Vice President Cheney’s Apple iPod recharge takes precedence aboard Air Force II
Thursday, December 22, 2005 - 08:39 AM EDT

"Vice President Dick Cheney didn't suffer for comfort on the cavernous cargo plane that he rode into Iraq and Afghanistan this week," Nedra Pickler writes for The Associated Press. "The Air Force loaded the plane with the 'silver bullet,' a mobile home in the sky strapped down in the middle of the belly. The accommodations included sleeping and working quarters that protected him from the noise and cold of the cargo hold during a more than five-hour flight into Baghdad... The rest of his traveling party was not so lucky. Cheney's senior staff and junior aides were assigned to a cramped three rows of seats in front of the bullet, while reporters and Secret Service agents had to sit in jump seats along the side with a view of Cheney's stainless steel exterior walls... Despite the noise and seating conditions on the C-17, Cheney's staff eventually was able to nod off after days of exhaustive travel. Cheney emerged from his more spacious quarters at one point to pose for a picture standing in front of several rows of his dozing aides."

Pickler reports, "The vice president is an iPod fan, and keeping it charged is a priority for his staff. Normally that isn't an issue, even when he's flying around the world. Air Force II is equipped with outlets in each row of seats. But when Dick Cheney was traveling home overnight Wednesday from his diplomatic mission, most of the outlets went on the fritz. Working passengers began lining up their laptops to share the power from a couple of working outlets — particularly the reporters who urgently needed to prepare their articles to transmit during a quick refueling stop in England. But when Cheney said his iPod needed to be recharged, it took precedent above all else and dominated one precious outlet for several hours. The vice president's press staff intervened so a reporter could use the outlet for 15 minutes to charge a dead laptop, but then the digital music device was plugged back in. That way, Cheney got his press coverage and his music, too."

MacDailyNews Take: Newsflash for Nedra: That's right, honey, you're not as important as the Vice President of the United States of America. If you want so badly to be the one who gets to ride in the "silver bullet," quit writing wire stories for AP and go get elected. As for Cheney's iPod recharge prohibiting mainstream reporters from filing their stories, we say, "Go iPod!" It's just too bad that Cheney's iPod couldn't have somehow stopped the publishing of the majority of Nitpickler's particularly meaningless pile of words (we do appreciate the iPod stuff, but didn't like having to wade through the whining about how the U.S. Vice President gets better accommodations aboard planes than do beat reporters).

Note: We believe that politicians are nuts to be politicians nowadays. Thanks to the media and the political climate today, politicians quickly become twisted caricatures that bear no resemblance to human beings. Regardless of your political party, try to remember that they are actual people. The politicians that you "despise" are almost always much nicer and warmer than you'd want to believe and the ones you "love" almost always have many more flaws than you'd ever want to admit.

It's a special edition iPod that doubles as a pacemaker. No wonder he was concerned about keeping it charges.

P.S. Since it's inevitable in these forums, let the liberal/conservative bashing begin! It's quite entertaining.

so let's see... the vice president of the united states is supposed to accomodate some whining hack so he can file his pathetic drivel with his left-wing rag back home? only in America does the press have this concept of exclusive priviledge! without question, the vp iPod has priority over some hack's dead 'doze laptop. if i was him, there'd never be any "press" accomodations in any conveyance of mine. they could fly commerical, and their rag could pay for it. if i felt like speaking to them, between listening to my iPod and my meetings, they'd be lucky.

Dec 22, 05 - 10:39 am Comment from: gw

double an asshat and an idiot (including his aide) since the iPod could have just been pugged into a USB or Firewire port on any laptop and charged.

"Newsflash for Nedra: That's right, honey, you're not as important as the Vice President of the United States of America."

More important than the Vice President? Perhaps not, but definitely more important than an iPod. Sorry but MDN's take is way off. I would much rather get news and reports than the assurance that Cheney gets to listen to his iPod. Personally, elitist, capitalist BS is not one of the things that I'm a particular fan of.

Dec 22, 05 - 10:54 am Comment from: twdldee

I bet you he just listens to "Giovenezza" over and over and over and over again.

Dec 22, 05 - 11:00 am Comment from: justify

Nedra had a legitimate point. Did Cheney really need to use an outlet for several hours? Isn't one hour enough to recharge most of the battery? I can't believe MDN is defending that attitude. That attitude and the people that defend it is what is wrong with politics.

Dec 22, 05 - 11:02 am Comment from:

I don't know why Dick VADER just didn't plug the iPOD in to one of his own electrical receptacles?

