OWC reduces prices on Mercury Extreme G4 processor upgrades up to 10 percent

Other World Computing (OWC) today announced that it has reduced prices by as much as 10 percent on its Mercury Extreme line of G4 processor upgrades for Apple Macintosh computers.

A simple replacement upgrade for increasing the performance of Power Mac G4 models, the Mercury Extreme G4 line features Tantalum-dipped components and an ultra-quiet custom cooling system with a pre-attached heat-sink and fan in order to maximize the reliability and longevity of the upgrade.

The new prices, effective immediately and available at http://www.macsales.com/extreme, are as follows:
* OWC Mercury Extreme G4/867-933MHz – $249.99 (was $279.99)
* OWC Mercury Extreme G4/867MHz-1.0GHz – $269.99 (was $299.99)
* OWC Mercury Extreme G4/1.0-1.1GHz – $299.99 (was $329.99)
* OWC Mercury Extreme G4/1.25-1.33GHz – $389.99 (was $399.99)
* OWC Mercury Extreme G4/1.25-1.4GHz – $419.99 (was $449.99)
* OWC Mercury Extreme G4/1.4-1.467GHz – $479.99 (was $499.99)

“Today’s operating systems and applications can certainly benefit from a faster processor, and some may even require something better than many older Power Mac G4 models came from the factory with,” said Larry O’Connor, president of OWC in the press release. “Our OWC Mercury Extreme G4 line offers an extremely economical way to get the most from your current Apple Macintosh computer compared to the cost of starting over with a new machine. With these latest price drops our easy-to-install, plug-and-play upgrades are more affordable than ever. Also, by upgrading not only do the applications you already have run faster, but you can now purchase and use the latest software that often requires faster processor speeds just to be functional. Upgrading with a Mercury Extreme is just like getting a new computer, but for a lot less than a new computer would cost.”

Mercury Extreme G4 upgrades are available for speeds up to G4/1.5GHz and all models feature 256KB of 1:1 L2 cache on-chip and 2MB of high-speed L3 Cache. They are compatible with Apple PowerMac G4 AGP Graphics (Sawtooth), Gigabit Ethernet, Digital Audio and Quicksilver models, and with Mac OS 9.2.1 or higher, all versions of OS X 10.0.4 and later including 10.3.x Panther versions. Each Extreme G4 processor upgrade is backed by a three-year warranty and a 30-day 100 percent money-back guarantee.

  1. Joe, where do you see any mention that the processor upgrades are essential? They are helpful in keeping a Mac in user longer, and nice to have to boost a system thats 6 years old into the new age, but you dont have to have it.

    I am personally looking at getting the 1Ghz chip for my G4/450. The machine is about 4 years old, and to pay $299 to keep it around for another 3-5 years is not a bad deal since my kid still uses it.

  2. My thoughts exactly Lokiz. My G4/450 will soon have the 1 Ghz upgrade also so it can maintain life for another 5 years. Worth it to me and my little G4, which still works great BTW.

  3. With installing G3 upgrades in all of our business’ 4400s and 6500s about 3 years ago, we kept those things buzzing for about 7 years. Now as we have been able to slowly trickle down to G4s everyone (except 2) by mid year I will have everyone on OS X with no huge spending increase. The upgrades were extremely simple and did not break a single machine. Now I try to add a better PCI grafx card to my in-laws 4 yr old PC and it goes nuts. It had to be put down permantley, also cause the Motherboard would not except a firewire PCI card, where as a 7 year old 4400 took one just fine. LONG TERM INVESTMENT. you get what you pay for. These machines are meant for schools who cannot upgrade every 3 years. integrated screen make it cheaper and more space efficent for education. I do agree a headless for business would be nice. (I love my cube).

  4. Jack A: Joe, you are one of the cheapest guys I know. I would hate to see what your wardrobe is like or what kind of car you drive.

    No need to get all snooty.

    Why are all dissenting voices greeted with personal attack? Is debatingt too difficult that the average Mac user must resort to other means?

  6. Mac & PC Guy. Joe Mc makes comments about how macs cost too much in a large proportion of his posts. My comment was meant to be ironic and point out to him that although he is perfectly willing to pay more for similiar products in some areas of his life, for some reason when it comes to computers, price gains an importance that is disproportionate in the overall estimation of value.

    Of course if Joe does wear all polyester suits and drive a hyundai then what was meant to be ironic might have hit too close to home.

  7. Hmm, Jack A’s comments didn’t read like a “personal attack” to me. Even his most opinionated posts generally have a less annoying and cranky attitude than those of many other frequent contributors here.

    Seems Joe feeds on the attention he continues getting here, regardless of its nature.
