Single Mac keeps company running while Windows machines fail due to Blaster worm
Wednesday, August 13, 2003 - 08:05 AM EDT

What follows is an anonymous email we received early this morning posted in its entirety:

Dear MacDailyNews,

What a day! And night. Yesterday at work, the whole place was down due to the Blaster worm. Computers freaking out more than usual, except mine. Nobody could get online to access the web or get email and the IT staff, a third of whom were on vacation, were losing their minds.

This is the same IT staff that fought me tooth and nail when I requisitioned my Apple Macintosh computer (PowerBook G4 15-inch). They said at the time that they couldn't support multiple platforms, that I wouldn't be able to access the network - all of the usual falsehoods many others experience every day. What I went through to finally gain approval for the Mac purchase I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy! But, in the end, I got my Mac.

Well, yesterday, my Mac was the only functioning computer at work. My Mac handled several important emails which resulted in sales (revenue) for the company - this would've been impossible to achieve had we been stuck in a homogenous Windows situation as IT wanted. Basically, without the Apple Mac, no business would've been conducted yesterday.

The Mac was used for the first time by several top managers to communicate with their business contacts throughout the day and into the evening. Many of these people came away with a very positive impression of the Mac and seemed bowled over by Mac OS X. The fact that the Mac just worked and all of the Windows PCs didn't was not lost on these upper management people. In fact, several have scheduled meetings with IT to figure out how to prevent such a mess in the future and one thing they seem to want is to "mix in some Macs around here for safety," as one manager put it.

So, the Mac came through with flying colors, helped make a great deal of revenue and may have gained a foothold in my company! Perhaps even the IT guys will come around now. Thought you would like to know.

Ah, the perils of a monoculture...

Maybe Apple should come up with "Genetic Diversity" campaign....

Aug 13, 03 - 10:05 am Comment from: MilwaukeeMacOPhile

Awesome, awesome, awesome... That's really all I can say.

Aug 13, 03 - 10:15 am Comment from: DrBadAss

I'ma mac user, but work in a mostly PC environment quite similiar to the one described above. I have a feeling that I will be saying "I told you so" a lot more than usual this week.

Aug 13, 03 - 10:16 am Comment from: MJ

I hope that when the day comes when workers will be begging to keep a Windows PC, we will remember this day and have mercy.

Yes, we should keep PCs around, because diversity is strength. Just ask any farmer who rotates his crops wink

Aug 13, 03 - 10:25 am Comment from: Yes MJ

Diversity is always strength! That is why we have almost every computer we have ever bought, at least one model, still in operation. You never know when you will need to insert a floppy into a System 7 Mac or one running DOS 3.11 when that is all a (cheap) client is still using. Lets hope that floppy doesn't have a virus...

Aug 13, 03 - 10:37 am Comment from: Gonzalo Cayo

You should make the IT guys apologize to you in front of everyone and admit that their wonderful PC's suck ass and the great company they worship has just raped them, again. As Nelson from the Simpsons says "HAHA!"

Aug 13, 03 - 10:50 am Comment from: David

I doubt this scare will do anything about promoting Apple. Microsoft has created its most important sales force and advocates - IT staff who wouldn't have jobs if MS actually created good software. IT staff have a vested interest in keeping Windows PCs and software.

Aug 13, 03 - 10:59 am Comment from: Al

Here is an idea for a commercial. Base it on the old Honda Commercial.

Show pictures of computers crashing because of viruses and people yelling, screaming, and companies, web servers going down.

While a voice calmly states "Apple would like to thank Windows for making Apple users so loyal..."

I know Apple would never do that, but hey it is a good idea.

Aug 13, 03 - 11:07 am Comment from: whoa boy

yeah! telling people "I told you so" will really endear them to you and your platform. why not rub their noses in it too? drag them over to their PCs and yell "Piece of Crap! Piece of Crap! THAT'S what PC stands for...ya GET IT NOW?!?!" that will surely make them buy Macs! who wouldn't respond to being made a fool of? ;->

let the Mac speak for itself. they will get it. in time.

Aug 13, 03 - 11:11 am Comment from: Mike O'Hanlon

Here's a thought. Maybe every organization should have at least one or more Mac (and one Linux box?) just for such an emergency. That's the way for Apple to gain a foothold in IT. By appealing to the executives as a safety measure!

