ZDNet Executive Editor Coursey: ‘Macs don’t crash and Windows machines do’

“In my computing life, there’s one constant: The Macs don’t crash and the Windows machines do. I mention this because on Thursday I went to see my friend Rob (Enderle, the noted industry analyst) and took along my Fujitsu Tablet PC. I used it at Rob’s house to take notes of our meeting,” writes David

  1. I read through some of the ZDNET responses. Many of them said “must be operator error.” Do the poor Windows users really fall for that tired old line. Microsoft Windows just plain sucks, but we’re gonna blame it on the user and tell him he must be doing something wrong. Geez!

  2. My parents bought a Mercedes-Benz car when I was 15.
Now Im 36 and Im driving that car. It looks like new, its lovely.

So, the lesson is: Mercedes-Benz cars are cheaper, and so Macs are cheaper.

  3. I can recall when David Coursey was as big of a Windows bigot as Enderle is. But Coursey, about 2 years ago decided to take a challenge and use (as much as possible) a Mac for a month. Alot of people thought it was just a gimmick for him to get readership and to ultimately slander a mac. But he wrote about it weekly and by the end of the month, he was a switcher. Sound like some one has to challenge Enderle to do the same thing — to get him to really try out a Mac for a month — rather than sitting on the sidelines and slamming what he doesn’t know.

Isn’t that amazing? Mac users are often times accused as elitists because we are willing to pay more than the cheapest crap, but if you read the responses as Jimbo pointed out, some PC users are elitists too.

These people who responded are mostly PC geeks who knows Windows inside out and therefore, avoided all the problems that average users get into. They just can’t see beyond their own little circle, that it should not take a degree in computer science to use a computer. Therefore, from their own experience, Windows is perfect and anybody who says otherwise is a fool. Any problem is due to user error.

That reminds me of our friend here who claimed that because his firewall was up and running and his security patches were installed and his virus definition was up to date, all Windows problems were exaggerated.

  5. “LOL – He did catch a virus from Enderle!!” – XABEX

Delicious irony, isn’t it? The guy who is a Microsoft cheerleader is the whore that spreads the disease. I wonder what his next quote is going to be like. “Ooh, we are sooo popular. Like, crackers target us because we are so wanted. They, like, envy us. My catching this virus is a proof that I am, like, the most socially friendly and will hook my computer up with anyone even with or without a Trojan (horse).”

  6. I’ve used PCs since way back when Macs were way more expensive and you had to get dirty with Dos to make anything work. I’ve seen a lot of traffic about Windoze users and Wintel bigots and Mac v PC on this very site. I’m only here because I got an iPod. I will likely switch in the next year – I want a powerbook, but will have to save. The thing is, a lot of people here think the iPod is a lovely distraction and that Apple should concentrate only on computers. Well i know lots of people from the strictly Windows only community who have decided to switch in truth because of the iPod. Why didn’t I buy a Dell jukebox? Who would? Now that I have a really nice piece of hardware my standards have gone up. You guys should relax. If Apple keep releasing Trojan horses things will change. With the spectacular virus rate of this year anything could happen. It takes a lot for people to shift, but when they do, they tend to do it in their millions.

  7. You know what? After reading the ignorant ZDNet responses from the pro-Windows users, let them suffer with the piece of crap they use.

When I talk to someone who considers themself to be a savvy computer user, and tells me that Macs can’t handle photographs or digital cameras, I just look at them and laugh.

  8. “They, like, envy us. My catching this virus is a proof that I am, like, the most socially friendly and will hook my computer up with anyone even with or without a Trojan (horse).” Nobody

Actually Bill Gates just said something that was kinda like this. It was something like “Windows is now a very secure system because so many people have been writing viruses for it and cracking the system.” Can you believe that guy? I guess its true that if you want to lie you should lie big. Plugging 100 holes in a sieve that has 1000 holes will not make it hold water; it is still a sieve man.

  9. smorr, I am hoping that Joe McConnel will really try out a Mac. He has been hanging out here enough that the only beef he seems to have left to cling to is price.

I think that if he buys a Mac and REALLY tries it out for like a month or two and doesn’t just goof with a friends Mac for a few hours he will find himself more and more doing what David Coursey does and gravitating toward the Mac and will find out that it is more than worth the price.

Cuz, when you down, and confused, when you need a helping hand, it’ll be theeeere, cuz you’ve got a friend. ?? ?:-)

  10. “I am hoping that Joe McConnel will really try out a Mac.”

Why do you all keep paying attention to this Joe McWhatever person anyway? I don’t even bother to read any of his posts any more. He just says the same rehashed unoriginal boring ol’ things over and over again.

If he never wants to use a Mac, that’s his choice. I don’t believe anyone should be forced to make the right descision or even forced to be open minded. It’s certainly not my loss if he doesn’t switch, so who the heck cares?

  11. it’s a shame that a family website like MDN allows cursing on the user comments [i.e. …don’t give a *hit…” in a previous comment]. It’s even more of a shame that any adult has to stoop to cussing to get a point across. I enjoy having anyone being able to come to the site without that offensive garbage.

It seems that mostly the PC users curse, too. Very interesting. Still sad.

  12. Don’t forget David C’s wonderful experience with office XP, He loaded it on his windows laptop (while it was in a dock/port replicator) On the plane he tried launching office XP to finish an article for a deadline. Office XP wouldn’t launch, saying his computer configuration had changed. Call MS to get a license or a code. Needless to say, he was SO Not Happy. This happened maby a month or two before his experiment to do everything on a Mac.
