Sony looks beyond Microsoft Windows for future Vaio devices’ operating systems

“Unveiling Sony Corp.’s new computer product lineup here this week, Keiji Kimura, president of Sony’s IT & Mobile Solutions Network Co., defined a new strategy for Sony’s computer business as ‘Vaio beyond PC.’ Kimura said Sony is evolving its Vaio-branded computer platform into a number of networked audio and video products. Significantly, Vaio operating systems will no longer be limited to Microsoft Corp.’s Windows XP,” Junko Yoshida reports for EE Times.

“Vaio Pocket, Sony’s new portable audio player will use Sony’s proprietary operating system. The same is apparently true of the video version of a prototype pocket device Sony demonstrated here,” Yoshida reports. “Kiumra said Sony has no plans to switch its Vaio platform from Windows XP to Linux any time soon. But he added that Linux is a candidate for a number of small but powerful Vaio-based devices.”

“Kimura said Sony will stick with Windows XP for the time being because it is a strong platform with the largest installed base. But for anything that goes ‘beyond PC,’ Sony doesn’t see Microsoft helping Sony differentiate its Vaio products from consumer devices. ‘Other than XP,’ said Kimura, “Microsoft has failed in its every attempt, including Windows CE and .NET initiatives” to extend the Windows platform into the consumer market. ‘We don’t see any of those new initiatives [becoming] a major success,'” Yoshida reports.

MacDailyNews Take: Boy, wouldn’t Apple’s Mac OS X help Sony differentiate Vaio personal computers from the rest of the Wintel dreck?

  1. Yeah, but every Sony laptop and PC is crap compared to Macs. They may look good, but inside they are cheap parts, they are poor compromises, and they are poorly thought out. Compared to Macs. I’ve fixed plenty of them. They are no better than any other PC laptop and their Desktops are considerably worse.

I wouldn’t want to embarras OS X by going on Sony Vaios.

  2. >I wouldn’t want to embarras OS X by going on Sony Vaios.

Uhhhhh wha? Embarrass an Operating System?

    —–

If Apple were to open up to Giant Sony Corp, it would gain some big market share points. Even small points mean big sales increases for Apple, in that software and service sales will increase as well.

But that’s probably too “outside” at the moment. What does Sony have to gain? Maybe a lot, maybe little. Sony has a reputation to worry about as well and Apple could very well play out to be computers’ “BetaMax”.

I for one would love to see Apple take on some key partners. HP-branded Mac? Sony V-Mac? IBM-Mac?

  4. I don’t see a huge problem with Apple approved IBM or Sony badged machines. They’d have to pretty much the same machines in a modified case, and Apple would have to still make a little money from each sale.

Might be a good move. But how many people buying a Mca would want something that wasn’t made by Apple ?

  5. “Sony are abandoning industry standard Windows software and the industry standard superior WMA format. Their business model for control of the entire hardware and software as an integrated platform has no future and belongs to the 1950s not the 21st century. They are going to be a footnote in history by the end of the decade, when the entire world will be running Longhorn on Dell.”

    MESSAGE FOR DAVE H:

The microsoft monopoly will fail eventually.

Every monopoly has fallen – it’s just a matter of time.

Eventually everyone will get sick to death of constant virus attacks and security updates and people and businesses will look for alternatives en mass.

The last virus – sassers, is a case in point: Did you know that hospital systems failed because of this? And that people died in hospitals because of this virus? Or that the whole UK coastguard computer system went down and that this potentially could have killed a lot of people swimming in the sea who got into trouble and needed help.

Beleive me – alot of very important people are seriously questioning using just windows… and are looking at alternatives for the future survival of their business!

The FBI are now using Macs, Federal Xpress are migrating to Macs, the film industry mostly uses macs, the creative industries use macs, amongst many many others too…

The Microsoft empire cannot last forever, nothing does even if you have a monopoly. There is always someone coming up who will create something that is better – If I was bill gates I would be worried about all the teenagers with computers in their rooms because one of these guys is going to create something that no one has ever thought of before and it will totally turn the computer industry on it’s head.. and in doing so destroy any monopoly.

    …the clock is ticking bill…

…use your time left on this planet wisely (or course with bill’s billions there is still one thing he cannot change or buy… and that is imortallity. At some point bill gate will die, and when he does his monopoly will go too).

  6. Do not forget!

    George Bush = Saddam Hussein
Steal Oil and torture/rape/kill people as much as you can.

