Microsoft Hardware GM: ‘‘Basic beige is a thing of the past’

“Sometimes, it’s not just how your computer works, it’s how it looks. Microsoft Corp. on Wednesday unveiled new computer keyboards in periwinkle and metallic red… and even a mouse outfitted in leather,” reports Helen Jung for Associated Press.

“…The [Microsoft] hardware unit plans to help computer users accessorize well into the future, said Tom Gibbons, Microsoft hardware general manager… Microsoft [has] hired designers and experts in ergonomics [and] the company changed the shape and color of its mice, Gibbons said. ‘Basic beige is a thing of the past,’ he said,” reports Jung. 1. I don’t think leather sounds at all absurd. A mouse is a tactile device. Why should it be hard plastic ? It may look odd, but I bet it will be very comfortable to use.

Not every Apple idea is a good one and not every Microsoft idea is a bad one (assuming they actually have any original ideas, of course;). The great thing about this is that it shows the hypocrisy of microsoft, not it’s poor design. I’s poor design is in software, not hardware.

  2. Oh… and I have no voice muttering “blue dalmatian.” It was drowned out by “flower power.”

(I like the 5 buttons on my MS mouse, but having owned four of them, of different generations, and had ALL of them wear out or die prematurely, I won’t be buying another.)

  3. skizo clearly doesn’t read the Wintel-centric “news” sites if he thinks we talk about M$ a lot. MDN’s mantra is “where Mac news comes first” – not “where Mac news is the only thing we talk about and we shelter ourselves from everything else.”

Besides, this is clearly an Apple-related article – as the comments have reflected. Perhaps skizo’s mind is too numb to realize this after staring at his cheapo Dell monitor all day.

  4. “Can you imagine how sticky and ugly those will be after a few days of treatment with sweaty hands?”

Nay, underestimate Microsoft you clearly do, my good lad. Just you wait… after the mouse is released, you can buy little leather jackets for it. Maybe even with metal spikes, or if you prefer, biker style leather jackets. So, you can dress up your new mouse while the old leather stuff is dry cleaned. Who says Microsoft is not good for the economy… even dry cleaners benefit!

  5. Micro$oft has the fortune of having most of their dollars come from their OS versions, and the missfortune of trying to do other hardware products as afterthoughts, where they really know they aren’t going to even earn enough to pay for one of Gates & Buffet’s train trips.

If you were a real creative mechanical product designer, like say Jonathan Ives, would you go to Microsoft and expect to be able to create anything of significance?

  6. There was a typo in the original story. Microsoft does NOT have plans for a leather mouse. They are planning to introduce a PLEATHER mouse. It’s a tribute to Windows. You know, kinda feels like the real thing but is really just a cheap immitation.

  7. And the hits just keep on coming! What’s next? The ePod. Supports WMP only, is fully integrated into the OS so you can organize and play songs from an OS window, saves you money on CDs because you can’t burn them anyway and oh yeah, runs Windows LE?
