Apple releases iPhoto 4.0.1

Apple today released iPhoto 4.0.1 which “includes many organizational and stability enhancements. Performance has also been increased throughout the application, giving you faster importing, smoother image viewing and easier Rendezvous photo sharing. This version of iPhoto also features improved thumbnail images in your photo library. To take advantage of this, your thumbnails must be upgraded, which may take a while, depending on the number of photos in your library.”

  1. Installed the update, had a freeze and rebooted fine, iPhoto takes some time to do something to the photo library, does help to speed photos.

  2. I upgraded and then fired it up. It asked to upgrade the thumbnails. (Couple of thousand). At first the estimated time to upgrade them was 44 minutes. But then the dual 2GHz G5s kicked in and in less than a minute it was down to 7 minutes! Woo hoo!

  3. I upgraded last night, all went smoothly. I have a dual 867Mhz G4 with 1GB of ram and it took about 40minutes for 8000+ photos (all of my slam dunks!)

I was very cautious (to the point of being paranoid) in applying this update…..
    1. logout
    2. login, launch only the updater
    3. after updating, I logged out again
    4. logged in, launched only iPhoto
    5. turned off my screen saver
    6. updated the thumbnails
    7. went to bed (it was all done when i got up)
    8. quit and relaunched iPhoto

I can’t say that i notice much difference so far, although with 8,000+ photos there were some kinks with scrolling, resizing and generally doing too much at one time. I will have to check to see if that has been cleared up.
