Analyst: Microsoft ‘hated because it’s misunderstood’

“Prejudices and misconceptions about Microsoft make it hard to evalute the company’s merits. The biggest myths about Microsoft are that its desktop products are overpriced, it doesn’t respect its customers, and reliability and security are poor. And some think the company is downright evil,” writes Rob Enderle over on InternetWeek.com.

“In nearly two decades of studying Microsoft, I’ve been able to dig through the hype that the company generates, as well as the misconceptions its detractors create, to see more of the real company than most of you can ever experience,” Enderle writes.

“People will tolerate a lot from a company or a person that they believe is on their side. They won’t tolerate even the existence of a company or person that they believe to be against them. And too many people clearly think that, whatever Microsoft is, it isn’t on their side,” Enderle writes. “There are three key legs to the belief that Microsoft should be avoided: They charge too much, they don’t respect their customers, and their products are unreliable and insecure.”

Enderlee then goes on to explain that Microsoft doesn’t charge too much, people are just confused “simply because the lack of alternatives gives customers no reference points for comparison.” As far as the perception that Microsoft doesn’t respect their customers, Enderle focuses solely on CIO’s and their perception of Microsoft vs. large OEMs who provide better perks and gifts than Microsoft as the reason for Microsoft’s lack of respect. Ignoring Apple, Enderle focuses on the alternative, Sun, and writes, “No matter how bad things seem, take a look at the potential destination before jumping out of the frying pan. Trust me, things really can get worse.” Enderle ignores “regular people” using Microsoft products and why they might not feel respected by Microsoft. Enderle then tackles the reliability of Microsoft software writing, “Way too many people are complaining about breakage of Microsoft products. I’m on current Microsoft products and I hardly ever crash.” He then compares Microsoft’s reliability issues with, “SCO was hit recently with a major denial of service attack and they run a Linux distribution. Oracle was hit the day after they announced their product was ‘bulletproof.'”

Endlerle closes with his explaination of why Microsoft is not “evil.” The whole article could’ve easily been writted by Microsoft’s marketing department, but please don’t forget that Enderle knows “more of the real company than most of you can ever experience.”

According to the description below the article, “Rob Enderle heads the Enderle Group and spends his time building PCs, exploring emerging personal technology, and helping clients avoid expensive mistakes. You can write him at renderle@enderlegroup.com.”

  1. Wow…seriously, just wow, I can’t believe that guy wrote that…you gotta be kidding me…if M$ is benign and secure, why the hell did I just get 5 security notices this week alone and on top of that, why is the department of homeland security being asked to reconsider using M$ products?

this isn’t a friendship, this is business. this is not about being misunderstood but about RESULTS!!!!!!!!! people lose $$$ cos’ of this crap.

  2. “simply because the lack of alternatives gives customers no reference points for comparison.”

That’ll be because they acted illegally to rid themselves of competition / form a monopoly.

  3. Actually these pro-Microsoft articles that are popping up of late are good news. Because people are getting pissed off and fed up with Windows and are now seeking alternatives. These articles are solely meant to curb the oncoming exodus from Windows to more viable operating systems.

  4. “No matter how bad things seem, take a look at the potential destination before jumping out of the frying pan. Trust me, things really can get worse.” Worse? Worse than what you get on Windows now? What’s his idea of worse, complete systems failure?

“I’m on current Microsoft products and I hardly ever crash.” “hardly ever crash?” This is acceptable? I guess to it is to him.

Huh, so apparently to determine whether or not MSFT is evil, I have to have visted their campus??? Huh? “Much of this perception is based on poorly founded beliefs from people who have never been on the Microsoft campus, nor have they ever tested their beliefs against what other companies do.”

Oh, Oh, I get it, so that I can drink the kool-aid like this guy clearly has.

All makes sense now. Man I haven’t seen such clear MSFT shilling like this in a long time…

  5. Enderle forgets the fact that ddos attacks like the ones on oracle and sco, were done with the help of unknowing m$ owners. The m$ systems get infected with viruses first, otherwise you could not perform a ddos attack in the first place.

  6. The TO-DO list of the average industry journalist:

    Monday: Bash Apple
    Tuesday: Apologize for MicroSoft
    Wednesday: Bash the Macintosh
    Thursday: Bash Apple
    Friday: Bash Linux
    Saturday: Apologize for Microsoft
Sunday: Go to Church, then write Monday’s Mac Bash article.

  7. I’d like to tell this guy that there are people out here in the world that do indeed know Microsoft very well and still don’t like or use their software. Once upon a time I worked for MS (from ’95-’97) in Irving, TX and have been exclusively a Mac user now for almost 3 years. It’s not that I think Microsoft is necessarily evil or anything, I just simply found a better alternative. So yes, I definitely take exception to his idea that only those who don’t truly know Microsoft are ever critical. I’m sure I know a lot more having worked for them for almost 3 years than he ever possibly could…

In my opinion, their biggest problem is that the company (as well as their software) is incredibly bloated beyond control. So much so that no individual person or team of people can keep a decent hold on things, the fact is, it’s just too big and too complex. That amongst many other issues is what led me to leave to pursue other opportunities job wise and eventually led me to stop using their operating systems as well.

  8. AppleWorks – $80 – does 90% of what Office does.

Office – $400 – does 100% of what AppleWorks does, with thrice the procedure, and it also has macro viruses, spyware, and costly upgrades!

  9. >>SCO was hit recently with a major denial of service attack and they run a Linux distribution<<

Now that’s rich. Here’s a question: if linux sucks so much, then why *is* running their web-site on linux.

Sco *owns* UNIX, right? Sco is on an anti-linux campaign. McBride said: “Linux is a bicycle, SCO-UNIX is a luxery car” right?

So why did sco decide to run their web-site on mandrake instead of unix-ware or open-server? Could it be because scox products suck so bad that scox doesn’t even use those products themselves?

  10. (Microsoft doesn’t charge too much, people are just confused)

    License 6. Word $399 – Nisus$79.

    (…the misconceptions its detractors create… )

    Fer’crissakes, he actually wrote that.

(the perception that Microsoft doesn’t respect their customers)

    License 6, Rob.

(their products are unreliable and insecure.)

Two worms and a major virus in three weeks proves that Windows is VERY SECURE and RELIABLE.

In BelzeRob’s mind – Bill Gates is above critisism, like Castro.

  11. I am very familiar with this guy and he is the biggest ass on the internet.

This is not about “evil” or “good”. This is basic business 101. It’s great to be a monopoly, it sucks to buy from one (esp. an unregulated one). Always has been, always will be.

  12. Dial-a-Quote Enderle strikes again. He speaks out aginast all reason to come up with this new line. Poor mis-undertood Microsoft. Their software is really secure! Really. Honest! Cross my heart and hope to die! Becuase I say so!

What a lame excuse for an analyst.

  13. He then compares Microsoft’s reliability issues with, “SCO was hit recently with a major denial of service attack and they run a Linux distribution”.

Damn that Linux is junk! If only they used good ‘ol IIS. I know that when my little T1 gets 45MB/s from my ISP’s DS3s which are getting 155MB/s from their upstream’s STM-1s which are getting hammered by an army of M$ Windows zombies controlled by a 13 year old kid, then IIS saves the day.
