RUMOR: New Apple ‘Pal’ application and/or device on the way?

“Top Technical Tips has posted some screenshots (including a box shot) earlier in the day showing off a new piece of Apple software/hardware called “Pal.” According to the site:

“It is being classed as an Internet service software that is basically the ‘Mac Desktop’ for the Internet. Not like .Mac has been for a storing files, but something completly new. Coining the terms: ‘Illuminate the Internet,’ ‘See the Light,’ [and] ‘Green Light to the Internet.’ The box also mentions it will only work on Mac OS X 10.3 and above.”

The box shot reads in part:

“Green Light the Internet.”

“Forget discs. Forget synching.”

“Pal takes your desktop and puts…
your fingertips using Mac OS X 10.3…
can take your life on the road…
use your computer and Pal to fix…
problems. So what are you waiting…
see the light.”

“Update: It is looking more and more like this piece of software or hardware from Apple will basically take your desktop/files and put it on to “Pal” …and you will be able to access your desktop and all of your preferences from any Panther Mac that has “Pal” installed. Nifty, assuming it doesn’t turn out to be fake, that is.”

  1. The box typography looks phoney. Kerning is very bad, something Apple is always careful of. It’s photoshopped to death (as are almost all photos on the Apple site). Next subject.

  2. I am a big rumor fan–I read rumors more than news somtimes! I enjoyed this rumor too (although it seems to be fake), when I found it on macrumors.com.

But still, I like the disintinction–rumors from rumor sites, news from news sites. So my friendly suggestion stands, for the site owners to take as they will. Sorry to have offended anyone along the way.

  3. Sounds just like the capability Windows NT has: the ability to log into your ‘own’ vironment from any computer connected a network (be it LAN, WAN, intra/internet). About bloody time too!

    The link still doesn’t work….

  5. clearly a poor fake. Apple would never use an image this badly drawn – the guy couldn’t even be bothered to do all the metal fiddly bits at the bottom of the glass, so it ends up looking like some kind of bed-pan! and a round, symetrical bulb (with perhaps just a smalll amount of sophistication to the green tones) would have helped make the joke just a little bit more convincing. And, as mentioned the kerning is raw off Quark.
