Video of Mac OS X 10.4.1 for Intel running on Dell laptop posted online
Monday, June 13, 2005 - 07:30 AM EDT

Video of Mac OS X 10.4.1 for Intel has been posted running on a run-of-the-mill Dell laptop.

The "About This Mac" box isn't very clearly shown - do you have a zoom on that camera, guys?

http://rssmac.altervista.org/video/

MacDailyNews Take: What do you think? Real or fake? We have our doubts, since the most obvious thing in the world would be to show the "About This Mac" box clearly.

1st post maybe...

Yea, it 'looks' real.
Who knows for sure.

Jun 13, 05 - 08:42 am Comment from: steve

wow.

Dells really suck.

Jun 13, 05 - 08:42 am Comment from: Ed

Of course its real, but look at how slow it is. Did you notice how choppy it was when he was scrolling in safari. It reminded of the days when i used a performa 6360

Jun 13, 05 - 08:48 am Comment from: scott schor

the video would not play on my office dell, because I don't have quicktime 7. how was it created in quicktime 7 if it were running on a dell box?

Jun 13, 05 - 08:49 am Comment from: RG

Obviously a fake.

QuickTime 7 Public Preview for Windows

Jun 13, 05 - 08:56 am Comment from: Felix

The redraw and responsiveness look an awful lot like they've VNC'd into a Mac... Without seeing the About this Mac box clearly, I'm thinking it's fake.

Jun 13, 05 - 08:57 am Comment from: macnut222

"Of course its real, but look at how slow it is. Did you notice how choppy it was when he was scrolling in safari. It reminded of the days when i used a performa 6360"

There are two reasons for this horrible video performace:

1 - The Dell doesn't have a graphics card with enough oomph.

or

2 - This is a hoax and the Dell is actually running Pear PC.

I'm voting for #2 - I have a 500 MHz G3 iBook that has better Quartz performance than that crappy Dell.

Jun 13, 05 - 08:58 am Comment from: funkmaster_dan

Comon now, its pretty obvious its either running a VNC client or pearPC, look at how choppy the video is.

Jun 13, 05 - 08:59 am Comment from: AL

Quicktime does run on OS X.

Quicktime does not run on Windows.

People need to get over the fact it is an Intel Processor underneath it.

Remember Jobs said that he mandated that ALL Apple Software work on both IBM and Intel?

Quicktime is not dependent on Direct X or other MS product. Quicktime is an Apple product. And it does work on an Intel box. He demonstrated it at WWDC.

Jun 13, 05 - 08:59 am Comment from: Dave H

Window screen redraws give it away. Definitely faked using VNC.

Jun 13, 05 - 09:00 am Comment from: AL

clarification to above...

Quicktime does not NEED or REQUIRE Windows or Direct X to run.

Jun 13, 05 - 09:03 am Comment from: homer

looks like a full scrren video with a little rehearsal to me

Jun 13, 05 - 09:04 am Comment from: R

Either way, it's kinda' like putting fancy high heels on a muddy pig. OS X looks out of place on that Dull.

Jun 13, 05 - 09:07 am Comment from: Chris McElligott

Why did the window minimise into the desktop and not the dock? Craptapular fake

Jun 13, 05 - 09:12 am Comment from: Petey

Ironically I couldn't get the video to work on my G5 Dual 2ghz Power Mac!

LOL!

Jun 13, 05 - 09:14 am Comment from: retro cat

Yup, Apple really knows what they are doing.

I hope millions use this hacked version, and then Leopard crushes Longhorn in the press. Then all of those hacks can buy a Mac for real.

Brilliant.

Jun 13, 05 - 09:16 am Comment from: BriAnimations

I think it's fake. On the dock you can see about 1000 applications. That's a lot of Mac apps to have installed already considering this has been out for what? 24 hours? and that's a lot of *mac apps* for a PC person to have...

But I could be wrong

Jun 13, 05 - 09:17 am Comment from: Message to R

I think it's "lipstick on a pig".

ps yea, I think it's vnc or pearpc - it does seem rather slow doesn't it.

pps the other question is, how would someone have ripped off a copy of the Intel OS X anyway,... weren't the machines all pre installed? Are people trying to say that someone managed to acquire either a disk image from an installed machine, or an install disk, whilst they were at the WWDC, with Apple's watchful eye looking over their shoulder? Pretty good effort if so.

Jun 13, 05 - 09:18 am Comment from: retro cat

Oh, and this is totally fake. Already been debunked around the web.

