Philips goes after Apple’s iPod mini with ‘Micro Audio Jukebox’

“Philips is about to move into the hard-drive-based portable sound arena with its Micro Audio Jukebox, the HDD060. The player stores 1.5GB of MP3 or WMA files on a 1in hard drive, is the size of a (thick) credit card, and weighs 93g. Philips expects to have it on sale here late this month for $449 (US$365),” Ian Cuthbertson reports for Australian IT.

“Rather than competing with established hard drive-based portable sound devices such as Apple’s iPod and Creative’s Nomad Zen Jukebox, the HDD060 will face off against a new generation of smaller devices such as Apple’s iPod mini and Creative’s MuVo2. The HDD060 and the MuVo2 have 1.5GB capacity and will deliver about 350 MP3s on the go, while the iPod Mini has 4GB. All are slim

  1. USB 1.1 – big frig – who cares? How often do you sync your MP3 player anyway. Looks better than anything from Apple! One big sync the first time and then it doesn’t matter when you only add an album or two each time. You Mac fags get erect over FailureWire everytime, but it’s meaningless. Right, Less-Than-3-Percenters?

  2. Ron,

“USB 1.1 – big frig – who cares?”

As usual, a PC user still obsessed with aincient technology. I bet you’ve still got a floppy (drive, that is). Why?

Come on Ron, throw everything you’ve got at me. Cause you’ll never win – I’m smarter than you’ll ever be.

  3. wow, when i first looked at the pic i thought it was an ipod .. had to blink to make sure .. oh and ron you are a retard shut up already. USB 1.1 sucks if you like to use your music player for mp3’s and data storage but oh wait your player’s HD isn’t big enough for that .. sorry..

  4. The correct spelling is “Whoa”… not “woah.” And the correct description of the product shown is “clunky-ass ’70s.” Can’t believe it’s actually white. USB 1.1? C’mon. What a dog.

  5. I personally choose not to buy another Phillips product for a very long time if ever. My mom worked for a Phillips Plant for over 20 years and my step-father was only 4 months from retirement when they closed the plant and moved it to Mexico. And then they had the audacity to make very little concessions to its former employees. If a company has that little respect for its employees, I believe that it does not deserve my money either.

  6. I think there’s some confusion in price: The article says $449, but that’s in “Australian dineros”. Still the iPod mini is $330 down under ($249 US), so the PhilPod would be about… (and I’m not doing the math here, just vaguely guessing) oh … $300 or so? I’m not sure they’d sell too many at that price.

It doesn’t really look that bad though – as far as iPod knockoffs go it has to be the best. Still, a blatant attempt at copying the best, and it’s still not as good.

As for ron, I’ve seen MUCH better trolls in my day. I mean come on, it’s like you’re not even trying! Where’s the security through obscurity myth? How bout the megahertz myth? Come on buddy, quit fooling around and bring out the big guns!

  7. Ron,
You must have an enormous amount of money invested in inferior windoz PC
equipment and software to have such a visceral reaction to Apple.
You also have a clear need for attention and abuse.
I imagine you’re like that character in Pulp Fiction that was bound in leather and kept in a box.
Go back to your box now little bitch Ron.

  8. “Philips is not a rinky-dink outfit (run by tree-hugger veggie commie hippie butt-pirates) unable to ramp up production like Apple. The iPod mini is vaporware to everyone outside the U.S. People can’t buy what isn’t available for sale. Typical Apple. Typical stupidity. Typical losers.”

Looks like Ron wins the “MORON OF THE DAY” award for his totally clueless and idiotic commentary.

For your information fly boy…The Hitachi Micro-drive is the source of the Mini supply problems and… oh forget it! No sense even bothering responding directly to someone possessing a below room temperature IQ.

  9. I’m a gun toting, bow hunting, flesh eating, flag waving, truck driving, right wing believing, former armed forces joining Mac user.

How you like them Apples, Ron?

  10. TO BE FAIR: Please note that the Philips website has said product listed for $219.99 and not the price listed above. (I’d still take an iPod mini, but we shouldn’t lie about the competition…)

  11. Philips has put less than one-half the storage capacity in a box than is more than 50% larger than a mini. Plus Philips has included a dreadful interface as well.

This ought to be a big seller with the Windows crowd who can’t stand anything Apple and are desperate for anything remotely similar to the mini. These folks can walk around saying, Look, I bought less for more, and its almost like a mini.

  12. You people do realize with every post where you adress it to ron he got exactly what he wanted. He wanted reply’s and it doesen’t matter what you say. It makes him happy regardless. He may even be a mac user who posts here normally. People use the internet to let out their hostility that they cannot publically express. Anyhow, it got way too much response for such a weak attempt. Personally I think mac users/pc users – doesen’t matter much – 90% of both of them are idiots…

  13. Oh, dear, swine-fline has just insulted a whole buncha people. Tsk, tsk how Ron-esqe. I jus’ luv it when the high and mighty 10% grace the rest of the us with their wisdom and snobbery.

  14. Wow – looks like some troll got dumped by HIS boyfriend recently – and I’ll be he was a Mac user too!
Get over it Ron, You couldn’t get your PINK MINI, and now you’re flaming Mac users… <yawn>
