Japan, China, South Korea: ‘anything but Windows for us’

“Japan, China and South Korea have agreed to cooperate in a project to boost research and development of software for operating systems other than industry leader Microsoft’s Windows, a Japanese trade ministry official said Friday,” The Associated Press reports.

AP reports, :The project, proposed by Japan’s Trade Minister Takeo Hiranuma at a conference in Phnom Penh, Cambodia on Wednesday, is intended to bolster the popularity of Windows’ rivals, such as Linux, and boost their share in such markets as digital cameras, mobile phones and car navigation systems. ‘The idea is to get existing non-Windows operating systems, such as Linux, to be more broadly used, rather than developing a totally new operating system,’ said ministry official Takashi Kume.”

“Kume said development of non-Windows based software that is not Windows compatible would provide users a broader range of software and allow manufacturers a wider choice of platforms in developing electronics and information devices,” AP reports.

MacDailyNews Take: Is it just us, or lately do people seem to be starting to wake up from some decade-long Windows-euphoria/stupor and deciding there must be a better way out there somewhere? We, of course, suggest starting right at the top. Why waste time?

  1. What the Hell is a press conference on OS doing in Cambodia? I’m Cambodian-American. I’m just wondering. I mean, we’re kind behind the times, y’know?

But yeah, it’s good to see people waking up and seeing through Windows.

  2. Why do i feel that this hatred for Microsoft will pass? As it always does? The world goes on Anti Microsoft like every other year and then what happens? Microsoft makes more and more customers what’s the deal with that? I’m an Apple user, always have been, but you know I don’t mind the small market share, it’s just a number anways, we have better hardware, better software, and we know it……

  3. “…industry leader Microsoft’s Windows?”

Microsoft is the “industry leader” in sales only. Kind of like McDonald’s is the “industry leader” in hamburger sales, but they hardly make the best burger.

It’s not an OS conference that was held in Cambodia, but rather a meeting between the Trade and Industry ministers of Korea, Japan and China. The three countries are a pretty significant force in consumer electronics, and have announced their intent to base the future development of intelligent household appliances and mobile gear on open source software like Tron, FreeBSD and Linux. That’s a pretty significant and conscious move to avoid Windows-based architectures, which never reached a significant market share outside of the PC world anyway.

OS X is not open source and hence won’t qualify. Besides, Tron for example would be a much more reasonable choice as an OS for appliances and mobile phones.

  6. Beanies:

Darwin (the core of OS X) IS OpenSource. The only thing you’d miss is the Mac look and feel. ALL you can do in a shell in OS X you can do on a Darwin only machine. Something that Darwin will run on full OS X installations.

BTW, you already have a Darwin only machine in your OS X: just start in safe mode, then essentially you’d have a Linux-like machine. If you have XDarwin installed and a thirdparty windowmanager you even have a graphical interface. (And everything OpenSource).

  7. This is amazing: Micros**t is accusing the tri Governments of practicing unfair competition. LOL

At Redmont they are losing their minds over the fact that someone is actually escaping their suffocating grip.

Japan minister explicitly commented about the recent security and said Windows is not up to provide a secure service to Gov institutions.
Maybe some US gov high brass should go to Tokio to get a briefing.

  8. AND, if you think of it, this shows once again monopolistic attitude from Micros**t.

“Bill, our sw suck and customers are not happy”, “So what, everybody HAS to go Windows right? What would they do? Go Apple? UAHUAHUAHUAH. Launch an ad campaign and tell people we are concerned”.
