Apple posts Security Update 2003-06-09 for Mac OS X

Security Update 2003-06-09 addresses a potential security issue when the Apple Filing Protocol (AFP) is used to reshare a Network File System (NFS) mount. This update also addresses a situation where LDAP bind authentication requests may be improperly sent when using Kerberos authentication.

The update is available via Software Update Pane of Mac OS X System Preferences.

  1. and now apple becomes Microsoft…. Call it what you will, this is the exact same thing as all the “hotfixes”, “updates”, “service packs”, and “patches” that MS uses that we Mac users have been using as proof of Windows’ instability and insecurity. I guess it’s time for us to receive payback from Apple…

    argh

  2. The real question is whether these “hotfixes” break already working software. That’s been the problem with MS hotfixes and why they haven’t been applied en masse.

  3. wtf are u retards on about?

os x is built upon bsd, the most standard, stable, secure unix there is.
how can you say ‘apple is becoming microsoft’?
    you trolls

  4. Yes, I agree, you guys are trolls, and lame ones at that.

In this world of supercomplex systems, there are always going to be problems with network security that require updates if you want to stay secure.

Some of these might cause other problems. Grow up.

If this makes apple more like MS, then it’s about time.

PS It is true that in the old days MacOS was so foriegn to the hacker community that security flaws discovered usually didn’t effect it. On the other hand that also left us out in the cold with regard to a LOT of great software. Personally I dig OSX.

  5. This is NOT the first time Apple has released such an update, so why this update makes Apple ‘become Microsoft’ I simply don’t understand.

Go install VirtualPC and run the Windows update and see how many countless updates, that all sound just alike, are offered up…

Howver, like any other man-made creation, Mac OS X is not perfect and does not exist in a perfect world, and for Apple not to continually work to make it better, and more secure would be just plain stupid.

And besides if they didn’t attempt to fix problems, you’d be complaining about that instead.

  6. Hey, I use Red Hat 8.0 at work, and frankly have no idea how to update all the crazy system RPM’s that come up or what half of them mean. Apple update is handy, clear, and bloody simple to use. And it keeps the system up to date with the latest of security updates, and they’re offered pronto. Fine by me.

  7. Can no longer log in after installing the security update. Passwords simply don’t work from login screen anymore. Tried to use reset password utility from install CD, but that didn’t work either. However, can still connect to the machine from other macs using the normal usernames and passwords. What has this update done?

  8. Sorry… apparently there is some issue with the login button. If you are having this problem, simply hit return instead of using the mouse to click on the login button and all is ok. What a weird bug.
