The Baltimore Sun: reaction to Apple’s Al Gore board addition ‘fierce’

“The former vice president joins Apple Computer’s board,” writes The Baltimore Sun’s David Zeiler in his article, “Al Gore: Asset or liability?” He asks, “Will he help the company, or serve as a lightning rod for criticism?”

“Few additions to a company’s board cause even the barest ripple of reaction from shareholders, never mind customers. But few companies are the lightning rod that is Apple Computer Inc., and few board additions list ‘vice president of the United States’ on their resume.”

“When Apple said March 19 that former Vice President Albert Gore Jr. had been elected to its board, the initial reaction was that of surprise, with some mild approval and criticism.”

“Famous arch-conservative and longtime Mac user Rush Limbaugh promptly posted his dismay on his Web site, characterizing it as ‘devastating.'”

“‘I have to see if one bad apple can spoil the whole bunch,’ Limbaugh wrote. ‘Gosh, I hope not, and I hope he doesn’t have anything to do, other than ceremonial duties, with this outfit.'”

“Reaction in forums on the Mac Web was considerably more fierce,” reports Zeiler. Full article here.

  1. It’s good to see that the ‘environmentalist’ Al Gore is not ashamed to take money from a company which produces millions of couputers each containing multiple pounds of toxic trash each year. Is this a case of one set of rules for important people such as Al Gore and one set of rule for everyone else.

  2. Newspapers’ recount shows Bush prevailed
    USA TODAY

“George W. Bush would have won a hand count of Florida’s disputed ballots if the standard advocated by Al Gore had been used, the first full study of the ballots reveals. Bush would have won by 1,665 votes – more than triple his official 537-vote margin – if every dimple, hanging chad and mark on the ballots had been counted as votes, a USA TODAY/Miami Herald/Knight Ridder study shows. The study is the first comprehensive review of the 61,195 “undervote” ballots that were at the center of Florida’s disputed presidential election.”

Sorry to dash your illusions with facts, Barnew Walters. Click here for USA Today article.

  3. The quote about Bush winning a recount is techincally correct, but basically wrong. If ONLY the disputed counties had been recount, Bush would have won. If ALL of Florida had been recounted (as the Florida Supreme Court ordered) Gore would have won according to the same study.

To repeat only a selected little bit of the truth, is to lie.

  4. Bush may have won Florida… only Jeb Bush knows for sure…., But he DID NOT win the popular vote… A sad systematic problem created by the antiquated Electoral College…

    Hail George W. Bush
    Hail to the Theif

  5. You have GOT to be kidding me! People are actually ignoring Al Gore as he relates to this story and arguing about who won the 2000…yes 2000 election… What if they had elected Truman to the board? Would the Dewey supporters come out crying in droves? (Yeah, I know they’re dead. I am making a point) Get over it. The election is over. Bush won, like it or not. If we had recounted every state, or even the entire state of Fla. are you folks so sure Gore would have won? http://fs.huntingdon.edu/jlewis/Outlines/BushCountyMapMandate.htm
Yes, Gore won the popular vote, but we don’t elect presidents according to the popular vote. If you have a problem with it, write your congressman. None of which tried to change the electoral college system after the election, I might add. I am finished, and I hope this subject is finished as well.

  6. Actually, I believe it was Gore who was identified as a thief in that whole Democratic fund-raising issue a few years back that Janet Reno swept under the rug for him.

It sure is nice to have friends in high places.

  7. Funny how the voting irregularities in that election occured in the state governed by the candidate’s brother. It’s going to be a long time before the smell of that fish goes away, if ever.

  8. A Republican talking about honesty in campaign financing is oxymoronic!!!! Noooo Wait.. It’s Laughable…. Oh My Good that’s funny….

Check out the Multi-Million Dollar Contract Dick Cheney’s old company just Picked up….

Geezzz I love you Republicans for a Good laugh…

Good thing you really don’t believe your own propoganda….

You relly Don’t believe it do You?

  9. In the wake of Apple’s announcement that former Vice President Al Gore was elected to the company’s board of directors, President George Bush announced this morning that he would demand a recount.

“I am sure that when the votes are tallied again,” Bush press secretary Ari Fleischer said, “Apple will find that President Bush was, in fact, named to the board, not Mr. Gore.”

  10. You do have to wonder about the wisdom of appointing Gore to the board.

Jobs just alienated half the country and put his personal politics ahead of the shareholders.

Regardless of your political persuasion – it was a goofy move.

  11. First off, the writer obviously doesn’t listen to Rush. His web editorial was totally tongue in cheek. I’m sure he doesn’t really give a fig whether Algore is on the board or not as long as the Apple hardware maintains it’s high standards.

As for Al on the board; what qualifications does this guy have? He’s never had squat to do with a for profit enterprise. The execs running the business have put symbolism over substance in making this decision. This is more telling regarding their competence than Al Gore’s.

    Richard L.

  12. Yes, anyone who has listened to Rush knows he WOULD NEVER take a cheap shot at anyone. Haven’t heard him utter his “assumed room temperature” line much since a caller threw it back in his face when his own father died.

  13. I suspect that Algore brings his connections to the educational community as a means to shore up the educational sales efforts. A good try. However, Al’s lack of truthfulness (read lies and distortions – for a “good time” do a google search on “al gore lies”), vicious personal vitriol unfortunately taints Apple.

  14. Hey guys….let’s give Vice President Albert Gore his due. If Limbaugh and other thugs can love there Mac’s why can’t Mr.Gore? He is bright and served as VP for 8 full years. I think that he will do a great job with the other board members all with the samew goal-move the mac forward!

Apple has survived only because of Mr. Jobs leadership, and he is very close personal friends with former Presdient Bill Clinton.

OS X is running quite well since the Gore announcement. I think it may let right wingers that the left does some things very very well.

Then again, our current President is close buddies with box maker king Michael Dell so you decide?

Good luck Mr. Vice President, and long live my favorite computer company!!!!!!!!!

  15. Sammy,

You’re missing the point. Although I’m a dangerous right-winger and listen to Rush every day, I’d certainly think it wouldn’t be wise for Apple to elect a prominent Republican, particularly a controversial one, to the board.

If you really look at this through the eyes of what’s best for Apple, I’d think you would agree. There’s nothing to be gained by alienating half of your potential marketplace.

  16. Apple has less than 20 sales people contyry wide selling in the Federal space. Do you really think having a beltway bandit on the Apple board is going to change Apple’s federal toe nail print with the government? Let Al have a little fun and get that 25% Apple discount. It can’t hurt sales anymore than Apple sales preventative team is doing now.

  17. Apple has the right to hire anyone they want. Why is our former President Controversial ? Perhaps former board member Mr. larry Ellison is also a very controversial outspoken man.

You right wing thugs love to dish it out but hey guys, face it, our respectable former President, Mr. Albert Gore is on the board and thats that! Maybe Limbaugh will sell his mac’s and get more diet pills? Fat chance!!!

  18. Sammy,

Al Gore was our Vice President. You really are a crazed wacko aren’t you?

It’s obvious you’re just on a bash-Rush-Limbaugh campaign. You don’t really give a hoot about Apple.

  19. “Why don’t smart people ever post anything?”

Because arguing on the internet is like competing in the special olympics. Even if you win, you’re still retarded.

PS: When he wasn’t shamelessly humping for votes, Al was a pretty conservative Dem.
