Apple: Mac OS X Panther ‘fast approaching’ release

“Mac OS X 10.3, codenamed ‘Panther’, is on the verge of reaching its first major milestone, Apple has told developers,” Tony Smith reports for The Register. “The company yesterday said the operating system was ‘fast approaching first candidate release,’ according to a Think Secret report. The claim was made as Apple made the latest beta test build available to software authors.”

Smith reports, “First candidate status effectively marks the end of the beta test period and the commencement of final testing. The OS’ feature set should be frozen at that point. The software may go through a number of release candidates before being declared sufficiently stable to become gold master – code for ‘ready to ship’.”

  1. Congratulations, Apple!! I am impressed by, both, your ability to innovate as well as the speed with which you bring it to the general public.

MacDailyNews (and all other zealots regardless of their interests): I think we can do without that last comment. It is very sophomoric. We do not become better merely because our rival has become weaker. Such Microsoft news may give the Apple staff and stock holders a reason to cheer, but it has very little effect upon the reader (the reader is not a rival of Microsoft). Merely because the MacDailyNews staff uses Apple, not Microsoft, as their focus doesn’t make them or their website any better in terms of their writing/reporting. But, it does seem to induce an air of immature arrogance in the writing that many readers can do without. Supporting Apple with your dollars is much more effective than chatting like two old hens about Microsoft’s problems. It is becoming very old.

    More news, less “Moo”s, please!

  2. IMHO, bravo, MDN! “Moo,” indeed. Please print more “moo” type commentary – it lighens up the day! Aryugaetu, try MacCentral for stuffy, canned, sellout, boring “Mac News,” they have just what you’re looking for, stick-in-the-mud!

  3. I agree with Mark. That’s why MDN worded it as “MacDailyNews Take” – it’s a take, not news. But then, what do I know… ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />

  4. I disagree. I read MDN every morning to get my Mac-related news for the day and I AM a rival of Microsoft. After seeing all they do to keep their monopoly alive, I’m happy that they run into problems every day. It does lighten up the day for me at least since I am stuck using a M$ machine at work and can’t wait to come home to my Mac. Continue to give us your take on things MDN!

  5. Steve Jobs does not give presenations at major events any longer without major news. I predict also the shipping date for Panther will be announced, the much-anticipated 15-inch Powerbook, maybe a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse and perhaps some other revs. There WILL NOT BE announcements of G5 Powerbooks. That will happen next year.

  6. AreYouGayToo?: I like the MacDailyNews Take on things, and I too feel they should publish more “Moos” in their reports ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />
