Vice President Cheney’s Apple iPod recharge takes precedence aboard Air Force II
Thursday, December 22, 2005 - 08:39 AM EST

"Vice President Dick Cheney didn't suffer for comfort on the cavernous cargo plane that he rode into Iraq and Afghanistan this week," Nedra Pickler writes for The Associated Press. "The Air Force loaded the plane with the 'silver bullet,' a mobile home in the sky strapped down in the middle of the belly. The accommodations included sleeping and working quarters that protected him from the noise and cold of the cargo hold during a more than five-hour flight into Baghdad... The rest of his traveling party was not so lucky. Cheney's senior staff and junior aides were assigned to a cramped three rows of seats in front of the bullet, while reporters and Secret Service agents had to sit in jump seats along the side with a view of Cheney's stainless steel exterior walls... Despite the noise and seating conditions on the C-17, Cheney's staff eventually was able to nod off after days of exhaustive travel. Cheney emerged from his more spacious quarters at one point to pose for a picture standing in front of several rows of his dozing aides."

Pickler reports, "The vice president is an iPod fan, and keeping it charged is a priority for his staff. Normally that isn't an issue, even when he's flying around the world. Air Force II is equipped with outlets in each row of seats. But when Dick Cheney was traveling home overnight Wednesday from his diplomatic mission, most of the outlets went on the fritz. Working passengers began lining up their laptops to share the power from a couple of working outlets — particularly the reporters who urgently needed to prepare their articles to transmit during a quick refueling stop in England. But when Cheney said his iPod needed to be recharged, it took precedent above all else and dominated one precious outlet for several hours. The vice president's press staff intervened so a reporter could use the outlet for 15 minutes to charge a dead laptop, but then the digital music device was plugged back in. That way, Cheney got his press coverage and his music, too."

[UPDATE: 10:39am EST: fixed "full article" link.]

MacDailyNews Take: Newsflash for Nedra: That's right, honey, you're not as important as the Vice President of the United States of America. If you want so badly to be the one who gets to ride in the "silver bullet," quit writing wire stories for AP and go get elected. As for Cheney's iPod recharge prohibiting mainstream reporters from filing their stories, we say, "Go iPod!" It's just too bad that Cheney's iPod couldn't have somehow stopped the publishing of the majority of Nitpickler's particularly meaningless pile of words (we do appreciate the iPod stuff, but didn't like having to wade through the whining about how the U.S. Vice President gets better accommodations aboard planes than do beat reporters).

Note: We believe that politicians are nuts to be politicians nowadays. Thanks to the media and the political climate today, politicians quickly become twisted caricatures that bear no resemblance to human beings. Regardless of your political party, try to remember that they are actual people. The politicians that you "despise" are almost always much nicer and warmer than you'd want to believe and the ones you "love" almost always have many more flaws than you'd ever want to admit.

MacDoctor-
Thx for your sacrifice and your families sacrifices.

You have to cut G-Spank some slack, I'm guessing he's a student or public school teacher. His views of this country & political system are pretty polar.
Maybe once he works for a real company & starts paying taxes his views will become a bit more realistic.

A teacher once told me- "Liberals make the staunchest conservatives the older they get" I've found this to be true.

Merry Xmas!

Mac Doctor -

You don;t have to cut me any slack - in fact it is my viewpoint that people who serve this country deserve to be respected for that. That is why I find it so terrible for Bush's campaign to attack Kerry for his service, and Max Cleland as well. Merry Christmas to you sir!

Steev,

Put the crytal ball down, it doesn't work. If you would read my posts, you'd find in fact that I am not polar. I am quite a centrist, in fact. You are blinded by your own myths, just like a windows user is blinded by the myths of the Mac. You have this definition of "liberal" and it's messin with your mind. The only thing you got right is that I am a man.

Hey, Im a conservative!

A real conservative though, you know, the kind who believes fiscal responsibility the free-market system, the constitution, and that the government should stay out of people's private and sex lives, and not so much the "bushie-conservative" type who believes in christian-holy wars, torture, illegal domestic spying, no-bid contracts, corporate welfare, ignoring proven scientific fact in favor of cartoonish ideologies.

All you fake conservative wanna-bee's should pick up a history book and learn what a REAL conservative looks like - cause bush aint it.

Have a merry Christmas all!

P.S.
Did you know that Christmas is a Pagan holiday? That has nothing to do with Christianity? Of course you didnt... like I said go read a history book. From the Pagan tree, to the gifts left at the foot of this false idol of gluttony and greed, enjoy your Pagan day!

As far as I know, iPod drives are NOT approved for the storage of classified information. I work for the Gov't (Army civilian) and they beat this into our heads monthly. Nothing classified goes onto a machine unless its been reviewed for vulnerabilities like TEMPEST (reading data from a machine by its electromagnetic emissions) and having proper security features.

Personally sensitive, maybe. Classified, no.

Unless the iPod is in hard-drive mode,if its connected to a computer its not "registered" with your only option is to format the iPod entirely. And somehow I don't think Cheney is tech-savvy enough to be using his iPod for backup disk.

Dec 22, 05 - 01:05 pm Comment from: Rick Veda

Next time Vice President Cheney needs to charge his iPod in-flight, he should throw a reporter out of the airplane.

It won't get his iPod charged any faster, but maybe one of his aides could lie down for a nap across the seat the reporter was wasting.

I see my post here asking MDN how John Matarese's post qualified for removal yet the masquarading ones did not was removed!

But I did post right around the time "the Update" occured.

Which criterion did that post meet? And which one will this one meet?

• Duplicate posts may be removed to save space. There's no need to keep adding the same information over and over in a thread.
• Off-topic posts may be removed.
• Corrections of spelling, missing links, etc. may be removed after we've made the correction (and noted the correction below the article) in order to eliminate confusion.
• Use "fsck" in place of you-know-what - it's an MDN tradition. We try to replace you-know-what with "fsck" whenever possible.

Merry Christmas MDN. May Santa bring you an ethics in journalism book and place it under your tree.

Spank, EVERYBODY "thinks" he/she is a "centrist." That's the whole point. "I'm not weird, it's everybody ELSE who's weird." However I've known plenty of so-called "centrists," and you, sir... ain't one of them. I offer ALL your posts, in this thread and others here, as proof.

Plus this: As a repub, I can attest, along with many others of my ilk, that my party has gone much farther toward the "middle" than at any other point in my lifetime. Yet in your posts, you consistently bag on them, with NARY a balancing attack on the Dems (libs, pick your own nickname). Let's accept this as proof that you are AT LEAST considerably to the LEFT of Republicans.

Which again, makes you anything but a centrist. You are like your idol, John Kerry, who never could admit to what he is: a full-on, bleeding-heart, head-in-the-sand ... L-I-B-E-R-A-L. But until you own up to it, you're also something else: a pissant.

Actually junebug,

Your post identifies you as anything but centrist.

It is quite possible to detest the current administration without liking the democratic party.

I do it every day.

Anon,

You are kind of right about Christmas, but wrong thinking that people dont know it. The so-called Christmas tree is a Pagan/Wiccan symbol, and the 25th of Dec historically was never a christian holiday, until some king in rome decided to merge all of the different religious holidays into the end of the december. So whatever time of year the Christians used to celebrate Christ's birthday, became the same time that the Pagans celebrate the solstice, and the traditions and customs were mixed.

In the 4000 years prior to that, Christmas had nothing to do with religion, and for many today it still doesnt.

Oh, and the bush administration is still twistedly sick and evil - if you cant see it you're not centrist.

We've long looked for a word to describe the ex-military who today work against this country.

Cleland lost his limbs to friendly fire. His bitterness against the military is at least understandable.

Kerry lied to get his medals. He also conducted unauthorized meetings with the enemy while still in the Navy, which is why he has not released his records to the public -- notice, that he has released them to friendly press (NYT/LAT) who have continued to cover up his less-than-honorable discharge.

From all accounts, Representative John Murtha acted honorably and even heroically in Vietnam.

We've long looked for a word to describe the ex-military who today work against this country. "Traitor" can accurately be applied to jackasses like Kerry, but how about Representative Murtha? How can we accurately and honorably describe him with a word that also describes the anti-American wing of the Dummycrat Party?

The word is "defeated." Murtha, Kerry, and Cleland are defeated soldiers. They fought in wars the Dummycrat Party would not let the United States win.

They have been defeated, and now fight for the enemy.

The only ones to honestly cheerlead the current administration are supporters of a fascist dictatorship. This is an administration with no respect of law or of executive oversight, certainly no respect to the constitution or the courageous men who framed or those who risk their lives to protect it.

Oh, and you are? What an arrogant git!

Well, yes I am (tech-savvy, that is). I use my old 10 Gb as an emergency backup drive, fer instance.

In my experience, people of Cheney's generation generally aren't tech-savvy, and most are near tech-PHOBIC. My parents are prime examples. Both are smart, intelligent people, but they just can't (or won't) grasp how to operate anything more advanced than a digital clock. Every time I visit, I'm setting/fixing/adjusting something digital in the house. And they want NOTHING to do with computers.

Who knows, maybe I'm wrong about Cheney in this case, but I doubt it. Not a reflection on his smarts (from all accounts he's very intelligent), just his pre-digital generation.

Patton had the right idea -- let our enemies fight it out among themselves.

I would love to watch what happens when a bunch of liberal faggots get together with hardcore Islamofascists. The liberals would get ass-fscked by the Islamofascists and then executed for being gay. All the while, they will be blaming a Republican.

Pickler is a prime example of the generation of entitlement. "What's mine is mine and what's yours I'm entitled to." Chris:
Most people I know consider me a Reactionary. Look it up. It's more conservative than conservatives.

It should be noted that I made the reference to Clinton's haircut fiasco. I smack both sides when they need it. I don't really care for political parties at all. I've always voted for the person. I voted for the first Bush (George H. W. Bush). He had the best resume before becoming president I've ever seen, and I know a couple people who know H.W. personally -- basically the they refer to him as a reasonably bright jock. I did not vote for his son -- either time. The son is definitely not as intelligent or insightful as his father. W is just more politically connected than his father was or is.

to G-Spank (the name given; I'm not addressing G-Spank directly):
Then how do you classify someone who was in a form of the military and just did not show up? Yes, I'm referring to W.

In the Guard persons flying almost always fly with a wingman -- it is extremely rare not to unless you are just ferrying a plane to some other place. Surely if he fulfilled his requirements like the current administration claims he had with the supporting documentation just being lost then they should be able to drag out AT LEAST ONE person who will verify they flew as his wingman during that period. They can't ALL be dead.

It is also interesting to note that you make no mention of another prominent Democrat who suffered in the military... Senotor Inouye of Hawaii. Having had several discussions with the Senator over the past half dozen years, I would say he is anything but defeated or a traitor. He still shakes my right hand with his left hand.

It would also be interesting for you to note that the last time we actually WON a war the Democrats were in power. Unless I have my history wrong, Republicans have not won a war since the Civil War.

And before you rag on me personally about my military experience... I was in for six years during a time when we were more likely to have gotten spit upon than spoken to. I wasn't an officer. I was one of the grunts. I did the real work -- and no, I didn't spend my time in the States or in Europe. And NO, I was not drafted -- though my draft number was 9! And as for my family's history... last generation had one doing EOD work in the U.S. military in Korea. The generation before that had someone offically declared dead (two officers showing up and telling his spouse he was dead) so that he could do things the military still will not talk about -- and they knew he was alive all the time. (My understanding is that military regulations have changed and they can't do that anymore -- intentionally declare you dead when they know you are not just so you can do their dirty work.)

I won't attack anyone who was actually out there, in the military, on foreign soil as being anything but a patriot to our country. They may have radically different political views than my own, but they love the U.S. and have risked it all for the U.S. The fact that they are still alive, like me, I will not hold against them just as I will not belittle their service because of their political views.

MDN Magic Word: attack
If you are going to attack, attack on the facts and not due to partisanship.

Getting off my soapbox now...

To Shadowself:

Great post - I especialy couldn't agree more with the point that if you've served and been discharged honorably, then the brick bats about 'patriotism' and 'treason' should be put away. Regardless of political position.

I did my bit during the Reagan/Bush years. With all the money that was pouring in from the 80s buildup, Military service had for the first time become a pretty lucrative proposition. For many enterprising 18-22yr olds it had even become a kind of welfare program , where they knew they could sit on their thumbs for 2 decades and get a nice pension in their late 30s/early 40s. No one really expected to go to war - in fact many said if they HAD expected a war, they would have gone into the Guard or Reserves (I got in quite a few heated exchanges on THAT topic)! Regardless though, they did what few others would - signed up knowing they'd be 'the first line' if anything did actually go down (whether they expected it or not), so I still gave props.

IMHO, the fact that guys like McCain, Kerry, and Cleland - dudes who volunteered to get their asses shot off - get the 'slime treatment' is just proof of mental illness on the part of their accusers. Whether you want to see them as heros or not is beside the point; that they came when their country called, and are documented as having done the most dangerous jobs in the process, is the only point that matters. Anyone dissing them because they can't stand the word "Liberal", or have bought into the Cult of Personality brand of political belief, is an idiot.

