RUMOR: Apple’s video iPod or tablet Mac spotted?
Thursday, February 23, 2006 - 03:48 PM EDT

"This image was just sent to us. It follows the description provided by several rumor sites and also appears to be from the same factory where the iPod pictures last November were taken," MacShrine reports. "Come on 28th!"

For what it's worth, Engadget has picked up the story and they did get the iPod 5G right before it was officially announced.

Full article here.

As for the unit shown in the bottom image, details from 163.com are somewhat scant and much is lost in translation. This much we could decipher: 260GB hard drive, 128MB Flash, 500MHz processor running "Mac OS X for Handhelds 7.1," with included software: Safari 1.1, Quicktime Player Handheld Editon 7.1, iTunes, Address Book, iPhoto for Handheld Edition, Salling Clicker, Apple Media Manager 2.1.

Full article here.

MacDailyNews Take: Images and rumored products are flying around faster than chairs in Ballmer's office lately. "The mill" seems intent on using Apple's Tuesday, February 28th event to make up for the lack of "leaked" images for Macworld Expo 2006.

if it were true, i'd be pleased.

It is unknown if I am pleased.

It is therefore unknown if this is true.

Please let this be true! My 3G iPod was stolen a month ago along with my car. Got the car back two days later but the iPod is gone forever (despite being engraved with my name & website). I've been waiting to replace the iPod to see what the next great thing will be.

Feb 23, 06 - 05:21 pm Comment from: Geronimo

Cool, but the lack of games will hurt vs. Sony PSP

However, a 260 GB hard drive almost screams full-length movies...so selling those online may be in store.

Or maybet his is just a photoshop hoax.

Feb 23, 06 - 05:23 pm Comment from: John

Nice dream product......

Feb 23, 06 - 05:24 pm Comment from: Brandon

totally fake.

The quicktime logo isn't even up to date

Feb 23, 06 - 05:25 pm Comment from: malckwan

The site lists iTunes 5... Odd considering iTunes is at ver 6.

Feb 23, 06 - 05:25 pm Comment from: Dank

if it had a text writing/editing/viewing app (new newton) i'd pay mucho money for it.

mw: money. weird.

Feb 23, 06 - 05:26 pm Comment from: Mark

Hmmm, on second inspection, I don't see how the drop down menu would be activated without a mouse. Seems suspicious now.

Feb 23, 06 - 05:29 pm Comment from: Jonathan

Umm and Apple would NEVER put the menu at the bottom.. that's just wrong...

Feb 23, 06 - 05:29 pm Comment from: macintosh16tx

not sure if i would rather have a Phone made by Apple or this PDA type device?.....

Feb 23, 06 - 05:29 pm Comment from: tHE dUDE

What quicktime logo? Do you people even take a second to examine anything before you post? The QT logo in the image below the photo is for a reference to an earlier rumor.

You guys are so eager for someone to listen to your meaningless opinion...

"Cool, but the lack of games will hurt vs. Sony PSP"

How do you figure?

Feb 23, 06 - 05:32 pm Comment from: tHE dUDE

GAWD some of you are irritating, will you follow the links to the original article instead of posting opinions based only on the MDN page!

The image below the actual picture is an artist's rendering of an earlier rumor.

"The next ipod will be BIG, an 8 pounder with a 10" screen".

- Steve Jobs, as himself, in the Podcast "Super Secret Apple Rumours", recorded live at Macworld 2006.

8 pounds = 8lbs! That sounds a bit heavy. 10" looks right if it is true...

That's the funniest thing I've heard all day!

LOL

When you blow this pic up, it shows on the screen "Bluetooth" icon. If this is the next advanced product then why do the earbud headphones have wire on them. They should be Bluetooth.

Feb 23, 06 - 05:47 pm Comment from: G-ZUS

The bottom one is totally fake, it has rounded edges like a 4G iPod. I'm sure it would look more like a 5G iPod if it were real.

My Chinese is not very good, but better than Googles. I am not quite shure the site is even claiming this is a "real" ipod. I beleive it is saying more along the line of this is what a lifestyle ipod could be. But again, my chinese is not very good.

Feb 23, 06 - 06:04 pm Comment from: pino

dudes, dudes, dudes. Top photos real, bottoms a fake. different rumors, different sites. look into what you comment on.