Jun 13, 05 - 09:19 am Comment from: Al

OS X on a Dell is like high heels on a filthy pig.

I think that says it all. Now I don't even need to download the video.

Jun 13, 05 - 09:19 am Comment from: James Hess

I used to sell Dells in the mall, and that Dell laptop in the video was pretty old, probably at least 4 years old, if that makes you feel any better about how choppy it looked.

Jun 13, 05 - 09:22 am Comment from: BriAnimations

Also - looking at the "About this Mac" info, in the section where it would be Processor type, clearly, I can't see what the text says for sure. But I do believe you can make out bigger blurred text (capitol letters) and some gaps (spaces). Now, looking at my "About this Mac" info for my processor, the formatting looks extremely similar to:

Dual ## GHz PowerPC G5

Jun 13, 05 - 09:54 am Comment from: Naraa Haras

It's VNC. I run this at home. You get the blocky outlines when doing the Genie effect, the window scrolling refreshes the same too.

Sad.

Jun 13, 05 - 09:54 am Comment from: bobby

Looks like VNC in full screen mode

Jun 13, 05 - 09:59 am Comment from: thirty

its a fake -

def a video

how do we know?

they show us the hand on the scroll pad right at the start

we're sucked in - we think its actually being controlled...

then we never see the hand controlling the pointer from then...

well done.

Jun 13, 05 - 10:12 am Comment from: Sol

The graphics performance looked emulated on that laptop. It is a scary thought that suddenly all PCs can load OS X but for the next few years PPC will be the better choice. On PPC OS X is stable and mature while Intel will have some growing pains. It may be a while before Intel-only software by a major Mac publisher appears. If all software for the next two years is written with cross-platform compatibility in mind then I expect performance to be worse than Windows versions of that software.

Jun 13, 05 - 10:16 am Comment from: edit

fake...its Quicktime video clip played in fullscreen..

Jun 13, 05 - 10:26 am Comment from: Random Coolzip

QT7. screw that. why should i lose functionality from QT6 Pro to "upgrade"?

Apple can bite me. Charge for new features? Sure - but don't take away features I've already paid for; the "free" version of Quicktime 7 costs QT6 Pro users $20.

Jun 13, 05 - 10:26 am Comment from: Harry

So what ? This will keep Apple Mac , Stev & Co a hot item the coming year.

Jun 13, 05 - 10:53 am Comment from: Viridian

"Why did the window minimise into the desktop and not the dock? Craptapular fake"

Chris,
Not necessarily. I haven't seen the video, so I can't comment on whether it's a fake or not (nor do I necessarily care), but with Unsanity's Windowshade it is possible to minimize windows to the desktop with the "Minimize-In-Place" feature. I do it all the time, and it's actually a very useful feature for me.

As to whether people have managed to get the Developer Transition version of Tiger running on generic x86, does it really matter? It's highly probable that it's a time-limited release, and that production versions of Leopard will only run on Apple hardware.

Jun 13, 05 - 10:57 am Comment from: sam_head

The About This Mac shows only one thing that can be read. That is:

The Processor reads only one line long. It has Blaa Bla Blaaaaa Bl

On a G4 Mac that has an L3 cache it reads two lines, with the L3 cache amount displayed underneath. 1.25 Ghz PowerPC G4, 1 MB L3 Cache. If you don't have an L3 then there is no second line. Then an area for memory, then one for Startup Disk. Three areas in total.

On the keynote video the Processor line was only one line long and read: Intel Pentium 4 3.6 Ghz. Then there was a area for Memory. No third area.

This video did not display the Processor line the same way it did on the keynote. It has Blaa Bla Blaaaaa Bl
Then a second area for memory.
Then a third area.

This videos processor line could not possible read Intel Pentium as the shape of the blobs are not the same as the keynote with short shorter longest shortest just like it does on a PowerPC. Also the third section is there like on a PowerPC, unlike on the Keynote.

Conclusion: FAKE.

Jun 13, 05 - 10:58 am Comment from: John

Al, Quicktime runs on both Windows and Mac and has done so for several years now. Go check out Apple's home page at http://www.apple.com and then click on the quicktime tab. You can download quicktime for both Mac and Windows there. Quicktime 7 preview is also there for Windows users as well.

Jun 13, 05 - 11:01 am Comment from: LastLaugh

If you look close enough it looks like a CRT tube layed over the laptop. First kicker....if it was real, the friggin' guy would of uses a tripod.

