PC World: iPod mini gets plenty of attention; don’t overlook music players from ‘the PC side’

“Apple’s recently announced IPod mini [sic] may be getting plenty of attention, but it’s not the only new digital audio player making a splash. Many of Apple’s rivals on the PC side used last week’s Consumer Electronics Show to announce music players with features and price tags similar to the IPod Mini’s [sic],” Anush Yegyazarian reports for PC World.

Yegyazarian then goes on to cover new offerings from also-rans Archos, Creative Technology, Philips, RCA, Rio, Sony, Aiwa, and Samsung.

MacDailyNews Take: Apple’s iPod (and iTunes) is available for both Mac and Windows, just to make sure everybody’s on the same page here. None of the players listed above will play songs purchased from Apple’s market-dominating iTunes Music Store.

  1. Why is it that so many magazines and news papers have trouble printing “iPod” instead of “IPod”? It really shouldn’t be big deal, but it’s annoying. It makes them look uninformed too.

  2. It’s “iPod mini” and not “IPod Mini.” I can always tell when I read a news story if it’s from a predominately Windows only site simply based on how they spell that. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />

  3. It is fascinating to watch isn’t it? Is it that the PC industry is finally understanding what it means to be shut out based on the whim of one vendor? Dell talking about “industry-standards,” Microsoft bitching about “choice.”

Morons. iTunes IS the industry standard! The iPod IS the industry standard!

Microsoft bitching about “choice.” If that isn’t a hoot, I don’t know what is.

Choice to MS means you choose MS, or else.

You know what would be really, really cool? Apple should bring itunes an the iPod to LINUX.

How come nobody gave a shit? Hey Mr. Dell, how does it feel to be on the wrong side of the fence?

  5. “How come nobody gave a shit?”

LOL. So true. Those players from ‘the PC side’ are just background noise at this point. Junk to pawn off on the ignorant unwashed masses.

(Note that I specified the ignorant unwashed masses because many of the unwashed masses have been buying iPods… and good for them!)

  6. [You know what would be really, really cool? Apple should bring iTunes an the iPod to Linux! ]

Agreed. I think this is a must do, ASAP.

The only difficulty for Apple might be ‘choosing’ Gnome or KDE!

  7. Does anybody know where fairplay is offered to other electronics vendors so they can support ITMS songs? The website I saw for Fairplay had not been updated in like ages and didn’t seem like they were offering licenses. Makes me suspicious somehow. I think Apple might be being very cagey about this. Perhaps they have learned a few tricks from Microsoft and are beating them at their own game?
