RUMOR: Apple’s video iPod or tablet Mac spotted?
Thursday, February 23, 2006 - 03:48 PM EST

"This image was just sent to us. It follows the description provided by several rumor sites and also appears to be from the same factory where the iPod pictures last November were taken," MacShrine reports. "Come on 28th!"

For what it's worth, Engadget has picked up the story and they did get the iPod 5G right before it was officially announced.

Full article here.

As for the unit shown in the bottom image, details from 163.com are somewhat scant and much is lost in translation. This much we could decipher: 260GB hard drive, 128MB Flash, 500MHz processor running "Mac OS X for Handhelds 7.1," with included software: Safari 1.1, Quicktime Player Handheld Editon 7.1, iTunes, Address Book, iPhoto for Handheld Edition, Salling Clicker, Apple Media Manager 2.1.

Full article here.

MacDailyNews Take: Images and rumored products are flying around faster than chairs in Ballmer's office lately. "The mill" seems intent on using Apple's Tuesday, February 28th event to make up for the lack of "leaked" images for Macworld Expo 2006.

Regardless of whether either image is correct, wouldn't having a portable version of Mac OS X on an iPod be the perfect way to evangelize the Mac OS? Think about that. Killer.

Looking at the real-er one closely, one can see that it is a fake. Most of the color bars are photoshopped.

Apple´s not the only one announcing:

Now these things on their own are hard enough to believe. Taken together, things get a little more squirrly — add the fact that, according to comments on the site, the product number on the device is that of OS X.2 server.

SOOOOOOO fake, it's amateurish!

I have an announcement to make.

I NEVER THREW A FUCKING CHAIR!!!

Oh, MDN with "takes" like that your sure to keep us in stitches.

BTW, nice to see the <i>'real',/i> MDN is back with the sarcasm, Mafiasoft deriding wit we've all come to know and love.

Dunno, who was trying to fill in with that bland, friendly humor while you were gone. But fire them!

LOL

Dear html police,

I'm sorry for screwing up the 'real' . I was lauging so damn hard. I promise to pay better attention next time.

"Uh, that would infer there was a 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, and 1 Mac OS X for Handhelds. What a load of crap."

Well, there was never a Mac OS X 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, or 1. The long name for the current generation of Mac OS X is "Mac OS X 10.4.5."

Feb 23, 06 - 09:13 pm Comment from: Macs King

It is truely extraordinary how many people have gone ga-ga over a freak'n screen with a color bar display. It that's the new iPod we're in deep doo doo, Gawd that's ugly.

Come on folks. The 28th will be here soon. Is this the best we have in news?

Feb 23, 06 - 09:21 pm Comment from: Cubert

Don't know if this has been posted yet (sorry if it has been but I didn't have time to read all of the posts above), but the bottom picture is definitely a fake. Aside from the wrong application versions, look how they are set up alphabetically. There is a scroll bar on the right-hand side. Safari is the last one seen on the screen. The size of the scroll bar indicates that there are probably another 6 apps on the screen that we can't see. Can anyone think of 6 apps that would appear after Safari alphabetically that Apple could include on this? I can't. The top photo may be real, though.

Feb. 28th can't get here quick enough for me!

Feb 23, 06 - 10:10 pm Comment from: LordRobin

A video iPod controlled by smearing your oily finger all over the screen would be a retarded idea. And in the unlikely event that Apple actually releases such a device, I will still consider it a retarded idea. Steve Jobs will need several 10kW RDF boosters blasting at full power to convince us that watching video through fingerprint smudges is a dandy experience.

Feb 23, 06 - 11:02 pm Comment from: lbuschjr

Guys, Safari is already at version 2.0.3. Why would Apple regress to version 1.1?

And why is the power cord covered with brown packing tape? Apple would not use such cheap-looking stuff.

Total fake.

Why the hell is there a start menu and taskbar on the bottom of an OS X display!

Feb 24, 06 - 12:01 am Comment from: trippah

..... not bad!

didn't nintendo beat crapple to portable touch screen devices?
didn't some other company first start GUI interfaces?
didn't sony come up with portable audio devices originally?
didn't some team outside apple develop the algorithm to mp3 standard?

so im still tryin to figure out why crapple has an image to the public eye as an innovative company! what have they done that is 'new' to society?

to me crapple has the image of a pop artist in the IT industry.

Well ya know, the "X" in OS X is the roman numeral for 10. This is just a guess now, but I would assume that after Mac OS 9… it became Mac OS 10, or, by using the roman numeral, Mac OS X.

The date on the Chinese article is wrong

Feb 24, 06 - 02:17 am Comment from: TheConfuzed1

I find it hard to believe that the software versions of the included apps would not be either 1.0, or consistent with current existing versions.

Mac OS X For Handhelds 7.1?
Safari 1.1?

WTF is that? Sorry, but I'm not convinced.

Feb 24, 06 - 02:20 am Comment from: TheConfuzed1

Trippah--

Innovation is not only creation, but also application. If it's been done before, but it's been done wrong every time, until you come along, you're an innovator. No one is saying that Apple invented MP3 players. They simply made one that works well, and is easy to use. That is innovation.

Feb 24, 06 - 05:59 am Comment from: Macman via iPodDailyNews

Seriously guys, does no one read what each other are saying? People are still harping on about the fact that the versions of the apps on the bottom photo are old. I don't know how many people have said this, the bottom picture is an old, artist's mock-up of what people would like to see!!!

Also on the chinese picture, the chinese on the dock connector says 'This Side Up'

Feb 24, 06 - 10:46 am Comment from: Chinese reader

In the 163.com article, between the picture and the specs is a line of text that translates to: "conceptual (or imaginary) rendering". The article is not saying this is what they expect Apple to release. They're just saying this would be nice to have. Notice the date of the article, 2004.

In the first article, totally fake. The white cord is clearly a power cord. No way Apple would clunker it up with an AV cable that looks so ugly and thick. And in both instances, no way Steve allows an Apple product out the door without at least a tiny Apple logo on the front.

Feb 24, 06 - 02:10 pm Comment from: Ron R

Chinese Reader: Although I have no clue whether the image is real or not, it seems to me the large cable could be something used for testing only.

And as far as an Apple logo on the front, the current iPods have the logo on the back.

I wonder whether people think the product in the image is the same size as a current 5G iPod? Assuming the connector on the side is the same size as a current iPod dock connector, it looks to me to be the same width and length as the 5G...

Ron

P.S. If you happen to read this, Happy Birthday Steve!

Feb 24, 06 - 05:12 pm Comment from: Steve

Haha, you guys know I always like to keep up on the rumours surrounding my little miracle I like to call the iPod. I'm going to keep mum on this one but I will say that I hope you are already for one more thing by Tuesday the 28th!

Thanks for the birthday wishes, but really 51 years old? I can't believe it, oh well the cycle goes on.

Happy blogging you guys!

Love Steve
