UK woman narrowly survives Xbox fire; users report Xbox 360 ‘crashing like mad’
Wednesday, November 23, 2005 - 03:06 PM EST

"So, the Xbox 360's been available for, what, 15 minutes, and already the crash reports are streaming in. According to postings on Xbox-Scene and other fan sites, some early adopters are discovering that waiting on line in the cold for two years to snag a box was the least of their problems: the game consoles are allegedly crashing during a variety of games and reporting a range of error messages," Marc Perton reports for Engadget.

"A quick look on our forums (more, more and more) seems to indicate he's not the only one. Several of our members seems to get crashing 360s. It doesn't seem to be related to a specific game, as we get reports of the Xbox 360 crashing with several games. And it's not all the same Error-number either (E79, E74, E64, real crashes, ...). I quickly checked over at TeamXbox and they also have a large thread and poll about defective Xbox 360s," XanTium reports for Xbox-Scene.com.

In somewhat related news, The Register reports that a UK woman was "was pulled unconscious from her house by two strangers after succumbing to smoke generated by a faulty Xbox... Anglesey fire and rescue spokesman Dave Evans confirmed the fire was caused by a 'fault in an Xbox game machine' left on standby. Back in February, Microsoft recalled 14.1m Xbox power cables shipped into Europe before 13 January, 2004 and in other territories before 23 October, 2003, as we previously reported. MS admitted to '30 or so reports from users suffering minor burns, singed upholstery or scorched carpets as a result of power lead malfunctions.'"

games are a waste of time. Sitting in front of the tv for hours drooling while damaging the ligaments in my thumbs

Nov 23, 05 - 05:09 pm Comment from: Honker

what does this have to do with apple?

Nov 23, 05 - 05:09 pm Comment from: Rasterbator

And how much did all these losers pay for their xBox?

$399 + Tax + Shipping + y($50) = xBox

The variable "y" in this equation equals "number of games purchased".

The variable "x" in this equation equals "Crash".

All hail the almighty CrashBox from Micro$oft. These losers could have built a PC that does everything and more and purchased the PC versions of these games and saved a Micro$hit load of money in the process.

LMAO

"if MS is that bad why Apple still can not beat it?"::First, it's 'cannot'. Second, you are focusing your "reality" in the wrong direction, most people will be like nature. They act like Entropy, they take the easiest route. But with Microsuck, this route is not the eastiest. They think that they are getting a bargin, but in truth they are spending little money on little value.

They get:
-- a cheap computer with cheap components
-- an ancient OS that is only cobbled, aka patched, together to make work with every update--of which NEEDS to be patched daily once relased
-- takes an enormous amount of learning to understand
-- is flaky when it does work
-- gives a false sense of comfort in the fact that there are "others" out there, aka Stockholm Syndrome
-- headaches, stress, illness from stress
-- bewilderment at the fact that this is actually a comptuer
-- brainwashing into believing that there is no alternative (dead wrong on that point, hence this and MANY other sites devoted to Mac info.)
-- considerable time investment on learning, optimizing, and defending there "computer"
-- daily updating of virus, spyware, malware protection
-- lost $$$ on the cost of protection software
-- lost time fixing the "computer" when it could be used towards productivity

Shall I go on? These are my observations of what people have gone through, not readings from the countless sites that can back up each statement here.

MDN MW: "expensive":: It truly is expensive to operate Winblows.

It's a built in feature. A new level of play. Find the secret hidden message. It's there, just look real hard.

Dumb ass gamers.

Nov 23, 05 - 05:51 pm Comment from: mike k.

macnut222 -- you're getting more articles posted here than i have been recently. You better watch it man, or i'm going to send WOW MDN over to live under your house.

On a related note, has site traffic increased here? We seem to have sprouted a new, much more generic, brand of troll in the last few months?

Nov 23, 05 - 05:55 pm Comment from: Stuart

WOW MDN,

From your use of derogatory language - "fags" - I would guess you are a right wing, narrow minded, homophobic, bigot who couldn't even point to to Britain on the map, let alone spell it without the help of a spell checker.

My second guess is that you are American.

Which reminds me of a favourite sport Australians like to play - Where's that country? Show Yanks a map of the world and ask them where a country is. Then die laughing as they point to Russia when asked to point to the U.S.A., or Australia as Iraq.