George Bush and Ariel Sharon are War criminals:

A war crime is a punishable offense, under international law
International law deals with the relationships between states, or between persons or entities in different states. It sub-divides into “public international law”, and “private international law”. When used without an adjective, “international law” generally refers to “public international law”, and this article concentrates on that meaning.

    http://encyclopedia.thefreedictionary.com/war crime

USA and Israel are the only “western countries” with Russia that do not respect THE International LAW!

    Freedom indeed!

    USA and Israel allow:
    torture/abuse/kill people without justice!

    Freedom indeed!

  7. Not much Apple computer news anymore…no new computers for months…no reason to visit the Apple-type websites…
    too bad.
Even “Finland guy” above is flipping out and having to write non-Mac info….

  8. Yes… it is boring…
    Americans missed it again.
    Stupidity+Arrogance=US Military

Every time when I see no news (iTunes/AAC/Mac vs. PC/Enderle what ever/Windows for ever) here in MDN I include to my comments real facts of life like:
George Bush is a WAR CRIMINAL

  9. Hmmmmmm….i knew we should have annexed Finland when we had the chance…

Female Moose + Guy from Finland in a sauna = Finland Military.

    Remember Finlandization.
    We do.

    -Guy from former USSR

  10. The guy from Finland is right about George Dubya.

He also rigged the election, so technically he is not actually The President. His baby brother Jeb Bush made sure that after about 3 recounts he won.

It’s amazing how three recounts produce 3 different results, but as soon as George Dubya wins it’s declared vaild.

    One word: fix

  11. They don’t need to necessarily show the OS per se, but they need to get away from just showing what the box looks like. No one buys a computer for what the box looks like, especially current PC users, most of whom sit their box under the desk. I think they need to run a series of ads addressing common misconceptions about the Mac like that they’re expensive (an ad for the eMac with a price would be great), lack of software (run quickly through the thousands of titles available on the Mac lingering on the important ones like MS Office). Maybe they could create a character, a villain who looks eerily like a certain billionaire in Seattle, who says “There’s no software available for the Mac!” and then thousands of software boxes bury him. He could be featured in several ads each killing a common misconception.

I don’t know, anything other than spinning hardware on a white bkg. They look great but they don’t work. They need to focus on what you can do with it as opposed to what they look like. I produce TV commercials for a living. I’d LOVE to have a crack at it. I don’t know who is behind their marketing ideas, someone at Apple or Chiat/Day but they need a fresh start.

  12. One Guy from Finland + genital rash = Annoying Political Posts

Spare us and buy a cream already if you need something to do to take your mind off that burning itch.

  13. Tired of seeing this piece of ideology saying “show me a 30 second piece” about the usefulness of the OS. Gee, a “how do you do it?” campaign would be great. Get the “cub reporter” going into an office of people using Macs and ask them.
Shot of reporter: How do you sort through your windows?
Shot of screen: I use Apple’s expos.
Shot of reporter: How do you set up a USB/Firewire device.
Shot of gal: I plug it in (showing the drive appear on desktop).
Shot of reporter: How do you organize your files?
Shot of screen: I use colored folders and custom icons.
Shot of reporter: How do you control viruses.
Shot of screen: Viruses? Don’t know about that, but keeping your system up to date is easy (show system update).

You get the picture. You can mix and match to make a variety of commercials.

That is one idea, and darn it, it can be done and should be done.

  14. Hey Findlander, how you doing. You forgot to mention the newest terrorist kid on the block, the New Yorker, publishing photos of Iraqi detainees definite violation of Geneva convention. Publishing those photos and distribution them around the world is just another demonstration of a global act of terror and dehumanisation, courtesy of the United Hates media.

So how is your part of the free world?

  15. Please ignore the Finlander guy. He is a conservative plant, posting idiotic, jr. high level drivel designed to make all of us good liberals look like brainless dolts. We are not really that stupid.

I have said it before and I’ll say it again, Iraq had WMDs along and that is why some were found just today.

So Bush may have been right all along on this but so was I.

    John Theresa Heinz Kerry

  16. As if sony’s OS is any better..Its even MORE Proprietary than anything else out there…Clie` anyone?
I would prefer OS X or even M$ Pocket 2003 over sony any day…good luck with your 9 Track OS

  17. “Microsoft has failed in its every attempt, including Windows CE and .NET initiatives” to extend the Windows platform into the consumer market. ‘We don’t see any of those new initiatives [becoming] a major success,'”

What is this guy smoking? Crack?
Last time I checked. The .Not has actually been gaining some Traction….
