Apple Computer Board member Gore blasts President Bush; is this good for government Mac sales?

Al Gore, who lost the presidency to George W. Bush in 2000, on Sunday assailed President Bush, accusing him of betraying the nation by invading Iraq. Al Gore is also a member of Apple Computer’s Board of Directors, having joined on March 19, 2003.

“‘He took America on an ill-conceived foreign adventure, dangerous to our troops, that was preordained and planned before 9-11,’ Gore told Tennessee Democrats at a party event Sunday. The former vice president said that he, like millions of others, had put partisanship aside after the September 11 terrorist attacks and wanted Bush to lead the nation. Instead, Gore shouted to the crowd, Bush ‘betrayed us,'” The Associated Press reports. Full article here.

Gore’s attacks come at a time when Apple shows increased interest in sales to government agencies. Apple was an exhibitor at FOSE 2004, a large technology trade show and conference for government professionals which took place last March 23-25 at the Washington Convention Center in Washington, DC.

“Apple Computer said… that it is experimenting with new efforts to boost sales of Macintoshes to business and government customers. Apple sales chief Tim Cook told financial analysts that the company last month launched a direct effort that’s aimed at the creative market and government entities, with 70 Apple employees working in either field sales or telephone sales,’ Ina Fried reported for CNET News.com this past November. Full article here.

Back in August 2003, The Office of Management and Budget added Linux and Mac OS to the list of supporting platforms under the Technical Reference Model of the Federal Enterprise Architecture. And, in September, MacTeens.com reported that the login interface files from a recent build of Panther contains text and images for a U.S. Government specific login interface including seals for the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, Department of Defense, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and U.S. Public Health Service. Then, in October, Apple published a knowledge base article with an Installation and Setup Guide for using the Department of Defense Common Access Card with Mac OS X.

In light of Apple’s new interest in selling Macs to U.S. government entities, does it make sense to have a sitting board member accusing the sitting U.S. President of “betraying the nation?” While no one would accuse us of being Dale Carnegie honor grads, it still doesn’t seem like the greatest idea to us. Should Apple rethink the Gore appointment or should Gore, for the good of Apple, step down from the Apple Board if he wants to continue to play politics?

  1. Wow. I can remember a time when Macintosh was associated with creative types who tend to be more left leaning. I guess those switch ads have managed to bring some right leaning Mac buyers in. Oh well, there goes the neighborhood.

  2. After reading this thread I have learned much:

    1) nothing happened out of the ordinary in FL. It was a completely valid normal voting procedure. (all that hubbub must have just been over nothing)

    2) Al Gore said he invented the internet. (When everything I read says that he did not say that, but he did have a major impact on the internet coming about as quickly as it did)

    3) Democrats are sheep. Yeah, ok buddy.

Personally I like the Rush Limbaugh analogy. He has gone on about the virtues of the Mac, and he speaks his mind as a right winger. I know that Al Gore is actually on the board of directors, but he is also in the political game, and it’s his duty as such to speak his mind too. I respect both of those guys, and am happy to hear they both dig on Macs.
    =]

  3. I just hope this does not jeopardize Bush’s reelection. I mean it takes at least 8 years to build a good Armageddon. Oh and go ahead and mudsling me as republican conservative or democratic liberal or whatever cause your aim is never accurate anyway.

I knew Bush would have a wonderful talent to build a nice Armageddon from his inaugural speech. Not by what was said, but what was not said (check previous presidents to see what they said and what he did not say and the lightbulb may come on).

Now Bush has got a hard on for Iraq and Bin Laddin (oh wait, he got some impotency issues over that one). Anyway, some easy target. Keep it up, the next ones however may bite back.

And then when you think it is all over, the real challenge begins.

Good luck Bush, humanity needs your cleansing.

Too funny!!! Isn’t he a filthy drug addict? How can he be a right-winger preacher-upon-high when he’s clearly a fat unseamly drug user…

    Here’s a good read:

  5. Its Time to Kill the Electoral college. Useless. Has no relevance anymore get rid of it. Add up the votes from all 50 states who ever has the most wins. this way you dont even have to worry about states who’s polls close hours before some are voting. KILL THE ELECTORAL COLLEGE!

  6. “I choose to just ignore the fact that “Algore” is unfortunately a member of Apple’s board and continue to happily use a Mac anyway. Being a Mac user is probably the only thing I have in common with Al Gore (Thank God!!!).”