I'm a conservative, but I'd have to be blind to not see that - as well as the fact that Bush jr didn't do much at all when he had his chance.

I'm out - cool mad

Dec 22, 05 - 09:22 pm Comment from: losers

There are so many losers here. "Freedom of the Press" -- OK. Sure, let the press report on all sorts of stuff. That doesn't mean the VP has to provide outlets for their laptops. Just like real photographers carry extra batteries and film, real reporters who rely so heavily on their laptops should carry extra batteries. Boo-hoo.

Patriot or Traitor? What did that person do during his/her service time? Did they shoot unarmed children in the back? Did they lie about their whereabouts to make themselves look like they faced harsher circumstances? What do their peers think of them, like the other swift-boat vets? Did they meet with the enemy while still being in the Navy? Did they come back and lie to Congress and swear that US soldiers were committing heinous crimes and that they were under orders to commit those actions?

Some people did serve and suffer nobly, like Senator McCain. He did none of those above-listed things. But I think he cracked or something along the line. Maybe he's just vying for political power. Who knows. It is just sad though. His definition of "torture" is being committed daily in "boot camp" for the military. Standing for long periods of time. Walking numerous miles with a heavy burden. Being yelled at and intimidated. BULL$*^T!! I would NOT call any of what I went through in Basic Training as torture in any way.

People say the current administration is "evil and twisted". Let's talk about all the dissenters of the Clinton administration who ended up being suicided in Fort Marcy Park (sp?). Let's talk about the criminal indictments against the president (whitewater?). Let's talk about firing everyone in the travel office so they could get their own people in who wouldn't ask questions. Let's talk about taking campaign contributions from countries who want us dead. Let's talk about FBI files collected on their political adversaries. Let's talk about Sandy Berger stealing documents (and planting others?) from the National Archives. Let's talk about the president lying under oath and suborning purjury. Let's talk about his contempt for the Constution and nominating someone to the Supreme Court who was former counsel for the ACLU who is one of the leading anti-American organizations today. Contempt for the Constitution in handing over power to the UN. Gutting the military. I could go on and on.

Do I agree with the current administration? In some ways. I am extremely angry that he has not veto'd ANY spending bills. I am not happy that he has only now started to talk about securing our borders. I am not happy that our tax cuts (it is MY DAMN MONEY that I EARN) are not permanent. I am angry that he signed that horribly unconstitutional "campaign finance reform" instead of vetoing it (talk about freedom of speech problems). Of course, who crafted it? McCain (who i discussed earlier) and Feingold.

Let's talk about the Constitution. The founders were very clear: Any rights and privileges not explicitly listed were left to the STATES and not to the Federal Government. Somehow we've ended up with "rights" that don't seem to be listed anywhere in the Constitution. The founders were very careful with their words in writing it. Shouldn't we be very careful when we read those words? If they picked their words carefully, shouldn't we be careful when we start reading extra stuff into those words? The founders did not write those words expecting people later to read into the "penundrum" of the Constitution. Good grief. How much more obtuse could you be? It is either listed or it is not. And if it is not listed in the Constitution, there is a process to make it be listed. If people want certain "rights" to be either granted or taken away, follow the process. Amend the Constitution. Don't warp it.

(continued in the next post)

Dec 22, 05 - 09:22 pm Comment from: losers

(continued from previous post)

What is a "neocon"? Is it the latest word to try to denegrate conservatives? I guess it is an attempt to come up with something to combat the term "liberal" which liberals despise. They despise is so much that they now call themselves "moderates" or "centrists" or "progressives" or something of that sort. Anything to keep from being called a liberal.

Back in the 80's liberals wanted the Soviet Union to win the Cold War. It was obvious in the way they fawned over the Soviet Premiers and how they slammed their own country every chance they got. When the Soviet Block Countries got the chance, which side did THEY pick? They were the ones who knew just how wonderful things were in the utopian Communist society. They were the ones basking in the freedoms. So they chose to LEAVE that "wonderful" form of government. Surprise surprise.

Today the liberals want the "insurgents" to win because they're just misunderstood and the United States (specifically Bush) made them into terrorists to begin with. These "insurgents" are killing their own peoples by strapping bombs to someone (often a woman or child or a Gen-Y'er who knows everything) and sending them to a public and crowded place so they can blow themselves up and kill or maime lots of other people. These people don't want a representative government. They want a totalitarian regime. Where were the N.O.W. people standing up for women's rights in Iraq before the invasion? How many rights did women have then? They were property. No protest there.

