Tech titans give more campaign donations to Republicans

“The tech industry, which favored Democrats in the 2000 federal elections, is betting more campaign donations on Republicans this year,” Jim Hopkins reports for USA Today. “Bolstered by money from luminaries such as Yahoo CEO Terry Semel, tech has poured 55% of its $8.2 million in contributions into Republican coffers. That’s up from 47% in 2000, says the Center for Responsive Politics, a non-partisan watchdog group. Among top givers, only doctors and other health professionals shifted more to the GOP.”

“Despite the shift, tech remains ‘on the fence’ in its party allegiance, says Larry Noble, the center’s executive director. Still, the trend is noteworthy, he says, because the tech industry is a growing political player whose allegiance is up for grabs over hot issues such as offshoring of jobs. Republicans are viewed as more pro-business on topics of special interest to the tech industry,” Hopkins reports.

“Tech ranks No. 13 among givers vs. No. 8 in 2000. Lawyers, who favor Democrats, are No. 1, as they were in 2000. But much of the money for the 2004 races won’t be raised until later this year, so tech’s financial muscle

  1. Macs???

Are you mad?? When we could all be enjoying a rabid discussion over which candidate is the better liar, you want us to sit down all reasonable like and revert to talking about Macs.

Are you trying to start a fight??

  2. I am betting that the tech donations are simply hedging their bets. That’s why the 55%/45% separation. As mentioned, more money will flow later this year and it’ll probably go back & forth. When it’s all said and done, and we have the election, those contributors want to be able to tell the winner that they backed him all along…

  3. Yes, lets talk about Macs. A Mac is a computer, not a hamburger. It’s logo is an apple, not a fruit. But its good for you anyway….. Oh never mind, lets talk about politics. Actually, I’d prefere to talk about mushroom farming which I know nothing about.

  4. Just a minor clarification:
President George Bush is estimated to have a personal net worth of $20-25 million.
John Kerry has a net worth of over $1 billion. Thanks mainly to his nutjob wife, the Heinz Ketchup Queen’s who inherited a bag load of cash.

  5. Before it comes up, as usual, I will preempt:

“George W. Bush would have won a hand count of Florida’s disputed ballots if the standard advocated by Al Gore had been used, the first full study of the ballots reveals. Bush would have won by 1,665 votes more than triple his official 537-vote margin if every dimple, hanging chad and mark on the ballots had been counted as votes, a USA TODAY/Miami Herald/Knight Ridder study shows. The study is the first comprehensive review of the 61,195 ‘undervote’ ballots that were at the center of Florida’s disputed presidential election.”

Sorry to shine the light of truth upon your favorite lie, Libs.

  6. Any large corporation is simply going to back whomever they think will scratch their back the most if they win. It’s rarely any reflection on who their employees tend to support more or anything like that. Hell, some even give sizable donations to both parties in the same election year, it’s not all that uncommon. Basically, I wouldn’t put much stock into who is giving money to whom. It’s all monopoly money to these corporations anyway.

    That’s not what all the dealers round your way say ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”grin” style=”border:0;” />

  8. I shudder to think what shape this country would be in under the leadership of Gore. Im all for a powerful Military and Iraq will become a better country in the coming years, its good that Saddam is deposed. The whole oil thing sucks, Im concerned about this planet, and we should put our resources into researching clean energy, it should be a part of the new NASA moon program in conjunction with the dept of Energy. How about tax cuts for new/remodeled homes with energy efficient appliances and windows. And how about finishing the conversion of public street lighing to organic LEDs to conserve power and reduce bulb replacement.

  9. Dave H:

I suggest we meet with pistols at dawn on Parliament Hill.

Of course, I’ll be late – I’m coming from Guildford and I’m not a morning person – so can you make sure there’s a sausage and egg sandwich waiting for me!

  10. Red Wings,
Do you really think Gore could have done worse for this country than Karl Rove? Yes, I said Karl Rove, because anyone who thinks Bush actually comes up with ideas on his own is either naive or in denial.

Do you realise you are asking me to meet you on Hampstead Heath for a bit of sausage during the hours of darkness? ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”grin” style=”border:0;” />

  12. Dave H:

At Dawn I said! And I’d be late! Actually, v. late! Actually, around 10:00am!

What do you do for a job? Write for ‘Carry On’ movies or Julian Clary?

    ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”grin” style=”border:0;” />

  13. Jeff S.–
You should give up this myth that Bush doesn’t really run his administration. Washington Post reporter Bob Woodward (no Republican, he) already documented in his book on the Afghanistan war (I believe it was called “Bush at War”) how Bush personally makes all the key decisions and guides senior officials.
    Get informed–case closed.

  14. Macs are bipartisan–Clinton used one, Bush 43 uses one–don’t know that this is the place to discuss politics. Why tear the Mac community apart, let the peecee weenies tear themselves apart arguing politics.

  15. Dave H:

Ooooh, no! I’m a coward at a genetic level – the only bravery I ever display is recommending Macs to people.

I can prove this: I’m the guy at theme parks who lets people push in front of me in the queuefor the tea cup roundabout.