MDN Take: "It's just too bad that Cheney's iPod couldn't have somehow stopped the publishing of the majority of Nitpickler's particularly meaningless pile of words"

Hmmm...it almost sounds like MDN is promoting censorship. Actually, that's not all that surprising since MDN is in the habit of deleting unfavorable posts.

Yeah, MDN is all for censorship of meaningless articles. It is self-evident that the V.P. of the U.S.A gets the best accommodations on a plane. We don't need a news article about it.

Dec 22, 05 - 11:12 am Comment from: anon

Mike,
So you speak for MDN, and you say that MDN does favor censorship? Two questions: Since when did MDN get to determine what is meaningful to the rest of the population? If it is so meaningless, why is it quoted by MDN, or is only iPod/Apple news meaningful as MDN implies?

Dec 22, 05 - 11:12 am Comment from: Shadowself

I certainly hope MDN's take is pure sarcasm.

The VP could have been doing many, many necessary things other than listening to his iPod.

With regard to, "They quickly become twisted caricatures that bear no resemblance to human beings. Regardless of your political party, try to remember that they are actual people. The politicians that you 'despise' are almost always much nicer and warmer than you'd want to believe and the ones you "love" almost always have many more flaws than you'd ever want to admit." I've presonally met many of these politicians. I've known (and know) a few. Many of them ARE twisted caricatures of human beings. People that don't have polarized opinions don't get elected. It's been that way for decades.

The real issue with the VP is that he's been a Washington insider for a LONG time. He knows were most of the skeletons are hidden. He probably has more real political insider power than the President. People are truly afraid of him. When he even suggests something many people take it as an absolute command. It could have been as simple as him saying in front of a staffer, "Damn, my iPod's dead." and the staffer took it upon himself or herself to get it charged no matter what. Conversely, he could have ordered it charged, or else.

The real question to the VP's staff is, "Why does the VP only have ONE iPod?" If there were two or more the staff could make sure the playlist on each of them is identical to each of the others. They could also make sure that at least one (or more) is always charged.

The VP's staff taking over the power outlet for the VP's iPod is just as stupid as Clinton having Air Force One sit at an airport while he had a hair cut inside it! (For those who don't know: If the President is inside Air Force One and it is at a commercial airport ALL airport traffic is halted -- just in case he needs to make an emergency takeoff. It does not matter what he's doing inside. The rule still stands.)

Dec 22, 05 - 11:14 am Comment from: Please, Just STFU

No, the attitude that's wrong is taking this sort of stuff way too seriously "justify." That Nedra's piece even made it anywhere is proof of MDN's point.

Dec 22, 05 - 11:16 am Comment from: xavi

to the angry lefties above:

have you people ever seen a superior/subordinate relationship?

The superior makes clear to the subordinate she wants his iPod charged at all times. This was probably communicated months or years ago. The subordinate complies, within the powers of the office.

The superior is busy with her own affairs and most likely never finds out about mundane stuff such as working outlets etc.

This is true in business, in the Chinese commie party, in government, in NGO's, in the Catholic Church and even in John Kerry's office.

Sheez, do you people have any understanding of how the world works?

Dec 22, 05 - 11:18 am Comment from: Fred Mertz

anon,

As a longtime poster here, I have never had a post deleted, regardless of whether my opinion agreed with MDN's or not. The only posts that I have ever seen deleted (deletions are rare) were spammers (before the Magic Word was instituted), people who post multiple duplicate or exceptionally similar posts, totally off-topic posts, and the replacement of a certain word with "fsck" for MDN noobs who don't know the tradition.

In fact, I am constantly surprised at how open MDN is and the "anything goes" attitude.

If your posts are being deleted, why not email and inquire as to why this keeps happening to you? Because you're doing something that isn't kosher.

If MDN has such a "habit" of deleting "unfavorable" posts, then why is yours still there?

Dec 22, 05 - 11:19 am Comment from: LinuxGuy

First it's President Bush, then VP Cheney. Let the political shrieking continue. This is fabulous free advertising for the iPod and Apple. No matter which side wins the argument, left or right, the real winner is Apple. And my money is on Apple, literally.

Mr. Allen, good point!

Dec 22, 05 - 11:25 am Comment from: Mozfan

I think MDN's take was on the nose. With all the history I've read on politicians (surely not as much as some here), I have found it to be true that the person and the image are rarely reconciled.

As for the whining reporter...

She knew she signed on to cover the VP.
She knew she was flying on Air Force 2.
She knew the trip was for him, not her.
She knew she might not have access to power.

