IDC report shows Apple U.S. market share gain

“Market research firm IDC has posted the results of its Worldwide Quarterly PC Tracker for the fourth calendar quarter of 2002. The company reports that Apple has held on to its fifth place spot in US PC shipments, with a slight gain in market share.

According to IDC’s numbers, Apple’s marketshare for the fourth quarter was three per cent, rising year-over-year from 2.9 per cent in 2001. The company reported shipments of about 385,000 units for the quarter, behind fourth place IBM?s 649,000.

IDC also noted that Apple ‘lost ground sequentially,’ but added that it has set the stage for faster growth this year by reducing inventory and introducing new products such as the new 17- and 12-inch PowerBook G4 models.

‘Apple’s strongest performance was in retail, where the company has been aggressively courting Windows users,’ said IDC,” reports Peter Cohen for Digit. Full story here.