Jun 13, 05 - 11:04 am Comment from: Left Rear Tire

Could be real. It is slow because they have more than one app open on a Dell. Same problem we have at the office, Purchasing refused to up the RAM from the min. required to turn it on. We videotaped the Windows performance and had choppier video than what is on that site.

Jun 13, 05 - 11:08 am Comment from: Chris

I'd guess that it is one of a few things. Either a video as others have pointed out or something like Cherry OS / Pear PC full screen (I.E. Lag / and the fact that it's a Dell :( ) Just some thoughts...

Jun 13, 05 - 11:18 am Comment from: cubox

IT'S a FAKE

is a VNC viewer on a laptop

see the dock there are teh VNC server icon active

and see la right of laptop the pcimca card that linking

bye

IT'S A FAKE

Jun 13, 05 - 11:25 am Comment from: Dave Marsh

I've never used PearPC, but irregardless, that's a LOT of apps in the Dock for a newly installed OS.

Jun 13, 05 - 12:13 pm Comment from: tenolian Bell,Jr.

Ironically I couldn't get the video to work on my G5 Dual 2ghz Power Mac!

LOL!

Make sure you have Quicktime 7.

Jun 13, 05 - 12:46 pm Comment from: DaddySteve

EVERY version of OS X Apple releases for Intel for now on will be hacked by someone to work on Dell and other WinTel box's. If someone knows where to look and puts the effort into finding it, they will be able to install the latest OS X on their regular Intel box's.

Jun 13, 05 - 01:56 pm Comment from: M.X.N.T.4.1

Yep, quite mw{simply} fake. As stated already you can see the vnc app in the dock, specifically as he mouses over various items and they magnify.

Jun 13, 05 - 03:45 pm Comment from: Steve

Yep, agree with everyone - obviously a fake, most likely VNC'd.

What gave it away for me was the awful performance of the graphics, but did you notice how fast the spotlight search results came back?

Jun 13, 05 - 04:15 pm Comment from: justified

Real or fake, really doesn't matter. One can hack this crap together all they want, but if it doesn't provide an OS environment for actual productivity, then it's just geeking out for the hobbyists.

Anyone who thinks there will be an advantage to running a pirated copy of a Mac operating system on any garden variety PC isn't interested in actual work, creation, or productivity within the platform.

Jun 13, 05 - 05:39 pm Comment from: chilly

This is VNC / Remote Desktop / whatever!
- Why didn't he film the about box closer?
- Transitions are so weak (especially Genie effect)

Jun 14, 05 - 05:03 am Comment from: RSSMac.info

Ooops: the movie "Mac OS X on Dell" has been transferred because the website that hosted it has exceeded bandwidth limits.
Now is on: http://homepage.mac.com/rssmac/RSSMac/

Jun 14, 05 - 07:11 pm Comment from: Its Fake, but is this?

There is no chance that is real.
For a start notice all the applications in his dock. Would anyone playing about with OS X on x86 hardware bother to install all those PPC apps under rosetta?

Secondly pause it when he scrolls through the dock near the right end. You can clearly see VNC is running.

The performance is consistant with how VNC runs over my home LAN, especially the way the windows redraw like that.

That aside, looka these!

http://maconmac.bastix.net/intel1.jpg <-- Booting
http://maconmac.bastix.net/intel2.jpg <-- Desktop
http://maconmac.bastix.net/intel3.jpg <-- About This Mac

Now it really doesn't prove that it's not running under PearPC with a hacked 'About This Mac' window. Yes, it is possible, I've seen it done to fix overclocked machines that didn't report their processor correctly

Still, this looks a lot more authentic!

Jul 23, 05 - 09:22 am Comment from: Mark

*** FAKE ***
Definately fake. Did anyone not stop to think that they didnt show the laptop as a whole in use. The hand using the trackpad was not seen during the operation so you could not see the hand moving with the cursor. This suggests that the screen was merely a full screen video playing.

Think about it.

You know im right. :D

Dec 28, 05 - 06:02 pm Comment from: Jediah

I think it's real because, my freind who is a NETWORKING major at Wentworth Insitute of Technology was able to run a MAC OS on his old Compaque laptop...I was there to witness it...i couldn't believe it...He said there were certain things that did not work and it couldn't recognize certain hardware associated the laptop but otherwise alot of the other functions worked fin....I don't know what to make of it....