If she wants to have a good supply of power and lots of comfort, she could have stayed home and covered something else.

My wife is a newspaper editor, but she used to be a reporter and I can tell you it is not the most glamourous job in the world. However, most reporters used to understand that they are not important to a story. More and more, as reporters make themselves more a part of every story, we are bound to see them wonder why they aren't treated the same as the person they are covering.

This reporter has no reason to complain. If this were a story in Rolling Stone about a huge rock band and the reporter complained about not having any of the drugs or groupies that the band got, or about no one pulling the browns out of her M&Ms;, we would all be laughing at her.

And I doubt those who say how sorry Cheney is would be as hard on Gene Simmons (lots of groupies) or David Crosby (tons of drugs) or the Rolling Stones (both).

The reporters are not the story. They should remember that. It is not their job to tell me how unfair the seating or power usage on the plane was. It is not their job to convince me how uncaring VP Cheney is. It is not their job to persuade me that the reporters covering trips are treated unfairly or abused.

Tell me what happened, I'll figure out what I think about it.

~M

PS- if anything this showed how compassionate Cheney (or at least his staff) is since they gave up the outlet for a laptop at all.
smile

Dec 22, 05 - 11:27 am Comment from: B-Sabre

The not-so-obvious solution:

1) Plug laptop into outlet.

2) Plug iPod into USB port of laptop. Even if iTunes isn't present on the laptop, it should be able to charge the laptop.

(Hmmm, why doesn't Apple put a self-loading version of iTunes (of both flavors) onto the iPod when they ship?)

Worried about the newsie sneaking a peek into the Veep's music habits (probably no Kayne West in it, I bet)? Have an aid babysit the laptop while its charging.

Fred,
"The only posts that I see deleted..."

Well, to begin with, it's usually pretty hard to see posts that have been deleted, unless you're in the habit of saving webpages and then comparing them.

A good example is of a post from several threads earlier. I won't bother to link it because obviously you're not going to see the post that was deleted, but it was neither a spammer, duplicate post, similar post, or off-topic post. In fact, it had everything to do with MDN's article.

A note about reader comment deletion:

• Duplicate posts may be removed to save space. There's no need to keep adding the same information over and over in a thread.
• Off-topic posts may be removed.
• Corrections of spelling, missing links, etc. may be removed after we've made the correction (and noted the correction below the article) in order to eliminate confusion.
• Use "fsck" in place of you-know-what - it's an MDN tradition. We try to replace you-know-what with "fsck" whenever possible.

Everything else goes. Deleted posts are a rarity. If you think we're great or full of something or anything else relating to the article or the "MacDailyNews Take," post it and it will stay posted.

I agree, why would anyone wanna go through the Republican slander machine to try and be president? I mean, dude, they will take down people from their own party that lost their ability to walk fighting for this country in Vietnam in a heartbeat. Character assasination, the Republicans are the pro's at that to be sure. And guess what, most American idiots eat it up. It's sick and depraved.

Dec 22, 05 - 12:22 pm Comment from: MacJack

At least MDN knows the difference between "precedence" and "precedent". Nedra sure don't (how'd she ever get onto Air Force II anyway??)

Dec 22, 05 - 12:23 pm Comment from: Old Stogey

Thanks, MDN for a decent and reasonable take on this.

You wrote it knowing you'd get flamed by a few of your less intelligent posters. And while remaining politically neutral (unlike those who couldn't wait to jump off the monkey bars to call you names here), you put a brainless "news" story in it's place.

(News flash: "US VP travels in comfort while crusty reporters sit on chairs and have to talk extra-loud." Dang... it's fun to picture the girl sitting there hour after hour, staring angry holes through the side of the Vice-Box while smacking the steel floor with her high-heel, Marisa Tomei-style. "TAP, TAP, TAP..." 18 hours and counting. If the AP idiot has a story, it's that neither she or her betters were bright enough to supply her with an extra battery or two for her cheesy PC laptop!)

To MDN: Nice work, today and all year long, guys (and gals). I'm a fan.

Merry Christmas.

As a former reporter, I take exception to the MDN slant. The reporters on the plane were WORKING! The Veep and his staff were SLEEPING. It's not like they needed the outlet to power a phone (or other equipment) for part of the VP's duties. Taking over an electrical outlet for hours for the Veep's iPod is just the latest example of the arrogant style of this administration.

One thing I've learned about dealing with reporters is that if you treat them like dirt in person, they'll return the favor in print.