Aug 13, 03 - 11:22 am Comment from: Nosidda

That needs to be a switcher commercial

Aug 13, 03 - 11:30 am Comment from: machead

It would be nice of Apple to use such success stories to inform the masses that Mac's work. Having a guy hit a tree and destroying his house is cute, but fighting virus/worms is reality. Think Smart Apple.

Aug 13, 03 - 11:30 am Comment from: Lance

Above all else, everyone in this guy's IT department should be fired on the spot for not having patched their systems. Hell, Microsoft provided the patch a month ago! Now, having said that, it is always nice to see all of their stupid uneducated stereotypes about Macs not working in a business environment blow up in their collective faces too.

Aug 13, 03 - 11:33 am Comment from: RavenG4

This is a wonderful story. It DEFINATELY helped the suits in his company to see the light sorta. Anwyay, it was good that his company wasn't complete disabled by this worm thanks to his trusty Mac that he fought hard to get.

Aug 13, 03 - 11:39 am Comment from: Aryugaetu

Sometimes it gets to the point, after we have stood on the highest mountain, shouted the truth until our voices are but a whimper, and shone the brightest light upon the facts right before their eyes, that we must resign with satisfaction that we have done all we can do for our struggling brothers. It is time for us to turn our efforts towards our own future, and let the others discover the truth in their own time... if they ever do.

Too many of us expend tremendous effort to grasp market share, horde Microsoft-like bank accounts, or find flaws merely to say "I do you so." I think it is a waste to try to teach those that refuse to listen (regardless of their reasons). Let's direct our efforts into a more positive direction by innovating, advancing, and supporting technologies in our little corner of the universe, and welcome the weary and beaten traveler from afar seeking a better life.

Aug 13, 03 - 11:46 am Comment from: when will the rest of the world.....

figure it out?

Aug 13, 03 - 11:59 am Comment from: NoPC Zone

They say that Macs cost more (incorrect)
I say you get what you pay for...sometimes

Aug 13, 03 - 12:08 pm Comment from: ershler

You know, I'm sick to death of all the chumps (many of them"jounalists") who say that the reason viruses etc all are not written for the Mac is because the market share is below 4% (blah, blah, blah). One would think that if it could be done, without spending a life time to it, many hackers would accept the challenge.
No, Macs don't get attacked because it is a very difficult thing to do. Attacking a Windows system is like trying to find holes is swiss cheese.

Aug 13, 03 - 12:09 pm Comment from: DoctorB

Macintosh...
It just...
works!

Aug 13, 03 - 12:09 pm Comment from: BiGdOg

Oh, stop it already. Good grief - ok, so, Macs are perfect (NOT).

And my Chevy is better than your Ford. Same old story, but no new news.

Mac owners, you know I really appreciate your position, but isn't this whole Mac vs. PC thing getting old? The whole technology world is caught up in this pathetic one-upmanship game and all for what? Bragging rights? Big deal.

In the grand scheme of things, it's just a job. It has nothing to do with how we'll raise our children or if they'll even have a decent place to live by the time we're done trashing the place. People are still starving all over the world, our soldiers are still getting killed every day, and people are still killing each other just because they're pissed off.

How important is Mac vs. PC now?

Enough already. Get back to work. There are viruses to clean.

Aug 13, 03 - 12:10 pm Comment from: steve

And this particular attack wasn't even well constructed .. it is likely that some attacks in the future will be (imagine slammer with a more evil payload)..

At our place the high level managers were showing off software products to a potentially huge European customer on Monday when most of the XP machines became -- well - unreliable. The customer was curious that we even used Windows for what were supposed to be robust and secure applications (our CEO was publically humiliated when the customer asked him if he knew about linux, open bsd and OS X...)

Three of the five person MIS team was fired later today after it became clear they knew about the problem and hadn't patched everything.

Our company is pretty dumb though .. I told the CEO that we needed some diversity and my PowerBook (my own PB that I bring in every day) was unaffected. He huffed "Apples are toys.."

sigh

Aug 13, 03 - 12:13 pm Comment from: Scott

Daivid hit the nail on the head with his statement.

" Microsoft has created its most important sales force and advocates - IT staff who wouldn't have jobs if MS actually created good software. IT staff have a vested interest in keeping Windows PCs and software."

This is the big scam.

Aug 13, 03 - 12:29 pm Comment from: R.V

Well, this is one day where we are likely NOT to see any Wintel trolls adding their FUD to our threads! LOL!