True to form, they make them "good enough" - good enough for suckers that is!

Yet another great solution from Microsoft - the Xbox 360!

Will folks ever learn - M$$$$$ IS ALL ABOUT MONEY NOT CUSTOMER SUPPORT AND GOOD WILL!

HOLD OFF YOU GUYS - JOB'S WIL COME AROUND SOONER OR LATER AND OFFER A iGAME SOLUTION AND THE WOULD WILL COME A RUNNING

Nov 23, 05 - 06:14 pm Comment from: JB

And you aren't narrow minded and stereotypical yourself there Stuart? I know most people from Australia aren't, so I won't lump all Aussies in with you...

Nov 23, 05 - 06:24 pm Comment from: Kenny

This is what happens when you're dumb enough to want to be 'cool' and be one of the first to own a new product. Better to wait a while, even one week will do, to see if there are going to be problems with a product.
And I'll throw Apple into this hole as well. If people had waited a while after the nanos release and then realised that it easily prone to scratches, then they may have thought twice about purchasing. Best to wait until bugs are ironed out before leaping in. But on another note, you'd think MS would have tested this new machine before releasing it. And I don't mean play the first few levels of each game and say yeah it works.

Nov 23, 05 - 06:50 pm Comment from: Macaday

And the Microsoft downward spiral continues...

Nov 23, 05 - 06:50 pm Comment from: Shadowself

Some 'net sites are reporting polling almost as high as 15% failure rates. Even accounting for anti-Microsoft trolls at those sites the real failure rates could be as high as 10%.

Apple had a problem with the iPod nano screens with about 0.1% of them being truly bad (in the first groups shipped).

Because of this there were loud screams of "recall" and "class action lawsuit". There actually is a lawsuit filed for class action status (don't know if the status was granted or not). This is about a < 1% issue.

Why are we not hearing the same outrage and demands for recalls and class action lawsuits over what could very well be a > 10% issue?

(Probably for the same reason Apple was sued over repetitive stress injuries [even though Apple was the only company to ship a split keyboard which was individually adjustable] while Microsoft was not.)

Nov 23, 05 - 07:01 pm Comment from: Macaday

Agree Shadowself. I believe the nature of the organisations and their respective 'followers' are to do with that. Microsoft goes for the jugular and thereby encourages others to do so too. Apple gets on with the innovation.

I also agree with the posts about trolling levels on MDN - definitely up on my view of past experience. I suggest its the kneejerk 'attack is the best form of defence' mechanism.

Nov 23, 05 - 07:21 pm Comment from: Evgeny

To MasterMacNikon,

In brief I see your point about why MS is still dominating the market as follows - public is stupid to tell that Apple is better.

I generally agree as I have switched and can compare both but if the customer is stupid it shall be much more easy for Apple to make them switch. Nevertheless Apple still fails to do it. Sad but true.

PS about my spelling as it that issue has been raised more then once here - if u wanna have my ideas in a less imperfect written form u may switch to my native language which is Russian. Let me know when u learn it well enough to be able to keep up a primitive conversation:)

just looked up Tiger dict for "cannot": cannot |kəˈnät; ˈkanˌät| contraction of can not.
Looks like before approaching Russian u have to master English first.

Nov 23, 05 - 07:36 pm Comment from: William Gates

It's obvious to me that you Mac idiots can't see innovation when you see it. What you thought were crashes in IN FACT a new Microsoft innovation that we call LardBGone v1.0. In order to help stop the obesity epidemic in America, the console will stop playing after some time so that you will go work out. HOW'S THAT for innovation! Hey, my pal Steve Ballmers lost 10 pounds already!

Oh, and what you thought was a fire is in fact another Microsoft innovation called RealEffects v1.1. Instead of just a computer generated image of a fire on the screen, RealEffects produces a REAL fire to enhance game play. That woman in the UK probably put her Xbox next to a flammable source, which we CLEARLY explained in page 1,693 of the Xbox Quick Start Manual in BOLD 2 point font.

Hey I beat Apple to the punch this time! HA HA HA!

Nov 23, 05 - 07:39 pm Comment from: Every game console crashes sometimes

Why should the the X-Box 360 be the first perfect one?

