“Apple Computer has landed a major customer for its Power Mac G5, with Virginia Tech confirming Tuesday that it will use 1,100 of the machines as part of a supercomputer cluster now under construction,” report Ina Fried and Michael Kanellos for CNET News.com. “The university said it has been working with the Mac maker for months to set up the massive computer cluster. The dual 2GHZ machines started coming off the manufacturing lines last month, the school said.”
“‘Virginia Tech’s idea was to develop a supercomputer of national prominence based upon a homegrown cluster,’ Hassan Aref, dean of Virginia Tech’s College of Engineering, said in a statement. Apple notified some customers this week that their dual processor Power Mac G5 machines would be delayed as the company shifted its priorities to certain educational institutions,” Fried and Kanellos report.

The CompUSA near me finally got in one of the 1.6 gig boxes. It was very cool. Funny though, while I was there checking it out there was a PC user talking to the Apple employee. The Apple rep opened it up and showed the inside off, and told him all about the new architecture, etc. The PC guy’s reply was, “Well, it’s a nice case, too bad there’s no software available.” The Apple rep explained that there are thousands and thousands of titles available and in virtually every category, and that with the G5, programs like Photoshop will run incredibly fast. The PC guy said, “I use Photoshop at home for digital pictures. What does it need to run any faster for? It runs fast enough.” Funny that before the G5 came, the PC users all said “Macs are too slow.” Now that they’re faster they say, “Why does it need to be that fast?” Classic ignorance. I had to laugh.

He probably did not have anything better to say, but that is hilarious!! you must admit he was curious, why else would he be there in the first place.
BTW, I don’t mind my G5 being late… Just don’t keep me waiting forever….Geeeez!
Considering that most PC users only use Photoshop to crop and save porno images off the net, they are not in a position to know jack about WHERE a Mac owns them when running Photoshop.
Frankly, without any professional color management on Windows worth a damn, I still find it interesting that anyone would pay for Photoshop in the first place. Paying the service bureau to color correct their files on a Mac before they print them has got to hit them in the wallet. But oh yeah…Macs are more expensive! LOL!

I saw a board on ZDnet where PC people were talking about the G5 as “overkill” for home computer. LOL
Can you really overkill something. Speed was so important and now that the Windows world is losing big chunks of ground, speed is no longer important.

Next thing we will hear from PC users when the 3GHz will hit the street: “clock speed is overrated”
G5 is not an overkill for home computer: it is THE killer of PC home computers.
With OSX, speed was never the the big attraction, it was the user experience…the environment if you will. This is very true but it’s also nice to be the FASTEST FUCKING COMPUTER around now!