All I can say is that it couldn't have happened to a more DESERVING bunch! ;o)

"Mac owners, you know I really appreciate your position, but isn't this whole Mac vs. PC thing getting old? The whole technology world is caught up in this pathetic one-upmanship game and all for what? Bragging rights? Big deal."

Well, considering our platform of choice gets berated daily in the computer and mainstream press and assaulted my misinformed IDIOTS even here on a GASP...MAC FORUM. I would say we have just a wee bit of a right to RUB your noses in the current (and I must say hilarious) worm attack.

As the old saying goes...

People who live in glass houses should not throw stones. ;o)

Aug 13, 03 - 12:44 pm Comment from: Scotty

Cheap sells. And as long as a PC costs half of what a mac does, people will put up with anything... including virii that turn their harddrives to mush etc. etc.

The only way around this is a tower version of the eMac. But thats for another thread.

I support a dozen PCs here at work, and luckily none were affected. I couldnt get my boss to buy a mac for anything, its just too expensive even with a hard sell and this kind of situation in the pc world...

Aug 13, 03 - 12:50 pm Comment from: Seahawk

The problem is not the Mac vs PC war. The problem is that Mac users are SICK of stupid PC users bragging about the marvels of their PC and still knowing nothing about Apple computers and OS X.

Especially is annoying when they play smartass boy and come out with their condescending "Mac owners, you know I really appreciate your position, but isn't this whole Mac vs. PC thing getting old?" in situations such as this. The war is conducted by unprofessional IT managers all over the world, not by Mac users.

How professional are IT managers going against the use of Macs because of pretended network incompatibilities? or because of additional superior costs: ludicrous. Ever have read a Gartner report on the subject?

Fact is: there are mission critical systems out there, hospitals, airports, banks, you name it and IDIOTS out there are still using Windows OSes in such environments. Even more idiots when the they dismiss the issue of alternatives with "Apple are toys" or "They can't run this" or assuming Linux is a character from "Peanuts".

Let me tell you, one word: IDIOTS. So stop the war indeed and ditch those Windows machines.

Aug 13, 03 - 12:53 pm Comment from: Seahawk

Cheap sells and cheap stuff is what you get. When one day of inactivity costs you millions go tell me again the PC were cheap!

Aug 13, 03 - 12:57 pm Comment from: Seahawk

steve: sorry you work - your words - in a dumb company. And your CEO is an IDIOT.

Aug 13, 03 - 01:06 pm Comment from: Al

Don't we all feel safer now that the dept of Homeland Security will put all our personal information on secure Windows machines?

Aug 13, 03 - 01:08 pm Comment from: Al

I have seen posts and articles about how Apple users love the Macs.

The only positive thing I have seen about Wintel machines is how fast they are.

I have never seen anyone say they LOVE their Wintel boxes.

There are Mac Fanatics and sour grape windows users...

Aug 13, 03 - 01:10 pm Comment from: EH

Here is how you protect a Windows machine from viruses.

Step 1) Disconnect it from the internet.

Step 2) Turn it off.

Aug 13, 03 - 01:15 pm Comment from: R.V

"Cheap sells. And as long as a PC costs half of what a mac does, people will put up with anything... including virii that turn their harddrives to mush etc. etc."

The sad reality is...If these bozos would add in the cost of ownership of their so called CHEAPER PC, including downtime and lost productivity caused by things like virus infections, reinstalling the OS and this worm, they would perhaps realize that the whole notion is a LIE!

Apple computers cost less to own over 3 years. The difference in cost is less than 5% in most cases which is quickly erased in the first year of trouble free performance both in software and hardware reliability.

Must truly suck to be so fricking stupid!

Aug 13, 03 - 01:16 pm Comment from: Seahawk

To turn a Mac user into a fanatic there is one simple recipe: one stupid PC user comment a day.

Aug 13, 03 - 01:20 pm Comment from: Seahawk

At least the Navy won't be affected: they are now on Apple XServe running Linux.

Aug 13, 03 - 01:29 pm Comment from: Aryugaetu

It starts at an early age. My 15 yr old niece's b.f.d.j (boyfriend du jour) is a 16 yr old about to start college (very bright kid) and currently works with PCs and wants to be a programmer. As I drove him home last week, we chatted about Macs. He firmly believes that..

