RUMOR: Apple preps analog to FireWire audio device for GarageBand users
Tuesday, November 23, 2004 - 10:18 AM EDT

"Apple Computer is expected to introduce a new audio interface for GarageBand users in the coming months. The analog [to] FireWire audio device, the first product of its recently created iPod division, will allow users to directly record audio using any Mac and Apple’s GarageBand music studio application. According to reputable sources, the company is on track to begin manufacturing the device overseas next month," Kasper Jade reports for AppleInsider.

"The device, code-named 'Q97' or 'Asteroid,' has been under development at the company for the better part of the year. Typically referred to as a 'breakout box' in the music recording industry, the external audio device attaches to a computer and offers audio inputs and outputs for attaching instruments or other audio sources. Apple is reportedly building the device around GarageBand, its popular application for aspiring musicians," Jade reports.

"According to sources, Asteroid will include two XLR/ TRS audio input connectors, two RCA analog output jacks, and a standard headphone jack. The device will draw power through a single FireWire 400 port and include a phantom on/off power switch," Jade reports. "In addition to the aforementioned specs, a more advanced version of the Asteroid device - recently seen floating around the Apple's Cupertino campus - sports an additional S/PDIF optical output port; however, it is unclear which version the company will ultimately send to manufacturing... [The device is] expected to debut in January, alongside a revised version of Apple's iLife digital lifestyle software suite."

More info and an artist's rendering of the rumored device is at AppleInsider here.

Breakout box?

"Asteroid"?

you sure this isn't an apple portable game system?

the point being that this is Apple's model..

give away a sweet app that handles your digital media and sell the optional accessory (iSight, iPod) that is beautifully integrated with it..

The optional accessory is usually compatible with Windows, so as to spur Apple Awakening (or Apple Enlightenment)

Okay, so that last part sounds arrogant..

Have to disagree though that this will work "with any Mac". Model would have to have Firewire and be able to run GB.

oh yeah.. they've changed iTMS again.. the intro screen has changed so that it prompts you to select your country since the Canadian one isn't up yet..

Oh... I just love the "bi-annual" Apple rumor season..but, if this one proves true, it would be a kick-ass accessory !!

But, to grow a market, one usually must create a desire for the product...

Just think of the desire Apple would create for this little ditty... not to mention the "halo-effect" it would have.... if only His Steveness would advertise it !!

Nov 23, 04 - 12:07 pm Comment from: mike

eh.. I can't get into the iTMS now.. hrrrrm.. something's cookin'..

Nov 23, 04 - 12:16 pm Comment from: synthmeister

I think it's great there is finally a relatively "cheap" firewire alternative to the myriad USB audio interfaces out there but if the specs are true, I don't see how this interface stands out from the USB interfaces. As long as you are only recording a stereo input with a "consumer" quality hardware, firewire doesn't really have a big advantage over USB.

If this is true I may even be tempted to give up my trusty Mackie 1202 but it'd have to be really good for that. Firewire would be interesting though.

Nov 23, 04 - 01:22 pm Comment from: pkradd

Umm. Nothing indicates Canada and Ireland have been added based on current iTMS list of countries at bottom of page.... Anyay, what does this have to do with the topic at hand?

Nov 23, 04 - 01:24 pm Comment from: Twenty Benson

Maybe this baby will be sold as aSteroid ?

Nov 23, 04 - 01:25 pm Comment from: pkradd

Mike,

Before posting why didn't you check... too lazy? I suspect the store(s) are coming by the end of the week. They are not listed as of yet as I said above.

Nov 23, 04 - 01:37 pm Comment from: mac user 47

The cockroach advertisement on the home page is a new low....

Nov 23, 04 - 01:39 pm Comment from: mike

ah.. what this has to do with the topic? well.. gee.. iTunes kinda pushes iPod sales... much like Garageband.. etc etc..

futhermore.. the actual site is blank because.. DUH.. it was pulled by Apple.. i said that..

checking the itms would be an obvious place to confirm this.. the canadian store isn't up yet, a glitch was obviously caught and a picture was taken..

the ipod u2 would be a real rip-off if sb bought it in Canada and couldn't use the iTMS to redeem their DBS..Canadian store should be live TODAY..

Nov 23, 04 - 01:47 pm Comment from: mac dood

another scoop !!

How about over 1 TB of storage ???

'Enlightenment' is the right term. "The Enlightenment: the period in the 18th century in Europe, when many people began to emphasize the importance of science and reason, rather than religion and tradition"

That is to say, although there appear to be similarities with faith in the cult of mac, that faith is evidence based. We have experience of it being better and just working. Microsoft are more like a religion than Apple - being blindly followed by millions even when much of it is complete nonsense.

Nov 23, 04 - 02:41 pm Comment from: Al

Mike,

iTMS was behaving the same way last Sunday AM in Canada. If you go to preferences and show links to music store you can still get there through them.

I like that quote! Thanks :D

Nov 23, 04 - 10:36 pm Comment from: mike

Hywel's quote..

no one who uses MS's products really cares about the company.. which is why they are not 'religious'.. there's nothing particularily great about the OS except for it's developer support...

on the other hand, mac users are rabid promoters of the brand.. as in.. evangelical..

get it?
