech issues,’ such as how best to deploy broadband connections.”

“Like Bush, Democratic candidate John Kerry has made outreach attempts in Silicon Valley, which have included landing Apple Computer CEO Steve Jobs as an informal adviser,” McCullagh reports. “But Kerry’s views run the risk of alienating some technology executives. He has told the AFL-CIO that he is critical of ‘excessive’ executive compensation and added that ‘I also support expensing stock options.’ Bush, on the other hand, has in the past said he supports the current mechanism of expensing stock options.”

  1. Looking at the names on that list, are you really surprised they support Bush?

And do you think their endorsement will swing a single vote to Bush that he wasn’t going to get anyway?

  2. I don’t have a problem with the article. I do have a problem with the companies and people supporting the idiot in the white house and his tech friendly (solely having to do with money and making more of it) policies.

You have got to be kidding.

this is the idiot that doesn’t read newspapers and have people explain the “truth” daily he best “‘understands the key high-tech issues” and the example they give is that he happened to make a speech about everybody having broadband. Puh-lease.

  3. And I have a problem with Steve Jobs using his Reality Distortion Field to attempt to make Kerry seem like someone who’s actually qualfied to be President.

Thank goodness, there are some things that even Steve isn’t capable of.

  4. What would be suprising is a guy running a company that makes him more than $200,000 a year who would NOT support Bush. If someone like that can actually look past his own tax break and realize that this country would be more healthy if it had anyone but GW in office, then I would be impressed. Oh wait, Steve Jobs fits that description…

  5. Now that the floodgates are open…

I have to say this is probably one of very few times I’ll actually agree with a group that includes Michael Dell and Microsoft and completely disagree with Steve Jobs. I can’t support “the idiot” democratic candidate who’s definition of the “truth” changes depending on which way the wind is blowing at the moment…

  6. Citizen X, John Kerry isn’t called Mr. Flip Flop for nothing…Bush is all over Kerry on his issues. Kerry is such a boneheaded politician.

The man’s plan for defending this country is to negotitate with the terrorists. What the hell kind of plan is that?!?

    Who’s the idiot now?

  7. – Highest gas prices ever…
    – More outsourcing for tech companies (less jobs for Americans)
    – Easier to hire Mexicans for dirt cheap wages
    – Industry allowed to keep polluting the environment at break neck speeds
    – Biggest Deficit increase i n American history (you think this is gonna come back and bite us in the ass?)

I can see why some head honcho who is making tons of cash would want to vote for GW, but I see no reason why anyone who makes less than say $200,000 would want to vote for him…

  8. I don’t see how this relates to Apple. It’s more related to tech heavyweights, which happens to include Mr. Jobs.

Anyway, I can’t wait until election year is over so we can concentrate on Apple stuff and taking down Microsoft, instead of beating up on eachother.

MDN, can you promise not to put up any politics-related stuff unless it’s really important during non-president election years? It would be nice to have 3 years off from presidential politics…

  9. Honestly, can you really argue that Kerry is any more unqualified to hold the office of the President than Dubya was 4 years ago?

and being a supposed “flip-flopper” isn’t necessarily bad. Perhaps Bush could benefit from some flip-flopping of his own by seeing the errors in his own past judgments and making adjustments.

  10. Chomper- While Kerry sucks as well, If you beleive that his position is to negotiate with terrorists, you are braindead. Please jump off the closest bridge and make your contribution to the U.S. genetic pool.

  11. Nice arguments you make Chomper. Real intelligent. Personally I think they are both disgusting choices for president so we can put the partisanism aside.

To pretend that bushes tech policy isn’t driven by lobbiest and special interest is naive.

Ultimately their support for bush or kerry means nothing as far as votes go but money matters and it only shows where the money is going. I guess this is the money that will bring “broadband” to all. I am glad that they are looking out for my interest.

  12. I agree. Bush needs to understand that just because he makes a decision, it isn’t the best one. And he two flip flops on issues: allowing Rice to testify, creation of homeland security, etc.

Lets get back to talking about what really matters, Apple Computer.

  13. I am a very big fan of Steve Jobs, who I consider to be a conservative.

    1. He has fought terrorist viruses by not allowing them to reach our virtual borders.

    2. When an operating system and software title meet, they should take responsibility for their actions. Say NO to software aborting.

    3. And last, Steve doesn’t make promises that he can’t keep. When he hosts a keynote speech, he only shows results.

    iVote for Bush.

  14. You’re the idiot chomper if you believe for one nanosecond that another term of Bush will be nothing short of a disaster for this country. While I’m no fan of Kerry, please we have to rid ourselves of this administration.

It has lied and cheated throughout its whole term – Bush and his entire cabinet should be impeached. The litany of crimes gets longer by the day – from invading two sovereign states, to lying about WMDs in Iraq, misappropriating Congress-approved money for his secret war plans, outting a serving CIA covert officer in spite and malice, covertly approving interrogation techniques that contravene the Geneva Conventions.

Shit… this government is shameless and should be dumped as soon as possible.

All you have to do is watch GWB’s current commercials to see his perception of honesty. “Let’s tell everyone half-truths and hope they buy it.” Isn’t that the same thing that got us into his holy war?
