Microsoft serves up cease and desist letter; delays development of VirtualPC competitor RealPC

We all remember that, back in february 2003, Microsoft Corp. announced that they had acquired Connectix Corp.’s Virtual PC products, including Virtual PC for Mac, Virtual PC for Windows and Virtual Server. Microsoft also hired many of the Connectix employees that worked on the products to continue development.

Now, FWB, owners of the revived Real PC and Softwindows for OSX has posted the following letter on their website:

Dear FWB customers,

As you are all aware, FWB is working diligently to update Real PC and Softwindows for OSX. In May, while working on this project, we received a setback in the form of a cease and desist letter from Microsoft.

We are working to resolve the issues with Microsoft, and this has caused some delay, much to our frustration. We are committed to having a beta for you to test for us and help us optimize, this summer.

  1. Well. Micro$oft tells everyone else not to develop nor to even think about creating software that is probably better and more user-friendly than theirs….and if they do, look out–we’ll send our lawyers to strong-arm you into submission!! They don’t even care weather or not VPC is Mac-friendly; but, God forbid someone makes any software that can help the user in the workplace that is non Micro$oft……..

And you thought that they were mac-friendly……greed is always going to be greed, no matter what.

  2. No comment. Well, just this one : the only application which crashes – freeze 🙁 my new Ti PB G4 is the latest revision of VPC. Don’t want to sport a M$ application on my hard disk any longer. It’s time to get rid of Mr. Bill.

  3. Another step on Big Bill’s path to world domination — and in perfect keeping with his past modus operandi: buy any potential competitor and kill their product line.

If there was ever an argument to break Microsoft into little pieces (a la the original Baby Bells, not the conglomerates the FTC has since allowed to re-congeal), this is it…

  4. M$ is really showing fear by its actions. They know just how cool OS X and Macs are. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” /> It doesn’t surprise me that they want to go opposite Apple’s always INNOVATE philosophy.