And when you shake it your sketchpad clears. And left and right knobs for drawing and navigation.

Feb 23, 06 - 06:08 pm Comment from: macdude

The bottom pic looks like a mock up of what was a rumored speculated iPod that was posted on-line just before the Mac World in SF.

Can't 'member where I saw it though. It does look familiar.

Anyone else agree?

Feb 23, 06 - 06:10 pm Comment from: binder520

What does those two chinese characters on the top photo say?

Feb 23, 06 - 06:12 pm Comment from: Macaday

The second article is from October 2004.

Common guys...

Feb 23, 06 - 06:19 pm Comment from: Anim8r

OK people...

Follow the LINK!

The top image is the supposed device. The bottom image is from an earlier rumor and is just a mock-up of what the people would like to see.

JEEZ!

Here is why I think this is real.
The sticker has a part number starting with M8. Most newer apple parts are labeled with numbers starting M8.
The chinese character is the same in this image and in the earlier 5G iPod image that was leaked.

The only thing I don't know is what that big-ass cable on the right hand side is. If someone can read Mandarin please let us know what the carboard over the plug says.

MDN Magic Word: hotel

Feb 23, 06 - 06:22 pm Comment from: Dave H

That picture is so faked. Behind all that white cloth is the rest of the iMac G4.

I give this 1/10 and that's only for effort.

Feb 23, 06 - 06:22 pm Comment from: Anim8r

Sorry, I meant MB in that post.

DOH!

That Japanese site.. what does it say.

cut and paste it in the Translator widget, and this is what you get.

Feb 23, 06 - 06:26 pm Comment from: Freeze

Oh God, I hope not. That iPod on top is butt ugly.

MDN word = ahead, meaning that way of these pictures are way ahead of reality.

Feb 23, 06 - 06:28 pm Comment from: Freeze

Oops, the last sentence was supposed to be "all of these pictures are way ahead of reality". I said way before I was supposed to..

Of course the one on the bottom is a rendering. It must be a mockup from 3G-4G times.

Feb 23, 06 - 06:32 pm Comment from: Evil Monkey

Pion I am reading the posts and making a remark on the second one. Also, I am hiding in your closet. cool grin

Feb 23, 06 - 06:33 pm Comment from: Luke

The Chinese on the cable translates to "This Side Up"

I read that in the MacShrine comments.

Feb 23, 06 - 06:34 pm Comment from: Evil Monkey

IT Guy its Chineese try that in your translator.

"Mac OS X for Handhelds 7.1,"??

Uh, that would infer there was a 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, and 1 Mac OS X for Handhelds. What a load of crap.

Feb 23, 06 - 06:38 pm Comment from: Luke

This iPod is the same size as current 5Gs. Check out the sticker size in a leaked 5G production sample here http://flickr.com/photos/pedromoreno/sets/1125837/

The stickers are the same size.

Translation from the site, compliments of Google's Chinese-to-English BETA...

Humanity's imagination is infinite, this estimate nobody can suspect. Along with the entertainment product, originally should belong the non- daily necessity, but who doesn't want to let oneself the mood as necessary all maintain a happier condition. The music certainly is one important whiles away the time the factor, therefore the magnetic tape along with listens, CD along with listens, to now MP3 and may look the movie MP4 all arises at the historic moment.

All are do not count the cost regarding the iPod deep love very many people, this will cause us to continue the product to iPod later fills the anticipation. But ever appeared each kind of design final goal all was lets us live is more comfortable.

MW:medical, as in... Do you have a legitimate medical excuse?"

Feb 23, 06 - 06:45 pm Comment from: wannabe

For those complaining that the cord has two parts, to me it looks very similar to the old USB+Firewire cords. I have one of these somewhere and it has two separate white cords coming out of the connector. In this photo it appears that the two cords are connected to each other (like a lamp cord) but you can only really see a tiny portion of the cord.

This doesn't prove much about the product being real or fake, but at least the cord may be legit.

Feb 23, 06 - 06:56 pm Comment from: MacDaddy

Feb 23, 06 - 07:02 pm Comment from: Luke

Bet it doesn't support Firewire. downer

Feb 23, 06 - 07:12 pm Comment from: ms988

Regardless of whether either image is correct, wouldn't having a portable version of Mac OS X on an iPod be the perfect way to evangelize the Mac OS? Think about that. Killer.
