Asustek Computer offers $28 million for Apple iBook factory

“Asustek Computer Inc. has offered Elitegroup Computer Systems Corp. $28 million for a manufacturing plant, primarily used in the production of iBook laptops for Apple Computer Inc.”

“Asustek, one of Taiwan’s biggest ODMs makers of laptops and motherboards, announced its plan to buy the facility and its equipment in Chungli, Taiwan. More than half of the factory’s capacity has been allocated for Apple, Cupertino, Calif.”

“Though Asustek declined to comment on the purpose of the planned purchase, some analysts and industry observers said that the company is hoping to land orders from Apple.”

“‘Asustek wants to begin establishing contacts with Apple, and does business with them,’ said Ben Lee, a research head with Nomura Securities Co., Taipei. ‘The purchase has made it closer to getting what Asustek wants.’ Currently, Asustek only has a few OEM customers, with Sony Corp. of Japan as the biggest one,” reports Faith Hung for ebnonline.com.