Lance: using a Mac is probably the only thing I have in common with you. Thank God!!!

First, I wouldn’t have spread our troops as thin as he did. I support the effort in Afghanistan, but not Iraq. Finish one thing before you start another. I don’t see Bin Laden head on a stick being paraded down Broadway the way it should be. The money spent on the Iraqi war should’ve went to Homeland security(and don’t give me that the war is a form of Homeland security). If you’ve been listening to the news, there has been an ever increasing amount of illegal aliens entering this country from Mexico and with Bush’s new proposal to offer these individual certain rights in the U.S., the push to get in has been even stronger. Ask someone patrolling the border what he or she thinks of his new initiative which was nothing more than a gesture to gain votes. Even worse, the provision being offered will make thse workers eligible to withdraw from Social Security and the great thing for them is that they won’t even pay a penny into Social Security. But that’s not even the main issue. If all these illegal immigrants are making it in to the U.S., how secure are we really?

How about those environmental issues there? Sure, most people would bitch and complain that allowing electric generating companies to increase emissions is a bad thing (while it is) it also serves another purpose; the cleanest burning oil comes from the Middle East. By raising the allowable emission levels, it could be said that it could be a way to help us reduce our need for Mid East oil. But that’s an argument that can go both ways (sure, it could be seen that it means EGC’s can buy cheaper oil, and electric rates still increase, lower overhead + high rates = more profit), but let’s not get further into that. How about the fact that the EPA has lowered the standard of your drinking water. How do you feel about that? Oh, and btw, EPA is now allowing for a higher percentage of sewage to be used as fertilizer.

2.3 million jobs lost to oversea contractors, in both manufacturing AND “white-collar” jobs. How about maybe leveraging more taxes on those companies that export jobs and a tax break for those that employ more Americans? The revenue lost by giving the tax break to the American-employing companies could be made up in the taxes generated by those that would be employeed by such an incentive.

    Affordable health-care anyone?

  8. (darn character limit! ;p)

The tragic thing about our political system is that MOST people fall blindly into being either a Republican or a Democrat and are seldomly willing to look outside of their chosen party.

So Trevor7578, I welcome your words back. Show to me that your educated reasons why Baby Bush is better. And it better not be because the NASCAR loving, tobacco chewing, gun-toting side of America can relate to him. This country became the great nation that it did because of the people willing to learn and work towards it, not because we sat on our rears watching Jerry Springer.

  9. “Intelligence gathered by this and other governments leaves no doubt that the Iraq regime continues to possess and conceal some of the most lethal weapons ever devised.” Bush – 3/17/03

“What we don’t know yet is what we thought, and what the Iraqi Survey Group has found, and we want to look at that.” Bush – 2/2/04

  10. This is an asinine assumption. I live in the DC area, have been a Mac consultant for 17 years, and have been a speaker and presenter at FOSE. Most people in the DC area who work for the federal government hate Bush’s guts so Gore speaking out the way he is won’t hurt a bit. Besides, anyone want to take bets as to whether or not government purchasing agents even know Gore is on the Apple board?

Also, consider that the government prosecuted MS and convicted it of being an illegal monopoly. Did that stop anyone from buying PC? Get real!

The government will buy whatever it needs irrespective of what Gore says. Gimme a break!

  11. “uhhh people did die when Clinton Lied, specifically when he started lobbing missles to distract the nation from his penis adventures.”

    aahh, the Clenis!

    Everythings the Clenis’ ! fault!

  12. Natis, you are right, too many people become party oriented, or worse, become single issue voters.

I think, and I don’t have my finger on a source for it, but in both the case of the emission increase and water standards, Bush has rolled back the amount of decrease in emission and increase in standards that Clinton established, both by executive order in the waning days of his “administration”. Clinton had managed to alienate congress to the point that no idea of his, good or bad, could become law. What that all means is that water standards and emissions are becoming more eco-friendly, but not as quickly as Clinton thought they should be.

What does “affordable” health care mean to you, and who gets to sacrifice to make it so? Don’t forget that Hillary’s 1993 health care plan was to be run by the same health insurers that control the industry today.

  13. Al who? It is amazing what this man will do and say to get a little attention. Want to hear a good one, he is for the little man. Why don’t you ask him in what community he his living?
