RUMOR: Apple preps new 90-nm Power Mac G5 computers

“Apple Computer, once again, is said to be readying a set of revisions to its Power Mac G5 product line that are expected to sport IBM’s new 90-nanometer PowerPC G5 processor and hit stores this spring,” Katie Marsal reports for AppleInsider. “…Apple has just recently received a full two shipments of the 90-nm cards at its Cupertino location and has successfully deployed several new test units of the Power Macs to partners close to company.”

Marsal reports, “According to the source, all of the test models were equipped with dual processors ranging in speeds from 2.2GHz to 2.6GHz. The source, however, notes that there is no indication that configurations of the test units represent final specs for Power Macs that would be sent to production.”

“Apple last updated its professional line of Power Macs in June of 2003, but applied a slight configuration shift in November to better cater to demand. During the June introduction, Apple CEO Steve Jobs claimed that Power Mac G5 speeds would reach 3GHz ‘by next summer,’ a promise that he repeated in September at Apple Expo Paris,” Marsal reports.

  1. I am very satisfied with my Dual 2 G5. Just for selfish reasons, I am glad that my machine wasn’t outstepped within 6 months..

My machine is still ontop, but not for very much longer!

  2. Yes! I will be ordering the step below the top of the line. Good enough performance for the price. Add some memory and the best video card and I will have a bitchin’ system!

I’m guessing I will be getting a 2.4 or so if the 2.6 is the top of the line. If the 3.0 comes out, I’ll get the 2.8 or 2.6. Whatever, as long as it’s dual proc.

  3. My single 1.8 g5 is still a great workstation. I think a 10k rpm drive for my audio files is the only upgrade I need, already added a gig of Ram. Cash is the blood, in bleeding edge. haha.

  4. I’m very envious and if you don’t knock it off I’m going to get very mad!! If I could afford the WWDC, I’d go in a heartbeat. Good luck, One Man, don’t take any wooden euros.

  5. Taking a contract out on “One Guy from Finland”. If anyone sees him, before or at the WWDC, pelt him with your extra Dell Resource Kit CDs, or old versions of Win98SE or Win2k. Beem him in the head. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />) It’s so sad that you actually need to program to when a scholarship to the WWDC. One of these days man, I’ll find a client that I can persuade into cover the cost.

  6. apple needs to start commercials that tell what the machine can do not people dancing or just showing how good it looks. people dancing may sell an ipod just fine but odds are people wont look at a 2000+ dollar computer the same way.

  7. I don’t know about you guys but I’m annoyed by the “University of Phoenix online” ad which re-direct some of the pages to some annoying crap.
MDN, I don’t know if this is good for this site but such an ad makes your site look cheap and annoying.
    Peace

  8. No Powerbook G5’s yet, they just got updated with new G4 chips.

G5 chip is still a hot bugger, they are trying a new liquid cooling method which will allow them to place two cpu’s on the logic board.

First portable workstation. You don’t know me. MDN.

  9. When I was ready for a dual G5 I was told they generated enough heat to warm up a room. I decided to wait for the 90-nm. Could someone confirm this? If it isn’t true there might be few good deals when the new machines are released.

  10. Drool, slobber… bleah! A dual G5 and a G5 iMac plus Airport, laserprinter, another LaCie bigdrive… but where’smy metal CinemaScreen? — I want to sell my original. Gimme, gimme, gimme. Wait a minute: Tiger, MacFixit reports… will I make it before the end of June? And what about my tabletop brick (iTop) iPod?

  11. I’ve been upgrading my Mac systems for the past 10 years regularly, and for the first time, I really don’t think I have any need whatsoever for a faster computer than my Dual 2Ghz. I mean this thing is friggin fast. Looks like I’m gonna have to figure out some other reason to convince my brain that it’s ok to get the latest and greatest…

  12. I’ll stick to my Dual G5.
Does anyone know if the CPUs in these units are upgradable? Not that’d I’ve come anywhere near giving this machine a workout, but it would be nice to know that I have the option of putting in a couple of Dual 3ghz cpus if I were so inclined.

  13. “When I was ready for a dual G5 I was told they generated enough heat to warm up a room.” – tango

The dual-1.8 G5 that I’ve worked with runs ultra-cool and ultra-quiet – probably because of the multi-zone cooling system Apple developed for it. The power consumption is also lower than any of my noisy Wintel servers, so from that perspective it’s great, too. But compared to the 970FX, it’s a hog.
