  1. OS X is in major trouble…

Simple html links can now be used to remove the contents of your home directory.

An onload script can be used to remove the contents of your home directory.

All with out any feedback from the user.

    http://bronosky.com/pub/AppleScript.htm

THIS LINK WILL EXPLOIT HELP TO RUN A SCRIPS TO…?

That just runs a harmless script (/usr/bin/du; exit) which scrolls a bunch of text and looks scary, but it could easily have been a script to wipe your home directory.

HELP ANYONE PAYING ATTENTION AT THE iPod factory !

  2. I clicked on your f… link and it opened help and terminal and stuff started flying by. I closed it. If you f.. up my system, I’m going to be pissed and track you a… down like a dog.

  3. Apparently the thing relies on having Safari preference set to “Open files upon download” and downloading on the desktop as destination.
Set a download folder and uncheck the Safari option and be wary of untrusted sources and links re-directions.

People are out to *demonstrate* than Windows is more secure than OS X.

  4. FAO SOS:

IF YOUR SO MUCH INTO ‘TRYING’ TO PROVE THAT OS X IS LESS SECURE THAN WINDOOOOOOOWWWWWWZZZZZZ THEN FUCK OFF TO SOME PC WEENIES SITE AND LEAVE THE ELITE OF THE COMPUTER WORLD ALONE!

Windooooowwwwwzzzzzz is SO secure (NOT) – OF COURSE IT IS…

…ITS ONLY GOT OVER 2,000 LIVE AND ACTIVE VIRUS’S FLYING AROUND ON IT!

  5. Back on topic….

I hope the fact that the contest ends right before WWDC is some type of sign that we will see Keynote 2.0 at the end of June.

I know that may be a stretch, but I really want the next version of Keynote. Of course, it may also be because new displays are coming on the 28th, and this way Apple gives you and older version.

Who knows, but here’s to hoping

  6. Jeez people, grow up, is everyone posting here 14 years old??

The security hole is real and gaping wide, although the threat is probably minimal, anyone could set up a page that runs “rm -rf ~” (which would wipe your entire home directory, so don’t do it) or similar malicious code.

Anyway, as for the original topic, I’m hoping this is a sign for something, anything, as Keynote Lover mentioned, possibly Keynote 2.0. I’m thinking maybe they’ll have Keynote presentation support in these new rumored color video iPods, that would be neat.

  7. Favorite passion? Can anyone here create a killer presentation on topics other than related to Apple? Post your topic and let’s see if it makes the keynote.

  8. Turning off Safari’s “Open Safe files upon downloading” does NOT, stop the exploit.

Move your Help Viewer in System/Library/CoreServces onto a cd or other removeable media off your computer.

Move it back before applying the patch that Apple is currently working on.

Without Help Viewer the exploit can’t work.

Now we know how a Winblows user feels everyday.

It’s been fun, Apple will have a patch out shortly.

  9. Better yet have a “option bootable” clone to go at a moments notice. You never know when a head crash or exploit will wipe you out.

Use Carbon Copy Cloner and make daily backups of your files.

  10. Hey, Windows troll or not, SOS has alerted us to a potential disaster. BTW, nowhere does he ever claim than he is a Windows user, or otherwise claim the OS X is less secure than Windows. He merely alerted us to a troubling situation. Don’t kill the messenger. Don’t get mad at him for doing us a service.

  11. I’m with Not Good and others:

SOS has bothered to do some research and gone to a lot of work to demonstrate the danger, and deserves kudos for his efforts rather than brickbats.

What we need to do is be careful what we click on until Apple issue a security update.
