RUMOR: Apple to introduce 5GB ‘iPod mini’ and under-$200 flash-based iPod in early 2005
Friday, December 03, 2004 - 10:15 PM EST

"According to reliable sources, the iPod mini will see an approximate 25% storage increase that will allow it to carry 1250 songs, up from the player's current maximum capacity of 1000 songs," Kasper Jade reports for AppleInsider. "Sources say the new Apple player will be based around a 5GB hard drive. Hitachi, which supplies Apple with drives for the current line of iPod minis, has yet to officially introduce a 5GB version of its microdrive, though similar offerings are reportedly available from both Seagate and Toshiba. Capacity figures aside, not much more is known about the revised mini. Rumors of potential color alterations and more 'metallic' finishes are abound, but remain unconfirmed at this time... Also in early 2005, Apple is expected to launch a flash-based iPod that will sell for below (US)$200."

How about an iPod photo mini????? Or how about just, screw the scroll wheel, make a touch screen and make the iPod have a screen that covers the whole area (PowerPod anyone??). That would be a good idea. And drop the price by about $50 for every model.

Man...I hope so. I would really like an under $200 iPod to workout with.

Below $200 means $199.

Dec 04, 04 - 03:52 am Comment from: Benn

No, for Apple below $200 means $249 ...

Dec 04, 04 - 04:14 am Comment from: T

No, no, Benn, it's $249 and you get a coupon for $50 off the price of Apple products you buy at the Apple Store from $1000 and up. How's that?

Dec 04, 04 - 04:23 am Comment from: T

No, make that you get $50 off the price of iTunes music purchases when you spend at least $500 on songs in one purchase. That's even better.

Apple really must be on the crest of a wave with the iPod. Prices are still uncompromised, yet imagine what the volumes have done to component prices? Margins must be the best they've ever been...

Jan 05 results will be eyepopping. Bravissimo Apple!

Perhaps there won't be a flash player at all? Prices for a 1 GB flash player would make it very expensive. the same as the current 4GB hard drive mini I believe. I think there will be a surprise. The current 4 GB mini at $149 and the new 6GB (not 5) at $249. But we really don't know and I'm sure Apple has a surprise up their sleeve. I don't think there will be a color screen mini, but all the regular iPods could have color screens in the next go around. All guesses of course.

Appleinsider.com has an almost perfect track record for very accurate rumors. The stuff they write about almost always turn out to be true.

AI sometimes does get general info right but not always the exact details. They do not have a "almost perfect" record. Much of what they publish in this regards appears elsewhere, sometimes days or weeks before. They are a RUMOR site and have no information directly from Apple. Everything should be taken with a grain of salt. This most recent information has been published plenty of times before, nothing new here.

Can you imagine PC users saying, "Yeah! Micros**t is charging an uncompromised premium for their latest product, so they must be really raking in the profits! That's great news!"
THAT is the PC/Mac difference right there.

Below $200 means $199.99 minus tax...