GET OFF THE CRACK YOUR SMOKING. IT'S BAD SHIT, AND ITS SCRAMBLED AN OTHERWISE INTELLIGENT BRAIN.

Nice effort. The crack you're smoking has caused you to use the posessive rather than the conjunction.

MW: effort

And it appears the crack I'm smoking caused me to type conjunction rather than contraction.

To Shadowself:
Great posts. Would like to correct one item though. The President Clinton incident was proven flase years ago. At least that was the official statement put out by the airport (St Louis I think). Yes he did get a haircut aboard Air Force One, but it in no way interfered with air traffic. Its been repeated so often it has taken on a air of truth which is not deserved.

To to gpank:
Your remarks are completely off the mark. None of those gentlemen are "defeated". Kerry's awards have been investigated and remain valid - besides, you can't put yourself in for an award in the military, only your superior can. After initial submission, the action is investigated for quite some time before final decision, which often reduces the level of award received.
Cleland did indeed receive his wounds due to a friendly incident. A fellow soldier dropped his live grenade. Cleland attempted to pick it up and get rid of it to save the lives of his men. It exploded causing his injuries. He also received the Silver and Bronze Stars during his tour in Vietnam, came back to the States, recovered then successfully served in the U.S. Senate - we should all be so "defeated".
Try again.

I'd like to thank you guys for reminding me why I tend to stay away from Mac users and illustrating just how the US got the politicians it so richly deserves.

"As for Cheney's iPod recharge prohibiting mainstream reporters from filing their stories, we say, "Go iPod!""

Well, yes, you would; you're an idiot.

Nothing personal guys; but I see idiots trying to point score while utterly missing the point and I'm bound to say something.

Regarding the run-on conspiracy theory rant by 'losers':

Like I said - "Mental Illness".

Thanks for proving my point, bud. And don't forget to ask Santa for the lithium.

g-spankyoself, you jumped on that one fast.

as for the name, my name is steve, i just don't want folks to think i'm trying to be cute by, you know, posing as Jobs.

As for your comment about attention, I'm sure I don't post half as much as you. So that comment reflect more on you then me. And I may joke but I'm just trying to keep it light. I refrain from spewing vile & vulgar insults. Something you do often.

"GET OFF THE CRACK YOUR SMOKING. IT'S BAD SHIT, AND ITS SCRAMBLED AN OTHERWISE INTELLIGENT BRAIN."

Hey, you don't need to do that. I've often thought you state your points pretty well, with some thought.

As for me? I can't wait to ride my 2 stroke kawi out on the Sacto river as soon as it warms up a bit. Got to get in as much as poss till they ban em completely. That's how I relax.
A bit off subject, but I'm waiting for a report to finish running and the mind is starting... to.. drift.

Night all!

MDN "editors" are faggots.

Dec 23, 05 - 10:17 am Comment from: G Spank

Well Steev I figured he needed some kind of wake up call. The guy needs to make some friends that are "liberals" to find out the truth - most "liberals" are very nice people who share the same goals for this country as most "conservatives". They want peace and prosperity for the USA - they just have a different approach. All I can say is beware of people that want you to hate "liberals". They are the ones who polarize this country for political gain.

I do not spew vile and vulgar insults often. When I am attacked in such a way (OFTEN) I sometimes have to get a little dirty to show the children a mirror. And yes, I say children, because that's how many people argue their points here at MDN. You tried to say that I wished I was a woman. What does that say about you? Think about it.

Anyway, I do think that if you and I met randomly we'd probably think we were both "good people". Chat rooms like this can bring out the worst in people. I do sincerely hope you have a good Christmas!

I have learned one thing from this thread, neocons some of the most sell-righteous thin-skinned little crybabies that ever walked the earth.

Oh, and they cant smell their own shit, even though they are sitting in it.

Sheeesh..

Dec 23, 05 - 12:40 pm Comment from: Steev

G-Spanky,
I was kidding about the women thing.

Yes it's hard to debate when you have a limited/no idea of a person's background. Chatrooms/forums are notorious for this because all a person is is a name & line of text. These forums don't support a person's arguments or credibility.

That's why it's so easy for people to flame, marginalize and categorize each other in these forums. They are too impersonal. I'm sure there's more that we'd agree on then disagree, politics & religion are just two subject that folks get so passionate about.

Okay, group hug everyone!
