MyCokeMusic.com: Europe’s biggest legit music site incompatible with Apple iPod

“Coca-Cola’s music download site Mycokemusic.com has said it has become Europe’s biggest legitimate music site, with 10,000 songs sold every week,” BBC News reports. “‘The figures from Mycokemusic.com have exceeded our expectations and we are delighted that consumers have adopted legal downloading in such great numbers and with a real enthusiasm,’ a Coke spokesman said.”

BBC News reports, “However, music downloaded from the website is not available in a form which can be played on Apple’s iPod, the most popular portable media player in the world.”

MacDailyNews Take: For reference, Apple’s iTunes Music Store is currently estimated to sell 1.2 million songs per week in the U.S.

  1. this doesn’t mean anything. Or does it? If iTunes can’t get into Europe soon, they might get so frustrated that the masses start to support Coke or OD2. Lots opportunities can hurt.

  2. Wish I knew what the doggone hold-up is on European iTunes.

I, for one, collect music from Europe and Canada.

I have no choice but to spend top $$ for CDs and shipping. Although the Canadian $$ exchange rate is favorable, I have to buy numerous CDs by mail in order to break even after the shipping charge is added. European CDs that are imported and then bought from my Canadian supplier are even more expensive.

Let’s just say that has put a damper on my spending for music originating out of US borders.

  3. The wording is refreshing. It’s saying that the music downloaded isn’t compatible with the iPod rather than the usual “iPod is incapabel of playing WMA”. It put the blame at Coke’s door, not Apple’s

  4. 10 000?? LOL
    HAHAHAHAHA
WMA is doing very well all over the world.
    HAHAHAHAHA
Nokia sells AAC music 1.2 billions worth in Europe. Coca Cola has to do little better than 10 000.
    HAHAHAHAHA
This story is best joke today.
    HAHAHAHAHA

  5. MacSmiley, I don’t think that iTunes Europe is going to be selling European music to Americans. I believe it’s going to sell music to Europeans. So you may not get any additional music on the European version of iTunes.

Couldn’t tell whether your message meant that you buy through a Canadian supplier, or you live in Canada. Same would apply for the Canadian version of iTunes, I suspect.

  6. Coke does not sell music in the Europe. Only in the UK. There is a HUGE difference in that. Apple will do it right. Others are doing it upside down and sunny side in the arse.
You will see. Watch and learn. Okay I want iTMS Europe yesterday. I know though that waiting for iTMS is worth every cent. It is going to be HUGE.
    WMA winning!
    HAHAHAHAHA
    Oh Joy

  7. Tunes for Windows can work on Macs and on iTunes for Windows. Someone ought to come up with a software hack for this but the hardware hack goes like this:
Download song in wma or whatever
    burn on cd
    open cd in iTunes
    import songs

I’ve done this on the pc I (sadly) have to use at work. Likewise Windows users can turn iTunes songs into other formats.

  8. Outside of the US, the UK is the biggest consumer of iPods, each one coming complete with iTunes on a CD. Even if the UK cannot get iTMS yet, we all know what it is, and we all know it’s coming to Europe at some point. For Coke to sell as many as it does with iTunes stalking from the shadows is an achievement in itself.

  9. I believe Coke *partnered* with an existing music download site in Europe, so they didn’t have to do much hopping over legal hurdles since the existing download site did it for them…

  10. Dear Dave ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />
Unfortunately Apple advertisement today is UK only. That is mainly, because in the UK they speak American. Okay France + Germany are translated. (58,6+60,4+82=201 out of 454 million). They have forgotten the original language(s) like spanish (and finnish) totally. (I must say here… Be American! Speak Spanish! If you are A Real Patriot!)
Other countries in EU are totally forgotten at this point. (Sad but true.) Apple has to kick start the iTMS Europe in every EU state simultaneously. It can be done with Mc Donald’s or something. All that is because this year European Union is larger and stronger market what the USA is. We are 166 million people more than the USA and nearly 130 million consumers more than USA has. In the EU there is 184 million direct internet users and in the new countries the growth has been in 2000-2004 155%. (Finland is totally saturated at this point = no new internet users = every baby is born with mobile telephone). Apple knows this and they will make it BIG and they will make it right. (Not Napster or Coca like). AAC is the only choice for music because all the big players have adopted it… Like Nokia (Okay my favorite company from FINLAND). Nokia sells over half a billion mobile telephones per year and you have to be compatible with that fact!!!!! Nokia does not and will not use WMA never ever. (Nokia dislikes Mickey Mouse Soft). That is a fact!!!! Music to Nokia telephones is worth over 1.2 billion thing every year!!!!!! (last years figure. this year even bigger). Apple has to get a slice from that!!! Nokia is at the moment worlds largest seller for the digital music!!! These dummies who calls them self as anal lusts don’t get it. (Unfortunately same goes with MDN because they tell you that Coca selling 10 000 songs in one week is a NEWS. Nokia sells 137 000 songs in every hour! Apple is getting there with Pepsi. I sincerely hope so.) In Finland if you buy an iPod you have pay extra 30 to Teosto. We have a normal VAT (that is 22%). So iPod 40 Gig cost 549 with VAT + 30 to Teosto = 579. Teosto was established in 1928 to administer the copyright of Finnish creators of music. This makes sense. 30 is nothing. It is those 30 songs that you have downloaded illegally. When iTMS Europe is ready, I will clean up all music that I don’t know if I really own from my Mac and my iPod. If I after that have something that is illegal in my iPod the 30 to Teosto serves the right thing.

  11. I can’t remember what I forgot. Basically, if MDN does not get the MESSAGE, I have to brake some MDN nuts, so that MDN will learn the basics. For that I choose Cashew.
    Funny though…
    1429 songs everyday.
    HAHAHAHAHAHA