1. Macs will eventually use Intel chips because Steve jobs was seen talking to someone from Intel. (Of course I happen to mention the G5 being the fastest computer and the whole 16-to-32 bit code conversion problem with Intel, so going with Intel would be a huge step backwards).

2. Apple is slowly dying. (And I calmly countered with all of Apple's advancements, millions of Macs sold each year, and 25% of them are switchers.)

If a cult exists, it is with Microsoft and the flood of misinformation disseminated as fact. Yes, one day very soon, I'll invite the boyfriend over for "An Afternoon with a Mac". Not as an "I told you so", but more of a gentle introduction to alternatives outside the grasp of Microsoft control. Being a programmer, I think he'll appreciate the scripting differences:

Can someone tell me where I could get figures on how much money a company saves on average by using Windows vs Linux vs Mac? I am just curious what the best figures are on operating costs, etc. My company is soon going to be setting up servers and personal workstations soon and I need some info on what to recommend. Thanks! smile

Following Gartner report, from an independent analysis at the University of Liege, Belgium, they discovered that if they substitute WIntel platforms with Macs (currently 4000 Wintel and 1000 Macs) with the amount saved at the minimum calculation, one could buy 58 eMacs every year at the current education pricing. At the more realistic estimate, one could buy 128 eMacs each year.

If one considers moving away from all Microsoft systems and applications (approx. 200 euros/year), the study shows, the migration gives 800,000 euros to the University. In other words, one can save on software alone an equivalent of 551 eMacs per year.

The US Navy bought Apple's XServe with Linux installed: some of the reasons: they were way cheaper for same performance and presented little security flaws vs whatever Windows/Intel solution.

Our company computers (PC's) were "infected" by the msblaster worm on Tuesday (8/12). In order to get them "fixed" I was able to use my iMac (home machine) to download the patch for the systems and repair them.

Aug 13, 03 - 02:01 pm Comment from: Jack Russell

To Josh's question of how to get the company to look at Mac, sometimes it take the camels nose under the tent. I let our IT guy borrow my Power Book for two weeks and demonstrate that he could use it successfully on the company network.

He had already switched all of our servers from windooze to IBM's with Linux and now we've added two X serves. Still no universal migration but there are now two MDD's as well. Granted 2 out of 167 peecees is not much, but they have already proven themselves just on downtime and maintenance. The plus is that even the in house wintel geek likes the X serves.

Our company will never abandon windooze as many of the proprietary OEM porgrams we use only run under windooze, however, I know we will see a larger percentage of Apple's in the next few years. The productivity is winning the argument all by itself.

Aug 13, 03 - 02:10 pm Comment from: Tom

Steve . . . are you listening Steve? Put your ad agency to work immediately and put out an ad which documents what this virus did and how many computers were infected. Then the simple killer punch line - Not one of them was a Macintosh.

Aug 13, 03 - 02:19 pm Comment from: Less is More

Apples aren't totally immune, but a PC is just like a slut at a Mardi Gras parade - it attracts flies.

Aug 13, 03 - 02:24 pm Comment from: SMactech

Fire the bozos in that IT department for not having an adequate firewall rules and for not patching the systems. Reminds me, I had better go check today's CERT bulletins and the patch of the day from M$.

Aug 13, 03 - 02:38 pm Comment from: I.P.Freely

If the company IT staff had anyone with intellegence this would not have happened.
But also, if the IT staff had any brains, they would not fight tooth and nail to support multiple systems. Ignorance only perpetuate ignorance.

I have a staff that can handle Mac, PC, Linux and if we had to we get someone trained on a platform.

Unfortunate problem with most IT or MIS department is that they only hire inexperienced people as low level techs. And most of them were brought up on Windows. I have hired a Mac tech, but experienced ones are hard to find. So if you are a Mac Head, my suggestion to you is this: Learn Windows, you can make more changes from within rather than shouting at them from outside. If you can support both platform, you are already ahead of the game.

Its same as learning a new language, it never hurts only helps.

i swear, apple should make a commercial: [scene, neighborhood in chaos, people panicking in the street, lights failing].. switch to tv news on a television showing broadcaster announcing windows virus killing all computers, disasters".. tv shuts off, zoom out, happy guy puts down the remote control, puts on his iPod headphones and dances around room, roommate sits in front of his G5, surfing web and making videos. keep zooming out, apple spokesperson saying something like "Aren't you glad you're using a Mac?" Fade to black. apple logo, URL