Are these crashes more common than with other brands? You really can't tell.

Nov 23, 05 - 08:00 pm Comment from: Max

[Do you believe everything you read on the web? ]

Like, Windows has 87% marketshare?

Nov 23, 05 - 08:05 pm Comment from: Max

[celebrating someone's failure is a not a good character trait.]

Like, always mentioning the Macs' 6% marketshare - as opposed to the mighty 86.7% marketshare of Window?

Nov 23, 05 - 08:07 pm Comment from: MasterMacNikon

Evgeny, why start with Russian? It more likely seems that the asian languages are more appropriate.

And it's grammar, not spelling.

Final word.

Nov 23, 05 - 08:23 pm Comment from: Max

[Are these crashes more common than with other brands? You really can't tell.]

I can tell.

I've owned every Nintendo system, less the Virtual GB. NONE of them EVER crashed. I have PSone and PS2, no crashes. Sega GameGear, no crashes.

Your naivete seems more affectation.

Nov 23, 05 - 09:20 pm Comment from: Evgeny

To Max:

My mentioning of the market share was in response to the MDN take and stupid "MS sucks/Apple rocks" posts inspired by it.

I must have been pretty obvious! If you just like to say a sort of a "Final word" and do not care about the validity of your arguments add a respective note to your post so that we can skip it.

PS
if u feel comfortable with the Apple's one digit percent share be silent about it. I do not like that miserable figure and would like it to go up. Size does matter:)

Nov 23, 05 - 10:12 pm Comment from: Less is More

The irony is that Microsoft will lose money on every Xbox sold, the parts alone cost something like $374 assuming bulk discounts. The plan is to make money on software, of course -- Microsoft's (cough) forte.

Microsoft can afford it, so I'd advise every Xbox buyer to take the product back and ask for a refund, saying it is completely unstable. Then come back six months later and buy Xbox XP [for extra protection]. And don't forget to get Xbox Defender when it comes out [not the game].

11:52:36
A dialog box opens saying a patch is available for your Xbox. The upgrade is highly recommended for stability.

11:53:10
You click OK.

12:15:08
Still downloading.

13:00:03
Still downloading.

15:00:08
A dialog box tells you your hard drive is full. (You're out shopping.)

16:25:10
Your central heating trips off.

16:28:57
Your pet canary dies.

16:30:00
Your neighbor alerts the Fire Dept. about a burning smell coming from your house.

17:45:28
You return from shopping to find your street blocked by Fire Dept. tape and a Detour sign.

Nov 23, 05 - 10:27 pm Comment from: Evgeny

Less is More
there is no irony here; in this market everyone sells the game box with a loss but earns on games.

Nov 23, 05 - 10:34 pm Comment from: Less is More

True, Evgeny, but the irony I imagined would come from having to take the boxes back.

Nov 23, 05 - 10:44 pm Comment from: Evgeny

if they take it back they will have a loss in reverse; not sure I would be a profit but it is definitely not a loss:)

Sorry for being an idyll breaker here I just very much want Cells by Apple and am annoyed that they have not released it yet while MS (with all its flaws) has been having Excel for ages. Plus I am having problems with syncing my KeyChain with .Mac [for several months]

MacTech84

Do u just cut and paste that "get out of this site" mantra each time u see a post u disagree with?

It is obvious that that WOW guy just wanted to draw your attention to the fact celebrating someone's failure is a not a good character trait.

I would even add to that that that type of behavior is typical to someone who is not confident in his/er own power. I assume that the Apple's market share worries u subconsciously. I would agree that until it remains as tiny as it is there is good a fair reason for any Mac fan to be worried but that does not justify celebrations of other's failures (at least in the area where Apple is not competing with Microsoft); I hate to say that but u seem to have lost the sense of reality here - if MS is that bad why Apple still can not beat it?"

Here is a cut and paste for ya, I just said if you dont' like it don't read it. Everything in here makes you just look like an ass, if you are a PeeCee user what are you doing in a mac forum? And I am not worried about the Mac market share, I think you might be worried that Macs might take over. In either case I don't care about you or your points cause there are none. WOW MDN didn't draw me out, I just made one small remark that apparantly you took to a whole new level. Is it just me or does every PC diehard think Mac Users are not confident in themselves? Well I said it before, and I will say it again. Have fun with your virus scans, spyware blockers, and general blue screens, while I work with a machine that produces results, and doesn't create headaches 3 - 4 times a day. But probably more!!!

