Ex-RealNetworks exec’s new venture aims to become iTunes for video

“A former top executive at RealNetworks has started a venture to help producers distribute video programming over the Internet,” reports Frank Barnako for CBS.MarketWatch.com. “Scott Ehrlich’s new firm is called RedTie Media. Ehrlich and his two partners, including Karen Laszlo and Scott Cohen, plan to encourage companies to develop download businesses, according to Rafat Ali of PaidContent.org. Erhlich recently left Seattle-based RealNetworks after serving nearly three years as vice president of media acquisition and distribution…”

“‘The next layer is using the Internet as a delivery vehicle,’ Ehrlich told Ali. ‘Ownership over subscription [The company has been talking to sports leagues, cable TV and entertainment companies] think of it as the DVD vs. TV model.’ He compared what RedTie will do to Apple Computer’s iTunes Music Store. ‘It’s doing (this) for the music market. We will be doing it for the video market, particularly specialty video,'” Barnako reports.