Nov 23, 05 - 10:55 pm Comment from: Evgeny

to MacTech
I am on a Mac:) Thee mere fact that I do not follow the MDN's stupid takes "A rocks/M sucks" means nothing; not all Mac users are that stupid.

I worry about the Mac share for obvious reasons - the larger it is the better off are Mac users; my problem with your and the similar posts is that they hurt Apple 1) distract potential switches [when the see that u write BS against MS they will never believe the true stuff about Apple and Mac posted here...) and 2) make the entire community to struggle with a perception that if u are on a Mac u are a blind and arrogant idiot:)

Nov 23, 05 - 11:01 pm Comment from: Evgeny

BTW I also do not work for Music Labels:)
I am just a Mac user quite different from u:

Nov 23, 05 - 11:05 pm Comment from: MacTech84

Well if the name didn't give it away I am a technician. I prefer Macs for obvious reasons. Once I set one up I am done. I have a few clients that have PC's and I continuosuly get calls saying please come fix my machine. I am not blind nor arrogant. However I am apparantly starting to piss you off. I have made my mind up about Macintosh and I know it is the superior platform regardless what anyone can tell me. And if anyone has a right mind they would not look at the forum to see the (oh here is another cut and paste) "the entire community to struggle" they would realize the true (here is another cut and paste) "BS" comes out when users like yourself and WOW MDN decide to post (and final cut and paste) "BS" in these forums. Oh and I glad I am quite different from you! Have a nice day =)

Nov 23, 05 - 11:06 pm Comment from: MacTech84

BTW:
I am starting to have fun with this... HA!

Nov 23, 05 - 11:09 pm Comment from: MasterMacNikon

Evgeny, it is a little more comforting for your admission that you are a Mac person. It is disconcerning in the fact that we, as Mac users, have to DEFEND our decision against PC bigiots who do nothing more than spew propaganda and lies; hence, THEY are the ones that are "drinking the kool-aid".

When I was attending ITT Tech, I was bombarded with hatred. I even participated in a debate for my English 2 class. Of course, he kept spewing lies that were coutnered with the facts that I presented earlier, but the time limit was expired before I could rebut.

Point is, we have such reactions becuase we have to. We must battle back for our respect in an arena where respect is only given to those who are perceived to be worthy. Ego, arrogance, and just plain stupidity are the biggest factors of this perception. Am I labeling you with these, no, not anymore. You have proven yourself to be elavated above the crowd of lemmings.

Nov 23, 05 - 11:11 pm Comment from: Evgeny

Hey technician could u help Apple to fix .Mac sync for Keychain?:)
That is the reason I am so aggressive here. I does not work for several months and there is nothing on the support site:)

Nov 23, 05 - 11:17 pm Comment from: Evgeny

a decent soft like MS Office and a good [I do not know the write term} network integration? [ smth which would allow Mac users to use there macs in the offices] would do much more then posting "MS sucks" for increasing the Apple's share; I am expecting a job offer now and I am slightly upset that if a get it I will have to use PC in the office:(

Anyway sorry again for being over aggressive.

Ok really, this is funny, your grammar does suck, but you have figured out how to use smileys. HAHAHAHA.... I am done now..... HEHEHE... I have had my fill for the night... Thanks Evgeny... hehehe

Nov 23, 05 - 11:30 pm Comment from: MasterMacNikon

I understand your aggression, but it needs to be channeled in another direction. We are not the only ones.

Unlike MacTech84, I can forgive grammar mistakes on boards when things are comprensible. And when things don't turn into verbal shouting matches.

Hence, when we all realize that we are on the same side, potential switchers will see that the Mac comunity is strong, faithfull, and alive.

Evgeny, thank you for a lively discussion.

This is what happens when you ship by date, not by product completiong, Jobs has made several statements about shipping a product when it's ready, not when people are tired of waiting for it. And the only product that I think was an early launch was OS X, and that was only early if you bought a copy, because it was all dual boot to begin with.
